Logos were everywhere in the Blue Zone, hinting at what’s happening behind the scenes: corporations have far too much influence in climate negotiations. But, we can’t let them co-opt the movement. Caption : 🔥🛢️ The young plaintiffs filing a lawsuit in the #MecherosCase publicly challenge the Ecuadorian Minister of Energy and Mines! 🌍🌿 🌍🌳 In 2021, after years of struggle, nine girls won a historic ruling ordering the phasing out of all oil industry gas flares in Ecuador. However, just one year away from the final compliance deadline, NOTHING HAS BEEN IMPLEMENTED! The organization representing those affected, @udapt_oficial, as well as the plaintiffs and their communities, are denouncing the serious impacts on human health and biodiversity, with several of the plaintiffs’ family members suffering from cancer. In provinces such as #Orellana and #Sucumbíos, the incidence of this disease far exceeds the national average and largely affects women. In addition, gas flares are responsible for economic losses of up to $500 million per year in the country. ✊🏾🪧 On Wednesday #February21, four of the plaintiffs confronted the 🇪🇨 Minister of Energy and Mines, @andreaarrobopena, during the Biodiversity Commission’s second session in Ecuador’s Congress. Despite the Minister’s claims of having extinguished two flares, @udapt_oficial and the “Eliminate the Flares” Collective report that, not only has the sentence NOT been complied with, but that the number of gas flares actually increased between 2022 and 2024 from 447 to 486. 🔍 What happened to #EnvironmentalJustice? Oftentimes these brands are innovating new technologies in sustainable fibers, or employing artisans and rescuing culturally important traditions. Caption : Over 70% of Nestlé’s emissions come from agricultural activities and their climate plan is filled with empty promises: 🚩 Instead of aiming to reduce production of foods based on dairy, meat and other highly-emitting agricultural commodities, Nestlé plans to increase sales by two-thirds between 2020 and 2030. 🚩 Planting trees seems to be Nestlés main tactic to offset emissions, but to achieve its target of net-zero by 2050 they would have to plant trees in at least 4.4 million hectares of land yearly — that’s more than the size of their home-country, Switzerland. 🚩 Nestlé has committed  $1.2 billion dollars to promote “regenerative agriculture practices” — but that’s a meagre 1.5% of what it pays its shareholders in dividends. 🚩 There is no clear outline on how suppliers will transition to regenerative practices or who will pay for that to happen. Many organisations profiting off extractive and exploitative practices are appropriating Indigenous knowledge to greewash their brand image. Their sole intention is to capitalise on the crisis. Caption : Earlier this year we made a film with the indigenous Brazilian environmental activist @txaisurui and the street artivist @mundano_sp where we put a 150 metre artwork of the @tescofood logo into a deforested area of the Amazon. We wanted highlight the relationship between Tesco and the multi-billion dollar meat company #JBS that has been linked to human rights abuses and an estimated 1.5 million hectares of deforestation. Tesco has pledged to be deforestation-free but while we were out there we saw firsthand how supposedly protected indigenous territory in the forest is being destroyed for for meat production linked to JBS. Defending indigenous territory is one of the most effective ways to protect the Amazon for our futures and the futures of our children. These forests are home to one in ten species on Earth. Medicines for Parkinson’s and leukaemia come from these forests. The trees here hold up to 140 billion tons of carbon, which helps keeps the planet cool. And yet scientists have warned that the Amazon may be on the brink of collapse. To highlight the complicity of companies like Tesco in this destruction Mundano turned from street artist to forest artist – designing a huge piece of artwork of the Tesco and JBS logos. Installing it on the ground was incredibly difficult. The indigenous community who helped us on the ground with the installation face regular attacks and incursions into their forest by farmers who burn the trees to turn into arable land. We tried to install the artwork on a number of occasions within Txai’s territory, but Txai and her community were chased off their own land by ranchers. Txai and her mother @neidinha_defensora_da_floresta and their organisation @kanindebrazil are fighting every day to protect these forests for all of us. Caption : [This video is an extract from the documentary “Apaguen los Mecheros, Enciendan la Vida”, made by @_angel_hernandezzz_ and available online at www.odinedoc.com] 🇪🇨 In the Ecuadorian Amazon there are 447 gas flares burning day and night in territories inhabited by indigenous and peasant communities, irremediably contaminating the environment and putting the health of thousands of people at serious risk. 🔥 Gas flares are devices used by oil companies to burn gasses derived from oil exploitation, such as carbon monoxide, which causes heart damage, carbon dioxide, which contributes to the greenhouse effect, butane, which is potentially lethal for children, and methane, which causes skin cancer. ☢️ In addition, gas flares cause acid rain, which translates into contamination of rivers, soil impoverishment, death of insects and microorganisms, diseases of plants and large vertebrates, and other imbalances in the ecosystem. ✊ In 2021, 9 girls won a ruling against the Ecuadorian state to extinguish all lighters near population centers. However, to this day the Ecuadorian state has not complied with the sentence, continuing to be complicit in this violation of human rights and the rights of nature and putting the interests of big business before the health of citizens. ⚡️ For the state to allow gas flaring is even more outrageous now, considering that the country is forced to impose planned blackouts in its major cities to face an energetic crisis while the same gas companies burn could be used as a source of energy. 🌎 The fight against lighters is not only a struggle of the Amazonian peoples, but of all of us, as they contribute substantially to global warming, and therefore to climate change. Caption : After a long hiatus Compost Queen is back! I wrote and made this one a while back with @iamanasalles and @joshwhiton the founder of @makesoil – but when I met the wonderful humans behind @goodancestorco I knew that I wanted to include their beautiful handmade ceramic compost bin in the story. Giving our food back to the Earth is such a sacred act, but doing so in a plastic container was not feeling very sacred or aligned. So when I learned about these sacred vessels that look so beautiful on our countertops – I knew I wanted to support their work. Now taking my “organic matter” to the compost bin outside every other day feels like a sacred ritual, an act of reverence and reciprocity with the Earth. And remember to look up @makesoil if you can’t compost at home, or consider becoming a Soil Site yourself. It’s the one thing we can start doing today! All the love, from Compost Queen 💌 🥕🥦🌽🍇🍍

Caption : Não há razão lógica ou moral para que o Supremo Tribunal Federal Brasileiro seja autorizado a aprovar uma lei que declare que os povos indígenas não têm direito a qualquer terra que não estivessem ocupando fisicamente em 1988 – a história indígena dessas tierras remonta a mais de 10.000 anos! Claramente, essa lei foi projetada para que interesses de grandes empresas possam tomar posse dessas terras e continuar seu plano de destruição em busca do lucro. Desde a chegada dos Europeos a essas terras há 500 anos, houve morte, doença, destruição e má administração da água e das terras, causando catástrofes ecológicas com implicações planetárias. Se você ou seus antepassados já beberam água limpa dos nossos aquíferos, desfrutaram da abundância de nossa biodiversidade, encontraram cura em nossas medicinas sagradas – todos esses são presentes que os povos indígenas têm cuidado há milhares de anos. Onde está o seu apoio político aos povos originários desta terra? 🔹vía @tukuma_pataxo & @petitabel 🔹 “E se o Marco Temporal fosse ao contrário?” Depois de muito tempo, o Marco Temporal voltou à pauta política para ameaçar os direitos indígenas. Essa tese afirma que a demarcação das terras dos povos originários só poderá ser feita uma vez que a ocupação desses territórios fosse estabelecida até 1988 (data da Constituição). Isso ignora qualquer tipo de deslocamento forçado que tenham sofrido, principalmente durante a ditadura militar, quando milhares de indígenas foram expulsos de seus locais e não conseguiram retornar. Em que isso nos afeta? Quando se tiram direitos de uma minoria, todas as outras estão ameaçadas. Sem falar nos conflitos além de maiores perdas em preservação ambiental e cultural. Além do Marco Temporal, esse projeto facilita obras de grande porte sem consulta popular em terras indígenas, autoriza o questionamento sobre demarcações já feitas, ameaça povos isolados e ainda muda conceitos para diminuir os direitos originários. No entanto, já existe uma mobilização popular para que a pauta seja revista pelo STF como inconstitucional, já que os direitos indígenas, assim como quaisquer outros adquiridos, não podem ser anulados!

I don’t play any instruments but this one came so naturally to me.. I can only imagine that the soundscapes created by my ancestors were just as beautiful as the landscapes they left behind. As Indigenous rights are being eroded all over South America, may these beautiful sounds bring back the memories of all we have lost… our sacred connection to plants, animals, fungi, mountains, rivers, ocean – our birthright to be co-creators in beauty and biodiversity. By enslaving ourselves to capitalism and as a result of our arrogance and short-sightedness we are losing the cultural and biodiversity that makes our existence on this planet so special. This time in human history has been entrusted to us and the decisions we make will effect future generations. What will we choose? Biodiversity or profit? Shares in invisible wealth or true prosperity of clean air, water and soil? Tolerance and loving kindness or shame and hatred? What world will we create ? 🌿 🌍

Caption : May my aunties Eugenia and Esther rest in peace. Both died of cancer when I was young. Both were unknowingly exposed to DDT at a young age. Thankfully the chemical DDT was banned after the Bald Eagle was listed under the Endangered Species Act. But how many more of our loved ones have to die of mysterious cancers and other chronic illnesses due to the toxic chemicals that industrial agriculture is spraying on our food and leaching into our waters? Please join @centerforfoodsafety in their fight to list the Iowa Skipper as an Endangered Species, paving the way for the most toxic of these chemicals to be banned. Indigenous people are our first line of defense against the extractive industries that are destroying biodiversity in Brazil and other parts of the Amazon. They are also the co-creators of biodiversity on this continent, as a result of their thousands of years of careful land management. The fight for Demarçao is crucial to ensure these communities can continue to do their extremely vital work. With species loss between 1000-10000 times higher than thee natural rate, protecting our forests, rivers, animals, trees and fungi – is indeed the most important job in the world. Caption : I’m in Brasilia at the 19th annual Acampamento Terra Livre, the largest Indigenous gathering in Brazil. The main demand is “Demarcação” or Land Back! Aside from their legitimate claim to their territories as The Original Peoples of this country, there is a strong ecological argument for their land rights too. Everywhere that Indigenous people have had their territories formally recognized – there is higher biodiversity and higher rates of reforestation. Sadly their very existence and ways of life are being threatened by extractive industries like mining, agro-business which both cause deforestation and contamination of their rivers. @midiaindigenaoficial are the first Indigenous led media collective in the country, and are covering this event on the ground. Caption : In case you were wondering about my Origin Story: I was raised in Australia by Trevor Kelley, a brilliant mathematician – slightly on the spectrum – climate change denying atheist. And I couldn’t be more grateful that he taught me to memorize quadratic equations while in kindergarten and put Romeo and Juliet A Brave New World on my reading list before I reached highschool. His newly diagnosed autism now explains for his embarrassing poltical incorrectness my whole childhood and is probably the reason why I grew up to be such a good little “Woke Liberal.” Which I know is his way of saying he loves me. ❤️Thanks for being such a good sport Dad, and allowing me to write and film this script based on our real life conversations / arguments. We all have a Climate Change Skeptic in our lives and at times feel frustrated or confused about the best way to deal with them. This video is for you!

Thank you to @heydonprowse who wrote this scene – inspired by all the fossil fuel lobbyists at COP clinking champagne in their designer clothes while our world burns… it was a true study in the mindset of those who work for the fossil fuel industry. Caption : My forever muse 🌹 As the youngest daughter of 9 children my mother learned to sew from her older sisters who didn’t let the lack of money stop them from taking immense pride in their clothes and appearance. They used to buy fabrics (dead stock) at the market in Lima, Peru and make their clothes using patterns from European magazines. It was my mother who taught me to always look for natural fibers and warned me against synthetics. She would make entire outfits for me when I was younger and even now as an adult I marvel at the level of care and attention she puts into mending the clothes I bring home once a year – a sign of the enormous respect she has for each garment, and the resources used to make them. Even my little artisan woven pouches (my addiction) that have fallen apart have their lives extended by her skillful touch and creativity. As I finish up an advance copy of @mrspress’s fantastic new book “Wear Next” – I am moved to tears by the chapter on Repairing… I feel hopeful that the future of fashion could be a world in which women like my mother are celebrated as the true heroes of “fashion.” Resourceful, clever, skilled, admirers and preservers of beauty. Thank you Rosita for all you have taught me (and all the clothes you have saved from the donation bin) te quiero 💕 also how cute is my little brother in this photo.. my mother would make his little shirts and pajamas too!

Caption : If I was going to NYFW to ask the question “Who made your clothes?” Then I had to make sure that I was going to be able to answer that question myself! I chose to wear these beautiful garments to highlight the beauty and skill involved in the production of artisan made clothing. Artisans are the true superstars of the fashion world, and the brands that I am wearing in this video work directly with them – in doing so these traditions are being kept alive. Some of these artisan communities are able to continue to practice their ancestral farming methods because they are supported by such work. My dream is for all of our new clothing needs to be met via these ethical, simplified supply chains. Congrats to these wonderful brands for leading the way. @zazi.vintage @zoubida.official @casa.nushki @kullvi_whims @stivalinewyork @valdesmonts_ @milena_silvano – They each have fascinating stories that I look forward to telling. As my friend @jeannedekroon says, it’s time to shift our gaze away from the model and onto the MAKERS of our clothes . And we must come back into reverence for and balance with the animals who nourish and clothe us and who can be such an important part of the movement to heal our soil. The topic of animal fibers (wool and leather specifically) is one that needs a more nuanced discussion . I want to dedicate a whole post to this but in the meantime I will say: I have the utmost respect for those who practice Ahimsa (Non-Violence) towards animals. I myself am *mostly* vegetarian. But, after careful consideration I cannot endorse plastic fibers as an alternative because these fibers are sourced from fossil fuels – the extraction of which is causing even more harm to animals and ecosystems. More to come on this later, but after studying the benefits of regenerative agriculture I have come to the conclusion that there can be a way of sourcing these fibers in a way that helps, not harms the earth – with maximum respect for the quality of life of the animal and minimal suffering. So vegans, keep please the comment section respectful. I am not your enemy! Also shout out to @poshmark where I sourced everything else!
