Nazanin Boniadi Instagram - After sharing a candid video online in which he talked about the torture and broken bones he endured at the hands of the Islamic Republic, dissident rap artist #ToomajSalehi has been beaten and abducted by plainclothes regime militia in Iran, less than 2 weeks after being released on bail from more than a year in prison. He is one of the bravest voices in Iran. He belongs on stage, not in prison. He deserves accolades, not punishment.

Nazanin Boniadi Instagram - The time has come to declare gender apartheid a crime.

For decades, Iranian women have faced various forms of gender-based discrimination at the hands of the Islamic Republic. Systematically and purposefully, Iranian officials have advanced the subjugation of women, girls, and others through the use of all instruments and powers of the state.

They have instituted a complex web of discriminatory, degrading, and dehumanizing laws, policies, and practices in stark contravention of international law – with women and girls facing limits and restrictions in all aspects of our lives, from our education and employment to our dress and bodily autonomy.

The suffering of Iranian women and society as a whole must not go unnoticed, and concerted efforts are required to ensure that justice and equality prevail. That is why I have written a letter to UN Secretary-General António Guterres, urging him to declare gender apartheid a crime against humanity.”

Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi has written a letter from behind bars in Evin prison, where she is serving a 12-year sentence for “propaganda against the state,” among other things. Narges Mohammadi was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize 2023 for her fight against the oppression of women in Iran and her struggle to promote human rights and freedom for all.

Nazanin Boniadi Instagram - My rebuttal to Ebrahim Raisi’s remarks at the @unitednations General Assembly yesterday. I prepared this to deliver at the @womanlifefreedomnyc and @nsgiran rally outside UNGA but covid prevented me from attending. Nazanin Boniadi Instagram - I’m horrified to learn that my good friend and prominent Iranian journalist @pouriazeraati was stabbed multiple times outside his London home. While the @metpolice_uk is investigating, I hope they take the credible threats made by the Islamic Republic against current and former @iranintltv journalists (including @fardadfarahzad, @niushasaremi, @shelerhaghanifar and @simaa_sabet) seriously, especially given the regime’s decades-long history of targeted extraterritorial killings.
UK and European lawmakers often ask how they can best help the people of Iran realize their democratic aspirations — which would also result in regional and global peace and stability. How about by ensuring that dissidents are protected and regime cronies don’t get to live freely in our democracies while they terrorize people at home and abroad? How about we stop appeasing and platforming the Islamic Republic authorities and start providing a safe haven to those who risk everything for freedom?
If this was meant to cower dissidents into silence I can assure you it has only stiffened our collective resolve to stand united against a bloodthirsty regime that uses both domestic and transnational repression to maintain power.
Get well soon, Pouria. More power to you and all journalists and activists who expose the crimes of the IR.

Nazanin Boniadi Instagram - ‼️ Trigger warning. The Islamic Republic has claimed yet another innocent life. Renowned journalist and activist Kianoosh Sanjari, 42, had resisted the regime since he was a young student. He had been imprisoned, held in solitary confinement, tortured, and continued to be surveilled and persecuted. Yesterday he took to X to warn that he would take his own life if 4 political prisoners were not freed by dawn. They, of course, were not. And our pleas to Kianoosh failed. This is a devastating loss for Iran and the human rights community. As suicide rates continue to surge in Iran, this is a reminder that much needs to be done to support those in need and that we must stand united to prevent the loss of innocent lives, because the regime wants nothing more than the death and destruction of brave souls like Kianoosh.

کیانوش عزیز، چرا رفتی؟ 💔
‏لعنت بر این رژیم.
Nazanin Boniadi Instagram - 🤍 Friends since 2002, when I was a pre-med student. A lot has happened since then. Today we both stand against totalitarianism; against indoctrination, censorship and coercion; against surveillance, harassment, intimidation and punishment of dissidents and dissenters; against forced confessions; against false imprisonment; against tearing up families and interfering in private lives; and against a culture of impunity. May justice prevail everywhere.
Nazanin Boniadi Instagram - Update: the Islamic Republic has killed yet another innocent Iranian. Protester Mohammad Ghobadloo was executed in the morning of Tuesday January 23, 2024, local time in Karaj, Iran. No fair trial, no due process, and a torture tainted “confession.” Anyone shaking the hands of the Islamic Republic Foreign Minister as he visits New York today is complicit in enabling this tyrannical regime. For shame. 💔

لعنت بر جمهوری اسلامی و حامیانش

🚨 23-year-old #MohammadGhobadloo is at imminent risk of execution for protesting #MahsaAmini’s killing in 2022. He has been charged with “corruption on earth” in a sham trial by the Islamic Republic authorities.
According to Mohammad’s lawyer Amir Raisian, his execution is scheduled for tomorrow morning.
Please spread widely and call on all human rights activists, organizations and multinational institutions to intervene to save him and all other innocents at risk of execution by this totalitarian regime.

Nazanin Boniadi Instagram - Harvard professor @arthurcbrooks reminds us that true happiness isn’t about wealth, power, or fame, but about the depth of our relationships, meaningful work, and living with purpose. Organizational psychologist @adamgrant adds that happiness isn’t just about reaching goals—it’s about aligning those goals with our values. And that “achievement without impact is fleeting.” I couldn’t agree more. For me, authenticity and personal integrity are non-negotiable. After traveling across 6 continents, I’ve learned that happiness is as diverse as the cultures we experience. What does #happiness mean to you?”
Nazanin Boniadi Instagram - Islamic Republic state media has announced that 16-year-old #ArmitaGeravand is brain dead. This devastating confirmation of what many had suspected soon after she was hospitalized in a military hospital, comes 22 days after reports of her being attacked by morality police on the metro for not wearing the mandatory veil. As long as we don’t hold this regime to account, history will continue repeating itself and the regime will continue brutalizing Iranians and wreaking havoc in the Middle East. My deepest condolences to her family, and to the Iranian people for yet another tragic loss. #WomanLifeFreedom

Update: Oct 27, 2023 — Islamic Republic state media has reported that after 28 days in a coma in hospital, Armita has died. When a culture of impunity reigns supreme, history repeats itself. Utterly devastating.
Nazanin Boniadi Instagram - Art is a crime in the Islamic Republic. And the regime clearly fears artists.

Iranian singer #ShervinHajipour has been sentenced to three years in prison for “inciting people to cause unrest against national security,” and an additional eight months for “spreading propaganda against the regime” because of his protest anthem ‘Baraye,’ which won the inaugural Song for Social Change Grammy.

As additional penalties: he is banned from leaving the country for two years. He is being forced to compile and share the “achievements” of the Islamic Revolution in culture, science, and art on his internet platform. And he is required to prepare 30-page handwritten summaries for each of two books regarding women’s status in Islam, produce a song about “the atrocities of the U.S. against humanity,” collect cases of human rights violations by the U.S. over the past century, and participate in behavioral training courses in the field of art.

Nazanin Boniadi Instagram - #WomanLifeFreedom lives on. If democracy ever prevails in Iran it will be because of Iranian heroes like #RoyaHeshmati and #ZeynabKhonyabpour who refuse to bow to the Islamic Republic’s tyrannical rule.

Roya Heshmati (slide 1) received 74 lashes after being convicted for refusing to abide by the Islamic Republic’s draconian hijab law. “I won’t cover up” she pronounced even as they executed her barbaric punishment in what she described as “a medieval torture chamber.”

Zeynab (Bahar) Khonyabpour (slide 2) has received a two year prison sentence for sharing photos without hijab on social media.

They risk everything for freedom even as the world has moved on.

Nazanin Boniadi Instagram - Courage is the refusal to submit to oppression. This brave Iranian women, a student at Iran’s Islamic Azad University, took her clothes off in protest after a regime agent tore her clothes for “inappropriate hijab.” She was later thrown into an unmarked van and her location is currently unknown. The global media headlines may not reflect this, but Iranians continue to resist their bloodthirsty regime every day.

She, has been unjustly sentenced three times in court for speaking out against harassment. Now, facing trial for the fourth time on June 8, 2024, for the same reason, we stand in solidarity with her.

“We condemn the use of sexual assault, rape, and harassment as tools of torture and coercion by governments to suppress dissent.

We vow to continue advocating for justice and supporting victims. Together, we can put an end to government-sponsored sexual harassment against protesters.”

Nazanin Boniadi Instagram - Last year I joined leading Iranian and Afghan women in a campaign to end gender apartheid. Since then we have made huge strides towards getting it codified under international law.

Today, as the UN Fact-finding mission concludes the Islamic Republic authorities committed crimes against humanity by murdering, imprisoning, torturing and raping those who protested the murder in custody of #MahsaAmini, I recommit myself to our campaign to achieve justice and accountability by first including the term ‘gender apartheid’ in the Crimes Against Humanity treaty which is currently being drafted.

Because the entrenched segregation and abuse of women is a pillar of both the Islamic Republic and the Taliban, and crumbling this pillar will disempower them.

Thanks to @gissounia and her strategic litigation team @slpjustice at the @atlanticcouncil for leading this charge.

Please follow @endgenderapartheid.today to find out how to support this campaign. And order a T-shirt at this link, with all proceeds going to the campaign: https://www.legalize-equality.org

Notably and courageously, they appear without the compulsory hijab.

Update 1/15/24: A hijab case has been filed against the journalists a day after their release.

Nazanin Boniadi Instagram - German citizen and U.S. national #JamshidSharmahd has been brutally executed by the Islamic Republic, as confirmed by its own media. Abducted from the UAE and taken to Iran in 2020, he endured unjust imprisonment, torture, and was denied due process. Jamshid was a devoted father to Gazelle and Shayan, who campaigned tirelessly to save him, carrying forward his spirit of resistance.

This tragedy marks a moment of reckoning. Both Germany and the U.S. failed him and his family, as did the global community. Will we continue to stand by while this regime murders innocents, spreads terror, and oppresses its own people? For the sake of humanity, our silence and complacency must end—NOW.

Nazanin Boniadi Instagram - Cannes 2024 Jury Special Prize and Fipresci award winner “The Seed of the Sacred Fig” is a gripping and evocative love letter to the courageous people of Iran who have risked everything in their fight for freedom from an oppressive theocracy. This film doesn’t just tell a story; it seizes your heart and awakens your conscience. Meeting Iranian dissident filmmaker Mohammad Rasoulof, who defied all odds to create this powerful piece, was an unforgettable honor. His daring escape across treacherous borders to avoid an eight-year prison sentence for his art exemplifies the indomitable spirit of resistance. This film is a testament to the power of storytelling, showing how cinema can expose deep injustices and spark the demand for change.
Next to Mr. Rasoulof is his incredible daughter Baran. He reunited with her and his wife in Germany after 7 years apart because of the Islamic Republic regime. 🤍

Nazanin Boniadi Instagram - Thanks to Foreign Minister Penny Wong and South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas for meeting me today to discuss ways to support the Iranian people in their struggle for secular democracy and strengthening Australia’s actions in holding the Islamic Republic to account. This includes not only designating the IRGC as terrorists, but also revoking visas of regime officials and dependents and instead providing a safe haven for dissidents like @shilan.mirzaee18. We also discussed the need to have #genderapartheid recognized under international law.

Thanks also to the @sydneypeacefoundation for this opportunity in conjunction with the 2023 Sydney Peace Prize. And to the @carlazampatti Foundation for supporting this year’s program.

‏The brave people of Iran are still risking their lives for their basic rights and fundamental political change. When the Sydney Peace Foundation first approached me with this honour, my initial instinct was respectful reluctance. But after consulting with dissidents in Iran, my initial reluctance turned into a sense of duty to my compatriots, to use this opportunity to center them on the world stage, and amplify our common cause of secular democracy for Iran. This award belongs to them

‏As one prominent female dissident wanted me to relay to Iranian expats around the world: “This regime told you to leave if you don’t like its oppressive laws. They persecuted you and your families into exile in an effort to humiliate you. And when you left they tried to discredit you as being out of touch with Iran and shilling for the West. What they didn’t anticipate is that, like millions of messages in bottles, your voices would carry ours across oceans. That you would echo us loudly wherever you went in the world, even generations after your parents were forced to leave… As long as this unity remains, we will prevail

‏This is what I remain committed to. As I looked out at my mother in the audience, I was filled with hope, knowing that her generation of lionesses planted the seeds that are germinating today and will undoubtedly blossom into full freedom in the future

‏I’m deeply grateful to the @sydneypeacefoundation, @sydney_uni, @amnestyaustralia, The Carla Zampatti Foundation, @cityofsydney, Lord Mayor @clovermoore, emcee @jan__fran, and all speakers and panelists, not only for this acknowledgement, but for tangibly supporting and amplifying the #WomanLifeFreedom movement with a week full of impactful, high level activism that I was honoured to engage in.

The work continues. Woman, Life, Freedom lives on! LINK IN BIO for full event and acceptance speech

Nazanin Boniadi Instagram - 🚨Dissident rap artist #Vafadar posted a video to his Instagram account (which has since been wiped of its content) saying that the Islamic Republic authorities have gone to his home and are holding his family hostage, and demanding that he turns himself in. He says he will surrender and doesn’t know what fate awaits him. “When I saw what’s happening to the people, I couldn’t remain silent…I love you Iran, I wanted nothing but justice.” We are very concerned for his wellbeing. While the regime tries to silence his voice, we must amplify it.

Repost @vafadar_official (since deleted):

Nazanin Boniadi Instagram - Repost: @amnestyiran:

A new @amnesty investigation reveals how Islamic Republic security forces in Iran used sexual violence against protesters, including children as young as 12, to suppress the #WomanLifeFreedom uprising. Survivors shared their horrific ordeals with us, so that justice could be pursued. Amid a crisis of impunity in Iran, the international community must hold Iranian authorities accountable for their crimes under international law.

Nazanin Boniadi Instagram - The decision by the European Parliament to acknowledge Jina #MahsaAmini and the #WomanLifeFreedom movement with their 2023 Sakharov Prize is an important one. Keeping a light on the plight of the brave women and people of Iran who are risking everything for freedom, is a commitment to peace in the region and beyond. I hope they follow this acknowledgement with action to disempower the Islamic Republic and empower the Iranian people to achieve the freedom and democracy they are risking everything for.

Nazanin Boniadi Instagram - Congratulations to #NargesMohammadi for receiving the 2023 #NobelPeacePrize. She is a fierce and persistent advocate for human rights in Iran and currently imprisoned for her courageous work.

Nazanin Boniadi Instagram - In light of ongoing atrocities by the Islamic Republic on the people of Iran, their support of Hamas, and threats against British nationals, I met again with Security Minister @tomtugendhat to urge the UK government to implement policies to urgently address the root cause of these problems: the regime itself. This includes expulsion of regime officials and cronies, and holding the regime and IRGC to account for crimes against humanity and terrorism. And providing a safe haven for dissidents.

Update - My position on the conflict in the Middle East:

As an advocate for human rights, justice, freedom and peace, I stand firmly with all innocent civilians caught in the crossfires of terrorism and war.

I unequivocally condemn Hamas’s brutalities against the people of Israel. I also condemn them and their primary funder the Islamic Republic regime, for hostage taking and hiding behind their own people to achieve their political agendas. Let’s be clear, they do not care about the Palestinian or Iranian people or their rights. They know that their atrocities will lead to the devastation of their own people. To defeat Hamas we must disempower its enabler, the Islamic Republic.

In exercising its right to self-defense, Israel is bound by the rules of war and must distinguish itself from the non-state, designated terrorist organization Hamas, by not using indiscriminate force. It must not provide Hamas with more propaganda to use for radicalization. That is exactly what Hamas seeks to fan the flames of extremism. Breaking the cycle of perpetual violence takes extreme moral courage. My heart breaks for every innocent life lost.

Nazanin Boniadi - 78.7K Likes - The time has come to declare gender apartheid a crime.

Nazanin Boniadi - 41.3K Likes - I’m horrified to learn that my good friend and prominent Iranian journalist @pouriazeraati was stabbed multiple times outside his London home.

For shame. 💔

Roya Heshmati (slide 1) received 74 lashes after being convicted for refusing to abide by the Islamic Republic’s draconian hijab law. “I won’t cover up” she pronounced even as they executed her barbaric punishment in what she described as “a medieval torture chamber.” Zeynab (Bahar) Khonyabpour (slide 2) has received a two year prison sentence for sharing photos without hijab on social media. They risk everything for freedom even as the world has moved on.

Googoosh does not only represent nostalgia for the Iran we lost, but is also an inspiration for the Iran we are fighting to create—an Iran of freedom and equality, where women’s voices are amplified, not silenced, and where artists are celebrated, not persecuted.

Nazanin Boniadi - 25.1K Likes - Thanks to Foreign Minister Penny Wong and South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas for meeting me today to discuss ways to support the Iranian people in their struggle for secular democracy and strengthening Australia’s actions in holding the Islamic Republic to account.

The work continues. Woman, Life, Freedom lives on! LINK IN BIO for full event and acceptance speech

This weekend’s protests against ongoing executions in Iran have been organized in memory of three protesters, Majid Kazemi, Saeed Yaghoubi, and Saleh Mirhashemi, who wrote “Don’t let them kill us” on a note that was smuggled out of prison two days before they were arbitrarily executed on May 19, 2023, for participation in the “Woman, Life, Freedom” protests.

Nazanin Boniadi - 16.4K Likes - In light of ongoing atrocities by the Islamic Republic on the people of Iran, their support of Hamas, and threats against British nationals, I met again with Security Minister @tomtugendhat to urge the UK government to implement policies to urgently address the root cause of these problems: the regime itself.
