Nicholas Kristof Instagram - From my latest column. I’m here in the Middle East covering the story.
Nicholas Kristof Instagram - Jimmy Carter is one of a kind, and I’ve become such a fan of him and of his heroic work to battle diseases. He has improved more lives over a longer period than just about anybody in the world today. In this 2007 photo, I’m with him in a remote part of Ethiopia as he strives to eliminate a once common ailment called River Blindness. He was also a far better president than is usually acknowledged. At 98, he is now entering hospice. What a great, great, great man and public servant. Thank you, President Carter, for your life of service.
Nicholas Kristof Instagram - From my weekend column.
Nicholas Kristof Instagram - A year ago, my mom suffered a serious stroke. But it takes more than a stroke to fell someone as strong and determined as Jane Kristof. A year later, she’s still taking the dogs on long walks twice a day on @kristoffarms, and at 91 she’s still interested in world news. She remains a wonderful role model, and she sends her thanks to all who have sent love and concern since the stroke. ❤️❤️❤️
Nicholas Kristof Instagram - We ran this @gettyimages photo with my column today about #Gaza. The column quoted from the WhatsApp texts of a linguistics scholar in Gaza to his friend, recounting all that he and his family have endured over five months of war. It’s heartbreaking, and this photo captured that raw emotion as well. Gazans have been dehumanized, and we’ll get a more humane policy when we again put human faces on their suffering. I hope you’ll read the column, too.
Nicholas Kristof Instagram - Bravo to @mohammedsalem85 for winning @worldpressphoto of the year award for this image of a woman in Gaza embracing the body of her five-year-old niece, killed in an Israeli air strike. Heartbreaking. My weekend column is a long look at the Gaza war and the way it has become an albatross around President Biden’s neck. It has become his war, a blot on his legacy, a challenge for his campaign. I argue that Biden repeatedly missed opportunities to improve the situation in Gaza and now finds himself in a strategic cul de sac. Hope you’ll read it.
Nicholas Kristof Instagram - From my weekend column about President Biden losing his way, as I see it, in Gaza.
Nicholas Kristof Instagram - Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter, a champion of mental health issues and important adviser to her husband, President Carter, died this morning at 96. RIP, Mrs Carter, and condolences to the family.
Nicholas Kristof Instagram - From my latest column about Gaza and the Middle East.
Nicholas Kristof Instagram - This fellow here is a special one: a 40-year veteran of 160 countries around our globe, witnessing and then sharing with us stories of massacres, famines, brothels packed with stolen girls and women, and equally, simple and scalable grassroots efforts that can lift entire communities out of poverty, and the at times shocking heroes who make such transformation possible in the most impossible circumstances.

@nickkristof has a new book: “Chasing Hope: A Reporter’s Life.” It is part adventure story. (Being chased by warlords! Tense border crossings! That damaged plane crashing Congo!) A love story (he shares one of his two Pulitzer Prizes with his equally gifted wife, Sheryl WuDunn), and much more. It is—however implausible it may seem on the surface—about hope. “I am a scarred optimist,” Nick writes. First writing about millions of children in India dying from diarrheal disease, this essay caught the eye of two readers in Seattle; in response, they founded the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Nick has transformed the opinion-editorial essay from a historical recording of government, policy, and politicians into urgent, vibrant, and data-informed stories of the folks at the farthest reaches on earth whose lives are shaped by those powerful people. I am so grateful to call Sheryl and Nick friends, to Nick for writing the forward to my first book, for being included in their extraordinary documentary, “A Path Appears,” about human trafficking in Nashville, TN, and to be fellow wilderness hikers! To you, Nick!
Nicholas Kristof Instagram - This is how Vladimir Putin is perceived in Eastern Europe, in the lands Russia once ruled. This is a poster in Latvia; I snapped it while on a road trip through the Baltics, the topic of my column today. Some Westerners think Putin is misunderstood or was provoked; I think he’s always been a menace. He came to power in 1999 after staging a brutal war in Chechnya to prove his toughness. And there were apartment bombings then in Russia that Putin blamed on Chechen terrorists but that he himself probably (not definitely) arranged. In traveling through the Baltics, I saw that even the Russian speaking minority has now mostly turned against Putin.
Nicholas Kristof Instagram - I took the family to Auschwitz today (we’re in Poland) and it cast a shadow over the day. As it should. It’s such a reminder of the human capacity for calculated evil. I had a great aunt, a member of the Polish resistance, who died here in 1943. I try to fend of the grimness by thinking of the courage of Aunt Izabela and so many others (including my late friend Elie Wiesel) whose humanity shone so brightly here. RIP all those who died in Auschwitz and Birkenau.

Nicholas Kristof Instagram - In 2015 I interviewed this farmer, Abdul-Majeed Hassan, on the West Bank—and he was so tormented by Israeli settlers that I didn’t see how it could get worse. I revisited him last week—that photo is from our recent interview—and the situation has gotten worse, much worse. Settlers have cut down his olive trees, burned his cars, broken his tractor, set fire to his sheep shed and tried to invade his home. His wife argues for moving out, to avoid being burned alive. That’s life in the West Bank today, and I have a new column out today outlining how desperate conditions are, and how little the U.S. is doing to address it. Check it out.
Nicholas Kristof Instagram - Courtesy of the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office, the most famous mug shot in US history. It’s of a guy who has now been indicted four times on felony counts.
Nicholas Kristof Instagram - History. For the first time, a president becomes a felon.
Nicholas Kristof Instagram - A milestone in the history of accountability.
Nicholas Kristof Instagram - I was in Mississippi reporting on a project about the state’s progress in education—and what do I stumble across in a second grade classroom but this poster telling kids about opinion writing. I wanted to take it back to the @nytopinion columnists’ row! I was seriously impressed by how much progress Mississippi has made in early grade education. For children in poverty, it now ties for first in the nation in fourth-grade reading and is second in math. Who would have thought this possible in Mississippi? And that means no other state has an excuse for failing to get kids to read! Check out my column on it!

Nicholas Kristof Instagram - I’m full of admiration for these Ukrainian war veterans I met at the Superhumans hospital in Lviv, Ukraine. Most were planning to return to the front on artificial limbs. That grit and resilience is why Ukraine is beating Russia. I write about them in my column today in @nytopinion

Nicholas Kristof Instagram - My valentine, right after we got engaged. It has been a few years now, and our love has only grown.
Nicholas Kristof Instagram - This article from 34 years ago today may be the one that I was saddest to write. You never forget witnessing a modern army turn weapons of war on unarmed civilians. But I also try to remember not only the brutality of the government and troops that night — or their lies today as they attempt to suppress that history—but also the courage of ordinary citizens who stood up to the army and tried to protect the protesting students. RIP, brave souls.

Nicholas Kristof Instagram - Marathon proud!

Nicholas Kristof Instagram - Dianne Feinstein, pioneering female politician and expert on international security — and just a lovely person — is dead at 90. I hope she’s remembered not for her decline in recent years but for her trailblazing career that did so much good. RIP, Dianne. What a career of public service you had!
Nicholas Kristof Instagram - Much more interesting than my Tom McCall Lecture at @oregonstate University were these food delivery robots. You order food and a robot delivers it; you open it with your code to get your sandwich and coffee. Engineering students rock!
Nicholas Kristof Instagram - Backpacking the Oregon Coast Trail with my wife and daughter today, I came across this three-foot long jellyfish, still alive. There were about a dozen of this kind of jellyfish washed up over a couple of miles of deserted beach south of Cape Lookout. Anyone know what kind it is?
Nicholas Kristof Instagram - Sheryl @wudunn and I were dressing for a black tie dinner when I discovered that I’d left my cufflinks back home in Oregon. No problem: Sheryl fashioned cufflinks out of dental floss! A great life hack. I’m so glad I married up.
Nicholas Kristof Instagram - Somalis are very entrepreneurial, and Mogadishu is bustling. It’s dangerous, and I could visit only with an armored vehicle and an escort of many gunmen, but at some point when the war ends it will be a boomtown benefiting from investments by the Somali diaspora. I wanted to share what the city looks like, and a glimpse of its dynamism.
Nicholas Kristof Instagram - Happy 92nd birthday to my mom, Jane Kristof! Here she is with me this morning on our farm, the cider apple orchard behind us, and Connie beside us. May we all do so well at 92!!
Nicholas Kristof Instagram - This bear visited our farm and showed up on our wildlife camera—and look what he’s got in his mouth! A @kristoffarms apple! We’re thinking of making him a mascot for our cider, with a cider club membership and twice-a-year delivery to his den—as long as he promises to drink in moderation.
Nicholas Kristof Instagram - There is so much pain and war and suffering around the world, so many reasons to despair — but let’s not lose sight of what we can achieve when we work together to ease that suffering. My year-end column notes that global child mortality appears to have set a new low this year of 3.6 percent of children dying by age five. One million fewer kids died in 2023 than in 2016. Global extreme poverty also hit a new low, with 100,000 people exiting poverty each day. All this should spur us on to address the other challenges we face, from war to climate change.
Nicholas Kristof Instagram - My weekend column for the @nytimes encourages young people to travel off the beaten path, to build perspective and empathy. My own youthful travels shaped my life and career and made me more attuned to human rights issues. Here I’m riding on the train in north Sudan to Khartoum. Fortunately, there were no tunnels.
Nicholas Kristof Instagram - So tell me: Do you like the cover of my new book? It’ll be out in May and is now available for preorder wherever books are sold. I think you’ll like it, and I hope you’ll order one. 😀
Nicholas Kristof Instagram - The family that skis together stays together. Or gets broken legs together. We’re on Mt Bachelor in Central Oregon. I backpack every summer around Three Sisters (the mountains in the background), so it’s very cool to ski the same area in winter.
Nicholas Kristof Instagram - Any tropical disease experts out there? I met this man in northern Sierra Leone, and he told me he had had this unexplained open sore on his leg for more than six months. The doctors had no explanation (it wasn't from trauma) and offered no treatment, and it wasn't getting better.

I think it might be Buruli Ulcer, and I wrote the words down for him and told him to show the hospital (where his wife works as an assistant nurse). But of course I have no idea, and one senior doctor in Sierra Leone I asked wasn't even sure that Buruli Ulcer existed in the country. Still, I saw dozens of similar cases of Buruli Ulcer at a hospital in the neighboring country of Liberia, where it was likewise thought that Buruli Ulcer was exceedingly rare -- and then once the hospital offered treatment, large numbers of impoverished farmers turned out to be affected. Most of the patients, like this man, were farmers who lived near swamps and were exposed to the stagnant water.

This man was very stoical, because it must be excruciatingly painful. If it is Buruli Ulcer it can be treated with a cheap antibiotic like Rifampin. I can get a message to him and his wife through someone else in the city (Makeni) who has a phone and is on Whatsapp, so is you have suggestions, let me know.
Nicholas Kristof Instagram - One of the paradoxes of Somalia is that for all the starvation and war, it’s also quite beautiful. Since I’ve shown photos of its troubles, I also wanted to share photos of its lovely coast, with Mogadishu in the background. Some day, I hope tourists can visit without armored vehicles.

Nicholas Kristof Instagram - Lunch today with my Yamhill-Carlton High School journalism teacher, Olga Petrovich. I’m very grateful to her, for high school was an unequal exchange. She taught me so much, while my trouble-making editorials gave her gray hairs. Huge thanks to her and to all my teachers!!
Nicholas Kristof Instagram - Happy Valentine’s Day from this young couple. We took this photo when we were dating, er, seems like just a few years ago. May you too find lasting love!
Nicholas Kristof Instagram - My weekend column was about deepfakes that target famous women and ordinary teenage girls alike. Companies make money by concocting degrading sex videos of them, often with sadistic elements—and then Google drives traffic to them. It’s hard for me to see why Google wants to support this non-consensual world of misogyny and exploitation.
Nicholas Kristof Instagram - Our new neighbor! She has shown up twice in the last week on the game camera on @kristoffarms. No wonder Sheryl makes me take out the garbage at night.

Nicholas Kristof Instagram - Backpacking with my daughter, Caroline, and her boyfriend, Adam, on the Pacific Northwest Trail in WA state. I wrote my column today about the glories of hiking in the wilderness.

Nicholas Kristof Instagram - Really proud of my buddy Eric, who just got a bank account for the first time in several decades. Thanks, @officialumpquabank in Yamhill, for making it work. Before, he had to pay $8 each time he cashed a check. Almost 5 percent of American households are unbanked, and its a huge burden. So bravo, Eric, and may others who are excluded likewise get access to the banking system.
Nicholas Kristof Instagram - Happy Fathers Day! This is my dad and me in the 1980s on a visit back to the Valsetz logging camp where he worked and learned English after arriving in Oregon as a refugee in 1952. He was an extraordinary man who shaped me in a thousand ways.
Nicholas Kristof Instagram - Twenty years after the Iraq War began, I’ve been thinking of covering that war, the lost lives and injuries among Iraqis and Americans alike, the false information and delusions that led to the war, the journalistic failures and my own close calls there. Here’s to hoping that we never do something like that again. This photo was in the early days of the war, near Basra.
Nicholas Kristof Instagram - With the Nassar family on their farm on the West Bank. The Nassars are Christian Palestinians who quote Martin Luther King and promote nonviolence—even as violent settlers attack them and try to steal their land. My column today is about them and others preaching nonviolence. Their farm, Tent of Nations, happily accepts volunteers from America and Europe, for the volunteers provide sone protection: Settlers are more restrained in front of foreign witnesses. If you’re interested in volunteering, check out the Tent of Nations website.
Nicholas Kristof Instagram - In rural Rajasthan in India, I came across this free public preschool. It also serves kids nutritious meals. Apparently this is now common in most Indian states. In the past I’ve seen disastrous government schools in India (rural Bihar!), but there clearly is progress in education, albeit not enough. And I wish the US had free public pre-K and child care like this. If rural India can do it, how is it that America can’t?
Nicholas Kristof Instagram - Walking the dogs on The Most Beautiful Farm in the World this evening. Oregon does have lovely sunsets, at least when there is a sun. Connie, who is Chief Security Officer at @kristoffarms, is inspecting gopher holes and weighing war strategies against the rodent armies.
Nicholas Kristof Instagram - Oops. The cougar from a game camera on @kristoffarms was cut off in my last post — my incompetence. But it’s such a magnificent animal that it deserves being fully seen. If we can get him in front of a bottle our cider, we’ll use him for marketing. That said, I’m not sure I’d want to bump into him in the orchard on a dark night.
Nicholas Kristof Instagram - On Father’s Day, thinking of my own dad and his incredible journey. He was an Armenian who grew up in Eastern Europe, spied on the Nazis, lost family members to both the Nazis and the Soviets, was in a concentration camp and asbestos mine, escaped to the West, arrived penniless in America in 1952 and fell in love with Oregon. His life was saved by others, and he paid it forward and taught me to as well. Here we’re loading hay on our farm when I was about 13. An amazing man.
Nicholas Kristof Instagram - We were planning to backpack in the Cascades this week, but smoke from forest fires sent us off to the Oregon Coast Trail instead. The trail is incomplete — there are road walks where no trail or beach is available — but still glorious. We used the @faroutguides app for navigation, and it’s a very different kind of backpacking when you can stop for a meal at @moschowder during a break. Sheryl @wudunn likes this more than meals of protein bars and prefers the sea air to clouds of mosquitoes, and Caroline is happy with everything wild. The Oregon Coast Trail is also a reminder of how much of the Oregon coast is empty and deserted even in August. Spectacular!

Nicholas Kristof Instagram - That’s me at 11 with my goats on our family farm. I dug up the photo because I wrote this weekend about a girl in California who raised a goat for 4-H, fell in love with it — and then was told by her county fair to give it up for slaughter. I think the little girl knew something many don’t: There’s no bright line between the pets we pamper in our homes and the “beasts” abused by factory farming systems in our barns.
Nicholas Kristof Instagram - We’re snowed in, it’s cold and we may lose power. But on the other hand, is there a more serene place to walk the dogs than @kristoffarms in the snow? This is why I love this farm I grew up on!

Nicholas Kristof Instagram - One of the best things about having an apple orchard is…the blossoms! @kristoffarms
Nicholas Kristof Instagram - Sheryl and I cheered the bottling of our 2022 Chardonnay and Pinot Noir! We’ve been planning this since 2018, so we’re thrilled to see it happen. Many thanks to our friends and neighbors at @elkcove, who are great winemakers—and great custodians of the land. We’ll let the wine mature in the bottle and ship after March, mostly through our @kristoffarms website.

Nicholas Kristof Instagram - I’ve long admired @adamgrant’s books, so I was thrilled to get this endorsement from him for my forthcoming memoir, “Chasing Hope.” And “Chasing Hope” is now available for pre-order from all bookshops, if you’re looking for a present that will build with anticipation. 😀
Nicholas Kristof Instagram - Connie and I spent the weekend hiking on the PCT and Eagle Creek trails over the weekend, in northern Oregon. Eagle Creek Trail is an old favorite that I hike at least once a year, but I also love the PCT south of Wahtum Lake and Indian Springs. Wilderness therapy!!
Nicholas Kristof Instagram - I’m thrilled that Buzz Books has listed its buzzy books for spring/summer 2024 and that my memoir, “Chasing Hope,” is being buzzed about. Maybe that’s because “Chasing Hope” offers hope at a time we all need some. And — hint, hint — “Chasing Hope” is available now for pre-order online or wherever books are sold. Enjoy!
Nicholas Kristof Instagram - I just backpacked the loop around Three Sisters mountains in Oregon, and it was glorious as always (I do it pretty much every year). Sadly, our dog Connie is aging out of backpacking, so I was on my own. I’ve been hiking the Cascades since I was a kid, and the big difference: more fires. Now I pass through a huge burn, and this time there was smoke in the area from distant fires. Firefighting is also consuming the Forest Service budget so that less is left for trail maintenance. And yet! All that said, wilderness is still heaven.

Nicholas Kristof Instagram - I first went to the Oregon Shakespeare Festival as a kid 51 years ago, and now I go every year with my family and a bunch of friends — a group of 29 of us this year. One of those friends is fellow journalist from Oregon @anncurry (who grew up in Ashland). The @osfashland festival, like lots of live theater, has struggled in recent years, but it has a terrific new artistic director, Tim Bond — and that’s Tim sandwiched between Ann and me with the set for Twelfth Night behind us (a wonderful production). We’re confident he’ll have the theater company thriving again soon and we’re cheering him on. The festival is so important for the culture and economy of the region — and it certainly enriches our lives each year.
Nicholas Kristof Instagram - The U.S.-led airstrikes on the Houthis in Yemen have me recalling this interview with Mohammad al-Houthi in Sanaa, Yemen, in 2018. A wild interview. The challenge for the West is how to deter Houthi attacks on shipping without triggering a wider war or amplifying the suffering of ordinary Yemenis.
Nicholas Kristof Instagram - Finished books! Publication day is still 10 days away, but I received my first copy of my new memoir, “Chasing Hope”! And it’s available now for preorder so it can arrive at your house on publication day. Always something thrilling about seeing the first copy of a new book one has spent years working on. Thanks, @aaknopf @penguinrandomhouse
Nicholas Kristof Instagram - Last backpacking trip of the season! I took Connie on the 50-mile loop around Three Sisters wilderness in central Oregon. It was cold at night so I borrowed her friend @tux.talk’s dog sleeping bag, but Connie didn’t quite get the hang of it. Or maybe she just preferred trying to burrow into mine. Sigh. I hate to put my backpack away now.

Nicholas Kristof Instagram - Winding up our hike on the Oregon Coast Trail. Perhaps one sign that God is a west coaster is that the sun sets over the ocean. East coasters get sunrises over the ocean, but who sees sunrises?! Our hike, from south of Tillamook to Newport, has also been a reminder of how many of our beaches are deserted even in August. East coasters get sunrises over the ocean, but who sees sunrises?! Our hike, from south of Tillamook to Newport, has also been a reminder of how many of our beaches are deserted even in August. A glorious break with Sheryl @wudunn and with Caroline!

Nicholas Kristof Instagram - Happy World Cider Day, from our cider apple orchard! The bees did their pollination very well, and it looks as if we’ll have a good harvest this fall. We also are going to launch three of our 2022 ciders next weekend at a party in Portland, so if you’re in the area do swing by (RSVP first on kristoffarms.com). One of the new ciders is a Pinot Noir co-ferment, and it’s delicious!! More info on the @kristoffarms website. People sometimes wonder why I mess with farming and cider, and I think there are two reasons. First, I don’t paint or do music, so creating great cider is my artistic outlet. Second, I love my column but it’s sometimes like shouting in the wind. On the other hand, if an apple tree is leaning precariously, I can stabilize it and the problem is solved in an instant. Very satisfying!!

Nicholas Kristof Instagram - It’s Pinot Noir grape harvest day at @kristoffarms! Thrilling! One of the photos shows me with superb winemaker Adam Campbell of @elkcove and Jessica Dunham of @resultspartners — our heroes on a day like this. Our vines bow to them. Our first Pinot wine, from the ‘22 harvest, is maturing in bottles and will be ready to drink before long. We’ll be sending out info via our newsletter that you can sign up for at KristofFarms.com

A year later, she’s still taking the dogs on long walks twice a day on @kristoffarms, and at 91 she’s still interested in world news. She remains a wonderful role model, and she sends her thanks to all who have sent love and concern since the stroke. ❤️❤️❤️

Nicholas Kristof - 3.4K Likes - This fellow here is a special one: a 40-year veteran of 160 countries around our globe, witnessing and then sharing with us stories of massacres, famines, brothels packed with stolen girls and women, and equally, simple and scalable grassroots efforts that can lift entire communities out of poverty, and the at times shocking heroes who make such transformation possible in the most impossible circumstances.

But I also try to remember not only the brutality of the government and troops that night — or their lies today as they attempt to suppress that history—but also the courage of ordinary citizens who stood up to the army and tried to protect the protesting students. RIP, brave souls.

It’s dangerous, and I could visit only with an armored vehicle and an escort of many gunmen, but at some point when the war ends it will be a boomtown benefiting from investments by the Somali diaspora. I wanted to share what the city looks like, and a glimpse of its dynamism.

So bravo, Eric, and may others who are excluded likewise get access to the banking system.

In the past I’ve seen disastrous government schools in India (rural Bihar!), but there clearly is progress in education, albeit not enough. And I wish the US had free public pre-K and child care like this. If rural India can do it, how is it that America can’t?

The trail is incomplete — there are road walks where no trail or beach is available — but still glorious. We used the @faroutguides app for navigation, and it’s a very different kind of backpacking when you can stop for a meal at @moschowder during a break. Sheryl @wudunn likes this more than meals of protein bars and prefers the sea air to clouds of mosquitoes, and Caroline is happy with everything wild. The Oregon Coast Trail is also a reminder of how much of the Oregon coast is empty and deserted even in August. Spectacular!

Many thanks to our friends and neighbors at @elkcove, who are great winemakers—and great custodians of the land. We’ll let the wine mature in the bottle and ship after March, mostly through our @kristoffarms website.

Nicholas Kristof - 1K Likes - I’m thrilled that Buzz Books has listed its buzzy books for spring/summer 2024 and that my memoir, “Chasing Hope,” is being buzzed about. Maybe that’s because “Chasing Hope” offers hope at a time we all need some. And — hint, hint — “Chasing Hope” is available now for pre-order online or wherever books are sold. Enjoy!

Nicholas Kristof - 1K Likes - I just backpacked the loop around Three Sisters mountains in Oregon, and it was glorious as always (I do it pretty much every year).

Nicholas Kristof - 0.9K Likes - I first went to the Oregon Shakespeare Festival as a kid 51 years ago, and now I go every year with my family and a bunch of friends — a group of 29 of us this year.

The challenge for the West is how to deter Houthi attacks on shipping without triggering a wider war or amplifying the suffering of ordinary Yemenis.

And it’s available now for preorder so it can arrive at your house on publication day. Always something thrilling about seeing the first copy of a new book one has spent years working on. Thanks, @aaknopf @penguinrandomhouse

It was cold at night so I borrowed her friend @tux.talk’s dog sleeping bag, but Connie didn’t quite get the hang of it. Or maybe she just preferred trying to burrow into mine. Sigh. I hate to put my backpack away now.

East coasters get sunrises over the ocean, but who sees sunrises?! Our hike, from south of Tillamook to Newport, has also been a reminder of how many of our beaches are deserted even in August. A glorious break with Sheryl @wudunn and with Caroline!
