Caption : Life is hard. But it’s worth it to try. Because who I get to be as a result of trying is worth it. Even in the darkest moments, there exists the potential for redemption, rebuilding, and the reclamation of one’s life… Today’s guest is a living embodiment of this truth. This week Osher Günsberg (Australia’s most prominent television host) goes deep and gets vulnerable on his struggles with substance abuse, his hard-fought journey back to sanity and well-being after a terrifying break from reality, and his ongoing commitment to raising mental health awareness. Caption : 14 years and one day ago in NYC was the last night I ever had a drink. I couldn’t stop. Even though I’d tried many times. I didn’t know how to not do it, but I knew that I had to stop or I was going to end up financially ruined, divorced and dead. So I asked someone who had what I wanted how they did it, and then just did what they told me. Like they say, it’s a day at a time. Sometimes it’s one hour, or five minutes at a time. But slowly, in the words of @matthewmitcham88 – you build up a life in sobriety that you’re not willing to lose . There’s no way this happened because of self-will or willpower. That was the problem. This is the result of humility being thrust upon me and knowing that my way of handling things wasn’t working, and that other people had better ideas that were healthier and less destructive. Do I do it perfectly? No. Am I still an untold punish to my wife? More than I’d like to be (my account of this is probably different from hers – believe her version). Even though sometimes it’s hard – the life, the family, the career I have now would have been impossible were I still drinking. It’s no exaggeration to say that if I was still drinking and using I’d be long gone. So today I’m grateful for all the kind, smart and generous people who showed me how to do this, because you all gave me a life I could never have dreamed of. xxLikes : 9690

This conversation with Jelena Dokic brought me to tears. By telling her story Jelena has proven that when we own our stories and share them with others, we not only help ourselves, but we help each other. We are never alone in our experiences and we can learn from our mistakes to make the future better for others. Jelena Dokic is the definition of resilience and in our conversation, Jelena shares the real and practical ways she worked through her trauma. And I hope it leaves you feeling inspired and empowered. Loving detachment is a very difficult thing to do – however it’s vital to get help for the people you love. Hearing Jelena’s story and experiences, I was blown away by how incredibly resilient she is. And it all clicked in my brain. To bounce back, to overcome trauma and life’s hardships, we need vulnerability. And on the flip side, we need resilience to be vulnerable and connect with other people. Caption : Last week, I crossed the threshold of 14 years of sobriety. 14 years, which sounds like a lot. Really it was just 5114 days done pretty much exactly the same. My man David taught me the pretty simple formula: Get to bed without drinking or using, don’t hurt myself or anyone else, get help if I need it, try to help someone else, if I make a mistake try to make it right as quick a I can, then get your head on the pillow. You do that, you’ve done it perfectly. Simply do it again tomorrow. And that’s kind of it. There is absolutely no question that if I hadn’t stopped drinking I wouldn’t be here. However, getting sober is one thing. Staying sober is another. At first, it’s pretty clear what you’ve got to do because the whole thing is new and you’re learning a new way of living your life and your choices are pretty clear. Yet as you get a bit of time up, you realise that while the problems that came from your drinking aren’t a daily occurrence any more – the problems that you were drinking to avoid still linger. So you have to deal with that stuff. I made a podcast about some of the ways I deal with that stuff. I hope you like it, or that it is something you can send to a mate who might need to hear it. I’d known her dog Pippet for almost as long (she is pictured here when Mel opened my first photographic exhibit at her gallery back in 2010) . The thing about humans is we choose companion animals that don’t live as long as we do. Alas, Pippet has gone to chase squeaky balls in the sky. She was my first oodle, super good for cuddles when I stayed in the spare room and a loyal companion to my dearest Mel. I am sad for you my dear friend. My hope is that everyone throws a ball to their doggo today in honour of that lovely pup. In a world of good girls, she was the best.Likes : 700

Caption : Speaking with @gusworland on wedensday I got to thinking about being mentally fit and wondering what is the one mental exercise that can give you the mental equivalent of oiled-up washboard abs? For me, its noticing. Noticing that… I’m feeling frustrated. My eye hurts. The noisy room full of kids has suddenly gotten concerningly quiet. Noticing gives us time to be present and to bring our mind out of catastophising, and into right now. I use this all the time, even when I’ve been really unwell. In fact – this technique has saved my life. Search Better Than Yesterday in your podcast app or click the linkLikes : 633

Caption : Taryn Brumfitt is here, she’s the 2023 Australian of the Year. Leader of the @bodyimagemovement, an Adelaide-based organisation that teaches people to love and appreciate their bodies. She has made two brilliant films, Embrace and Embrace Kids – the first film explores the serious issue of women’s body loathing and Taryn’s path to body acceptance, her second film Embrace Kids has a message for nine- to 14-year-olds to move, nourish, respect and appreciate what their bodies can do. She’s a four-time bestselling author, including the wonderful kid’s book “Chico the Schnauzer” which I read to Wolf at bedtime sometimes – as well as a two-time marathon runner, and mum to four children. Taryn is absolutely marvellous. We cover a lot in this conversation. Self Talk, Body Image, Self Acceptance and the problem with comparison. We also pick apart the tricky business of dating in middle age, and realising that someone new is going to see you naked. It’s fantastic. Enjoy the show. Caption : @audreygriffen and I used to lie in bed every night and read stories with G. It was absolutely wonderful to be all snuggly with those two, taking turns at reading the pages. Then one night when she was about 12 I asked “what book do you want to read with us tonight GG?” and she replied “I’m ok without a story tonight, thank you”. And that was it. We had not realised that the night before had been the last night we ever read stories to her. I was working with @stavb105 at the time and he told me “one day I will put down my 4yr old daughter after carrying her and I won’t have realised it’s the last time I ever got the chance to do that – so every time I do get the chance, I treat it like it’s the last time I do it”. It was Stav who got me onto the concept known as “The Last time”. When you consider the absolute possibility – even though that possibility may be very remote – that something you do today could be the last time you ever do it, that thing becomes ever more precious. Today’s episode expands on this, and if you’re willing – I even walk through a few of the more difficult things to consider. Not to be grim or morbid, but as a way to enjoy and even relish in the small moments that lined up end to end become this one short life we have. Caption : Addiction is a misunderstood disease. By the time you’re asking someone to “behave responsibly”, their dopamine system is so disregulated that any message which gets in the way of the addictive behaviour from happening is futile. Sure, it might be a choice the first time however once it stops being a choice – the outcomes for the addict are sadly predictable with the timelines ranging from decades to less than a few months in some cases. After Di Young’s epic live episode from @sxswsydney on Wednesday, I wanted to put a show out that gives a basic outline of the way addiction can work, and how the people around the addict may be affected as well. However, after seeing a poster for a lost cat on the way to dropoff the other day, I got curious about house cats and their effect on native wildlife – and the numbers are frankly staggering. – listen now, search Better Than Yesterday where your podcasts are or use the link in the thingLikes : 347

Caption : I learned something new with my psych the other day – I have a lingering hidden trauma response which has been messing with my life. You’ve heard of “Fight or Flight” well, there’s a 3rd option: Freeze. I didn’t realise that a freeze response has been stuffing me up for decades until just the other day. (Turns out it’s the reason I took a nap on 9/11). Today’s podcast is a deep dive into how ancient hidden trauma responses can still be messing with your life, where they come from, what to do about them, how tonic mobility can even stop you from talking (which is what happens to me) and a surprising aside into the hunting behaviour of Orcas. Caption : I love my country. I love Australia so much, I became an Australian. And if push came to shove, I’d do whatever my haggard old frame that’s filled with prosthetics could do in order to defend it. As someone who grew up around the military (my Mum worked as a civilian doctor for the ADF for fifteen years) I came to understand what it really meant to be in the army. As an adult travelling the world, far away from the safety of my country of Australia – I saw with my own eyes how sometimes a credible military consequence is required to ensure that diplomacy has a chance to work. Don’t get me wrong, I firmly believe that absolutely everything possible must be done to avoid violence. Yet when the decision to escalate to violence is made by someone else – then a government has few options on the table when it comes to self-protection. Yet what happens when the government’s decision to send our military into a war zone under the auspices of protecting our country no longer serves us? What happens to the men and women who we send to the other side of the world on these missions, and what happens when they come back? In recent years, it’s fair to say that the Australian SAS has come under intense scrutiny. On today’s episode @mark.a.wales, author and former SAS commander might just surprise you with his views on national security. It takes a tonne of courage to stand up for what’s right. I’m grateful that this week of all weeks, Mark made the time to come to the house for a chat. Search “Better Than Yesterday” where you get your podcasts or click the link in the stories.Likes : 300

She’s touring once again, kicking off in Perth in May, then heading east stopping all stations, Adelaide, Melbourne, The Gold Coast and Sydney which is already sold out – she’s bringing some family with her as you’re about to hear she is very very excited. About it. If this is your first time hearing about this remarkable woman, let me bring you up to speed. Melissa Etheridge is a Grammy Winning, Oscar Winning, Singer Songwriter superstar. For over 30 years her distinctive voice has told stories of love, passion and heartache. She’s publicly lived through challenges that most people experience in private – her public journey of coming out, a cancer diagnosis, hairloss from the chemo, and recently the absolutely tragic loss of her son Beckett who passed away from an opioid overdose at just 21. Yeah, heads up – we talk about that, and as you can see I end up crying in this chat. Melissa has used her grief to explore ways of treating addiction by supporting world-first research into the use of plant medicines previously associated with sacred ceremony and how they might be able to save lives so affected by addiction. I mean, spite can be a heck of a motivator (just ask Larry David) but it’s not very sustainable. But what about proving yourself wrong? What if it’s a version of yourself that reckons you can’t do it? Would you be willing to prove them wrong? I know there’s a better way to do these things. And it’s to do with knowing when I’m hot, knowing when I’m cold and then taking myself out of the decision. Caption : Do you own a sauna? Have you christened it in the traditional way? Because yes, there’s absolutely a way to do it and I’ll tell you the whole thing on today’s podcast, which is all about the sauna. It’s no hyperbole – since the sauna came to live in our house, I’ve never slept better and I’ve been enjoying remarkable improvement in mood. Every now and then after a podcast, guests will hang out and get in there with me to continue the conversation. It’s a lovely place to chat. The science behind it is really quite fascinating, so I dug right into it on the show today, the tradition however is equally fascinating so if you’ll excuse my terrible impression of @henrikis I hope you get a lot out of it. Caption : This week my guest is the inspirational SHARON CALLISTER – she’s the CEO of @mission_aust. Sharon is one of these rare humans that’s just born to help. Can’t stop her, won’t stop her. Among the things she’s focusing on – is addressing the grim challenge of rising homelessness among women in Australia. You might be confronted by some of the misconceptions about homelessness in Australia. Sharon shares some pretty intense stories of people she’s worked with who have experienced homelessness and the challenges they face. Helping an individual is important, however it’s treating a symptom not a cause, so Sharon has a lot to say about the need for investment in social and affordable housing and the power of early intervention. We do talk about domestic and family violence and the role of education in changing attitudes and behaviors. I know it sounds grim – but I promise you this is a conversation full of hope. How many things in your life are you not doing right now, things that might bring you a lot of joy, because you are afraid people will laugh at you? I used to not try new things because I was afraid of people’s laughter, of people’s judgement and of my own for not being perfect straight away. Ultimately, we are the ones who lose out. So, let’s change this attitude we have. On today’s episode I talk about how we can stop being so hard on ourselves. Caption : When Nic Marchesi launched @orangeskyau with his best mate, the idea was to help restore dignity to people experiencing homelessness by providing a free laundry service. What they didn’t plan on is that while the people were having their clothes washed, there was a chance to have a chat and connect with those people, and at that moment they were providing something far more valuable than clean clothes. Nic is a brilliant human being and taught me a lot. As we go through the conversation you’ll hear he never refers to a ‘client’, they’re always ‘ one of our friends’ and then gives them a name. It’s a deliberate and beautifully humanising move that shifted for me how much we can ignore the person and instead focus on the problem especially when it comes to those who are sleeping rough. It’s a wonderful story, and I know you’re going to think very differently about people experiencing homelessness by the time we’re through.
