Every Malayalee reading this will have their own family recipe for Kadala Curry . Incase if you dont, here is mine.
Bengal gram : 1/2cup soak overnight
Coconut oil
Dry red chilli 8-10
Fennel seed : 1tbsp
Cumin : 1/2tsp
Pepper corns : 1tsp
Shallots : 5-7
Ginger : 1 piece
Garlic : 8-10
Curry leaf : hand full
Coconut : 1/2 cup
Coriander powder : 1tbsp
Tomato : 2 small
Turmeric
Salt

Method:
Heat 1 tsp of coconut oil and roast red chillies, fennel, ginger, garlic, shallots , cumin and pepper. Once roasted keep that aside. On the same pan add coconut and curry leaves. Once the coconut turns brown and 1 tablespoon of coriander powder and cook for a minute and switch off the flame. Grind all of these together . Add two tomatoes to the soaked gram with enough water and add the ground paste . Season it with salt and cover the cooker and cook for 6 whistles. For the final tempering, heat coconut oil, add mustard seeds and red chillies once that starts to splatter add chopped shallots and fry tjem until they are golden brown. Finally add curry leaves and pour it into the gravy.

Ps: you Puttu will more softer if you pulse it for a minute in the mixer.

Cooking time : 60 minutes
Serves 2-3

Ingredients
Chicken : 500g
Jeerakashala rice : 3 cups
Coconut oil : 3 tablespoons
Ghee : 2 tablespoons
Cinnamon : 3 medium size pieces
Cardamom: 3-4
Cloves: 3-4
Star anise : 1
Stone flower : 1-2
Fennel: 1 teaspoon
Whole red chillies: 10-12
Onion : 2 large onions medium sliced
Ginger garlic paste : 1 tablespoon
Tomato : 2
Salt : as per taste
Curd : 3 tablespoons
handful of mint leaves
Water : 4.5 cups ( rice to water ratio is 1:1.5)

Method:
1. Soak whole red chillies in hot water
2. Wash rice and drain out all the water and keep aside
3. Marinate the chicken in curd and let that rest
4. Heat a heavy bottom pot or cooker and add oil along with ghee
5. Add in the whole spices (cinnamon cardamom cloves fennel and stone flower)
6. Add sliced onion and let that brown for a while
7. Add ginger garlic paste and sauté
8. Grind the soaked red chillies with little water and add the paste and cook until the oil separates
9. Add tomatoes and cook until mushy
10. Add chicken and season with salt
11. Cover and cook for 10mnts untill the chicken releases all the water
12. Once the chicken is 90% cooked add a hand full of mint leaves
13. Add hot water and rice
14. Cover and cook for another 10 mnts in medium flame
15.Cover the pot with a aluminium foil and place it on a hot tawa
16. Keep something heavy on the top and cook for 15 mnts in low heat
17. Switch off the flame and let that sit for another 15 mnts
18. Open the cooker , mix well and add a spoon of ghee (which is optional)
19. Dig in 😋

From loosing her beloved husband , son and all of her siblings to witnessing the separation of my parents!! Oh she had gone through alot but you will only see her smiling and cracking jokes.
There was a point in her life where she had the opportunity to have a luxurious life in Dubai with her daughter but she chose not to go only because I will be alone here . She was my companion throughout my youth festival days and she was the most important person who nurtured the artist in me. Thank you for everything ammama. We will miss youu. Ummmmaaa

When amma was taken to the hospital, I texted @sailo_r_ahul to come and he was there in no time. Just like me he was also shocked and clueless. I couldn’t even stand there watching what was happening but Rahul sat next to amma as she closed her eyes forever in his hands.
Then came @ima.shnookums , who took care of the people who were coming home serving them tea coffee, making me eat food, cleaning the house, getting me medicines, making me drink water and more.
When I decided to take amma to the hospital the first call was made to @menon_rahul and he took care of things when I couldn’t even process what was happening.
When Nandini Aunty came and hugged me not letting me see what was happening I absolutely felt amma’s presence 💔
Am sure amma wanted Malini achema to be with her on her final days taking care of amma , cracking jokes and making her laugh. Amma had her last coffee which Malini achema made💔 @sreekumarmalini
When Raji Aunty came, she told me somthing that amma would definitely like. She said, she will bring Theertham from temple. And we gave that theertham to amma which would have made amma reaaalllyy happy. Thank you @raji_rajumenon for understanding amma soo well♥️

Ennai Kathirikkai

For the masala

Gingelly oil - 1 tablespoon
Red chilli - 10-12
Cumin - 1 teaspoon
Pepper- 1 teaspoon
White sesame seeds - 1 teaspoon
Coriander powder - 1 tablespoon
Onion - 1 medium
Coconut grated - 3 tablespoons

For the tempering

Gingelly oil - 5-6 tablespoons
Mustard - 1/2 teaspoon
Cumin - 1/2 teaspoon
Red chilli- 1
Asafoetida 1 teaspoon
Shallots - 10
Garlic - 10
Brinjal ( small) - 5-6
Tamarind - 1 small lemon sized soaked in 1 cup water
Turmeric 1 pinch
Salt

Method:
Roast all the ingredients for the masala paste in 1 tablespoon of oil. And grind it into a fine paste.
Heat another pan, add 5-6 tablespoons of oil , add all the tempering ingredients and add the eggplants. Sauté in high flame for 5 mnts and add the tamarind extract. Let that boil for 2 mnts and add the ground masala and cover the pan , let that cook for 10 mnts. Open the lid check for seasoning and add salt. Cook for another 10 mnts or untill you see the oil separates

Ennai Kathirikkai For the masala Gingelly oil – 1 tablespoon Red chilli – 10-12 Cumin – 1 teaspoon Pepper- 1 teaspoon White sesame seeds – 1 teaspoon Coriander powder – 1 tablespoon Onion – 1 medium Coconut grated – 3 tablespoons For the tempering Gingelly oil – 5-6 tablespoons Mustard – 1/2 teaspoon Cumin – 1/2 teaspoon Red chilli- 1 Asafoetida 1 teaspoon Shallots – 10 Garlic – 10 Brinjal ( small) – 5-6 Tamarind – 1 small lemon sized soaked in 1 cup water Turmeric 1 pinch Salt Method: Roast all the ingredients for the masala paste in 1 tablespoon of oil. And grind it into a fine paste. Heat another pan, add 5-6 tablespoons of oil , add all the tempering ingredients and add the eggplants. Sauté in high flame for 5 mnts and add the tamarind extract. Let that boil for 2 mnts and add the ground masala and cover the pan , let that cook for 10 mnts. Open the lid check for seasoning and add salt. Cook for another 10 mnts or untill you see the oil separates
