Rankin Instagram - At the start of my career, I was seduced by fashion; I loved it. My memory of that time is incredibly nostalgic now. Back in those days, when we were just starting out at @Dazed I can remember how ambitious we were, even with so little money. In all honesty, I don’t think that either of us really thought that the magazine would last more than a few months, or years at most. So to see what it has become is actually very inspiring and extraordinary.

Rankin Instagram - Starting @Dazed, none of us had ever done a magazine before. We were all pretty new to it, and our energy was optimistic, excited, and very DIY.
The ‘Back in the Dazed’ show has reminded me of what it was like back then, when everything felt possible. I feel incredibly lucky to have worked with that group of people at that time. It’s funny to think that back then we were all just a bunch of kids, making it up as we went along.

Judging the Abbey Road Music Photography Awards, with this incredible bunch.

Thank you so much to this fantastic panel of judges (Plus Raven and David on line), the brilliant entries (22,000 this year) and of course everyone at Abbey Road. It’s such a thrill and an honour to be part of this competition, to get to see the fab entries, which just keep getting better. Plus to do something that is so celebratory.

However, musicians seem to have that instinct already built in. Whether it’s because they bare their souls through their music or are used to being on stage, they possess an openness that invites exploration. A musician will always come ready to play. Rankin - 1.9K Likes - Björk was the first serious musical artist that I photographed. We’d been doing @Dazed & Confused for only three or four issues when we got the call from her record company, saying that she would like me to do a press session. This was my first proper session, so I was seriously nervous. As a way to protect myself, I took Björk to St. Albans Road, where I’d spent my teenage years — a place where I knew all of the locations inside out.

Björk was, thankfully, a gracious collaborator and guided me through my first proper commissioned session. She made me realize that I should always follow my own instincts and not be derivative. Fittingly, it is my images of @Bjork that have become some of my most iconic works, and which have set the blueprint for many of my shoots to come.
