Rick Springfield Instagram - My long time friend, cohort, passionate musician, loving crazy boy, fiery drummer, and deep soul Jack White has left us. He passed away last night surrounded by his beautiful family. Barbara and I visited JDub (as he was known to us) in his hospice bed on the 4th of this month. He was on all the drugs you are allowed to take on your way out and was thankfully feeling no pain. He was funny and loving and we talked for over two hours. It was such a great conversation and Jack was the driving force, still. He played drums in my band for different stretches between 1976 and 2002, and was responsible three different times for me getting back out on the road. He’d say “Come on man! Let’s put a band together!” Among his many famous lines was “I hit things for a living.” A complex man, damaged, ferocious, cantankerous, loving, and above all, a good good soul. God speed sweet JDub. I will miss you and know that your life left its mark on me, in a good way. 😃 You are the man. ❤️ Love forever “Springer”

Rick Springfield Instagram - It’s the 50th anniversary today of my super-light pop soundtrack from Mission Magic. The Mission Magic cartoon series was originally conceived when ABC went to all the teen magazines in 1973 and asked them who they thought would be the next “David Cassidy”. Apparently they all said Rick Springfield. 😬 So they came to me with this idea for a cartoon show featuring me and a concept of it being like Yellow Submarine and Fantasia mixed together. We actually had a meeting with some of the head Disney artists from Fantasia. Lord of the Rings was tossed in too as story possibilities. By the time the whole concept got filtered through the ABC exec machine it ended up a silly xerox-art copy of every other kids show on at the time. I wrote a song for every episode and the subject matter was so light and the time frame so short that they ended up not so great songs. At a party a few years ago Quentin Tarantino said to me “I loved Mission Magic when I was a kid!” So could Mission Magic have inspired some of Quentin’s amazing future work? Ahhhh, no. But it might have twisted his 8 year old mind a bit. 🤣 I’m rather embarrassed by the show now, but it’s part of my life and I accept that. It has a certain “Gilligan’s Island” pastiche but let’s not repeat it, okay? 😉

The Mission Magic cartoon series was originally conceived when ABC went to all the teen magazines in 1973 and asked them who they thought would be the next “David Cassidy”. Apparently they all said Rick Springfield. 😬 So they came to me with this idea for a cartoon show featuring me and a concept of it being like Yellow Submarine and Fantasia mixed together. We actually had a meeting with some of the head Disney artists from Fantasia. Lord of the Rings was tossed in too as story possibilities. By the time the whole concept got filtered through the ABC exec machine it ended up a silly xerox-art copy of every other kids show on at the time. I wrote a song for every episode and the subject matter was so light and the time frame so short that they ended up not so great songs. At a party a few years ago Quentin Tarantino said to me “I loved Mission Magic when I was a kid!” So could Mission Magic have inspired some of Quentin’s amazing future work? Ahhhh, no. But it might have twisted his 8 year old mind a bit. 🤣 I’m rather embarrassed by the show now, but it’s part of my life and I accept that. It has a certain “Gilligan’s Island” pastiche but let’s not repeat it, okay? 😉
