Riz Ahmed Instagram - When you spend your life code switching you learn to never bring all of your raw, unfiltered self to the table. But this film was just that - our families and fears, the music and the message, Urdu and English - holding nothing back. Winning an Oscar for THIS film of all films? It’s a lesson to make the thing you think you shouldn’t. Also, Oscar’s are seriously heavy. Carrying one for 12 hours feels like your shoulder is dislocating. And maybe that was a lesson too - that the weight you carry is the reward, the pain is the poetry, your gift and curse are the same. Confront your adversity, embrace it, and share it - it will elevate you. That’s what we did with this film. We put our nightmares on screen and they turned into a dream. Thank you God for teaching me. Tough week shooting The Night Of. He’s told he has afternoon off, but not me. End of day in my trailer I see he’s spent his time off buying me the nicest & prob still most expensive jacket I own. Just to give me a boost & show love. Another time I go to his apartment to rehearse. I’m analysing the hell out of the scenes. He tells me “stop thinking about it, try dreaming about it”. Riz Ahmed Instagram - We are so proud at Left Handed Films to be a part of @joylandmovie. Our motto is “go left” and Saim Sadiq’s unique film does just that. JOYLAND is ground-breaking. And it's easy to get lost in all the ways that it is; the first Pakistani film at Cannes, the first award-winner, the first to be Oscar®️ shortlisted, and a queer love story that has overcome multiple bans. But more important than any of the glass ceilings it smashes, is how this film so masterfully breaks our hearts. Saim Sadiq’s filmmaking is both understated and gut-wrenching. His writing is consistently unexpected, and every scene is so elegantly composed but still bursting with raw performances. JOYLAND is one of the best films of the year, and against all odds of resources and marketing budgets, it's been amazing to see festival juries, audiences, and critics shouting that from the rooftops.
