Rob Delaney Instagram - Today would’ve been my dad Bob’s 75th birthday. He died last October of leukemia. I love him and I miss him and I still talk to him from time to time. Here’s a picture of him holding my son Henry, who died in 2018. My dad took very good care of Henry and his brothers too. I am so grateful I could care for my dad over the 2 years he was sick. Rob Delaney Instagram - 6 years ago today the little guy looking at us from the box was getting ready to die. He had a little less than a week left. I’ve wanted to say that - since writing the book about Henry - the volume of letters and messages I’ve gotten from other bereaved parents and siblings is completely unbelievable. It feels very strange to not be able to reply to all of them. One, there are only so many hours in the day and I have alive children and an alive wife to spend time with. And two, meaningfully engaging with the massive emotions surrounding children’s deaths all the time would probably kill me. But I want to say hello to all the bereaved parents and siblings who have written me and say that I love you. And doesn’t it feel good and right to write about your dead child? To say their name? To see it written down and send it off to someone else? To parent your child in some way, even though their body is gone? You love them. And they love you. Finally, I wrote a book about grief but it didn’t make me an expert. Just another meatball trudging along, making between 8-12 mistakes each day.

Rob Delaney Instagram - Just marked the 5th anniversary of this beautiful boy’s death. Our son Henry. Half his face is paralyzed due to nerve damage from his brain tumor. I liked having two types of cheek to kiss on one face. One chunky and one super chunky. Anniversaries are very difficult. I’ve been angry and no fun to be around lately. Trying to feel all the feelings and let them move through me without being an asshole to Henry’s mum and brothers. Mixed results. We have many wonderful times too, of tenderness and closeness. Maybe that’s what a family is. Probably? I don’t know. I know that Henry remains a part of our family and I love him and miss him to the point of pain. Henry’s older brother just brought me a cookie while I was typing this. A Thin Mint, which is a type of Girl Scout cookie we brought back from America.

If you zoom in you can see it’s because there’s a big nest there the crew spared. I remember being so upset when the London planes on our street were pollarded (MEGA-pruned) the first year we lived here. Caption : As of today I have been sober for 22 years! How insane is that? 22 years ago I was in jail in a wheelchair. I’d driven my car into a building in a blackout. Thank God the only person who got hurt was me. I’d been struggling with alcohol for years and when the accident illustrated that that my drinking could easily hurt or kill others – not just me – I decided to get the help I needed to stop. I was court ordered to rehab for a month and then a sober living halfway house after that. Could’ve done a shorter period of time in jail but I knew rehab was where I belonged. I’ve heard the 12 Steps described as “an assembly line for a spiritual experience” and I’ve found that accurate. They gave me the framework to stop drinking and stay stopped. 2 years into sobriety I met my #sexy wife and we’ve been together since. 5 yrs into sobriety I mustered the courage to pursue my dream career. We’ve had 4 sons we’re crazy about. Our 3rd son Henry, died of cancer 6 years ago. I didn’t drink or get high & as a result I remained of use to my family and my coworkers, all the while feeling the grief and anger and wonder and gratitude. I want to thank the army of people who’ve helped me along the way. I feel a lot of love right now.
