Caption : @lancemountain dropped by the other day so we could put some finishing touches on a little project he’s been cookin’ up. After hanging out, he asked to grab a photo together before it hits. But it’s Lance! So, it’s been 10 months since I learned to walk again; doc ok’d me to roll after only a few months, but given they screwed metal into the hollow of both femurs, a hard landing could split ‘em– like chisels. I’ve been rolling on eggshells too long, so I asked if he’d mind me trying a trick I hadn’t done in years. Man it felt right as soon as I spun a few, so I threw my feet on the 4th one. Then within 5-10min, this just flowed… The Respect I have for Lance is what it took to do it then & there. Ever since it’s like a switch went on: I can SKATE. It’s a joy rooted in your very being. Every skater knows it— and it never goes away <3Likes : 82572

Caption : Last October I posted shots of @electricmudofficial . They’re like family to me, so when they asked for another to promote a show for the CK4 Foundation at San Diego’s Music Box, I didn’t even ask what it stood for—I just shot a quick trick. They said the foundation helps SEALs and their families, but it didn’t connect until I watched the video: CK4 stands for Charles Keating IV, the American Hero that my friend called ͞Chucky͟ in his email, reeling at his loss after the firefight which could’ve easily taken both their lives. Over the last 10 years, the handful of SEALs I know have turned out to be the people I admire most, who stand up and ask for the hardest, most dangerous missions when our leadership calls for war—from the left or right, whether right or wrong. At least one of these will be on onstage on Aug 11th; show starts at 6pm, if you get the time. You never know who you’re standing next to, in that crowd.Likes : 76454

Caption : Blows me away how only a handful of generations have brought skating to where it is today. While some made marks in bursts (Mike Smith!), a rare few have been lifting it higher from ball-bearing days to now, not only by their skating, but through their character, art, brands, mags, and more; each imbues a spirit and extends our reach by not just what we do, but who we are. In this light, I don’t think anyone has given more than @tonyhawk, who’s done it all, yet never stops. An injury could’ve ended him last year, yet that spirit of his had him flying before his body was ready, landing Tony right back in surgery. Now, to see him killing it again…!! Til the wheels fall off. Here’s a fun podcast with Tony & Jason Ellis last year. Crazy how bonds only grow stronger with time. https://podcasts.apple.com/ee/podcast/rodney-mullen/id1553164725?i=1000545494324Likes : 60887

Caption : Last Thursday, @mid90smovie premiered at the courthouse. It felt natural and open with legit skaters cruising around, plus food trucks and a screen in front of rows of folding chairs. Plenty of staples from the community there: Jacob Rosenberg, whom Mike T raised up filming Plan B, sat in front of me—roots and talent, in spades. He and everyone I spoke to basically said the same: There is a raw purity to Mid90s. Nothing feels forced; it weaves a story with legit skaters, just being themselves. It’s not my story, yet it captures an essence of not only mine, but so many dudes I’ve known over the years. I see movie critics approve, only it’s insane how they miss the point: like someone alien to you describing your hometown—or family—by seeing a picture. Which bats home the rarity and uniqueness of the belonging we find in skateboarding, by being who we are, doing what we do. I’m grateful someone of Jonah’s caliber not only gets it but used such skills to create this and put it out there—for all of us.Likes : 55022

Caption : Ben Harper asked me if I’d like to film a couple of tricks for Gracias L.A. a few weeks ago, and of all people, I wanted to give him a trick that had something to it and meant a lot to me. I haven’t been in front of a camera or even really skated with anyone for years, but I finally felt like I had something worthwhile to give. While the first few tricks just show normal stuff in my regular stance, the last one has been on my mind for a while. I made it for the first time, only the day before, and it looked ROTTEN– so sketchy and uneasy. All I wanted was to get a clean one for Ben that night. While it’s still not what it could be, it represents a starting point of something new I can work with– which came at a pretty high price. Funny, though Tony has been such a close friend for all these years, I still get kinda shy about reaching out to see what he thinks when I’ve got something going on– he IS @tonyhawk , ya know– so I sent it to him, genuinely hoping he’d give me some input. Right away, he asked if he could post it, and it seriously meant so much to me. I hope you enjoy this, and I’ll try to keep you posted with some new stuff as I build momentum again. Caption : So many times, I’ve been on the road with skaters I admire most, laughing and reminiscing about earlier days when skating felt fresh and free— just skating with friends. Yet the necessary flipside to that is just as true: some of my best days were during Round II, calling Daewon after landing some table trick that I never thought I’d get, or calling Mike T after Jake Rosenberg and I got that Balboa Darkslide for Virtual. Whether for Bones Brigade, Plan B, Globe or Almost, much of what drove me was to earn the respect of the dudes I admired most. To this day, some of my deepest bonds and best memories came of it. That in mind, I’m honored to welcome @austyngillette to @globebrand_skateboarding! I’m looking forward to all you’ll bring. https://us.globebrand.com/pages/skateboardingLikes : 47836

Caption : In 2005, a biography (The Mutt) came out, which captures a kind of arc that runs parallel to some friends that I’d like to introduce over a series of half-dozen posts—there is a pattern worth sharing. Starting where the book begins: As early as I could remember, I had to sleep with boots tied at the heels, which forced my pigeon-toed feet into a “V.” Doctors prescribed this to try to pry them from their natural state, aimed at each other. I walked like a drunken chimp, tripping myself constantly. My father… not exactly proud. For years I rarely left my room, so fixated on Erector Sets (pre-Legos) that my mom just left meals at the door. Then I got a skateboard. All those endless hours of fitting “Legos” together translated into piecing-together movements, learning tricks. I found my balance and taught myself how to learn. Everything I have, came from skateboarding. I can’t imagine what I’d be without it.Likes : 45255

Caption : Part 2: @benharper continues to play and produce, touring over half the year. Yet from Carnegie Hall to the Sydney Opera House, Ben will disappear between tour busses or wander into the night to work on some new trick. Around 2009, he sent a clip of his first kickflip, eventually progressing to laser’s a few years ago. Then, suddenly it stopped. Knowing one another well, I left it alone as the question hung in the air. Finally, he showed me how his vertebra had fused, wrestling with the idea of surgery—yearning to skate. That was about 1 year ago, when he went under the knife. After inserting this contraption in the base of his spine, he told me he’d pick up where he left off. And man did he. Check out this stationary laser, which to me is that much harder without being able to get behind it… In the words of Lance Mountain: “Skateboarding doesn’t make you a skateboarder: not being able to stop skateboarding makes you a skateboarder.”Likes : 44576

Caption : Chris Haslam embodies what makes skating an art more than it will ever be a sport. His skating speaks volumes about who he is in ways that are obvious to anyone who knows him. Beyond that, his creativity and control have etched his place among the best skaters of any generation. No matter what the terrain, he finds something new for it, spending the last decade and a half as a nomad seeking out places to see his ideas through, not for the sake of being different or trying to stand out, but for the unvarnished compulsion to do things his own way and push into the unknown. That’s who he is as a person; he does it for the sake of doing it, nothing more—one of the truest skaters I know. This came out a month or so ago, in case you haven’t seen his newest part. https://bit.ly/2GbWwbfLikes : 44475

Caption : When we watch certain skaters, we get a glimpse of who they are. In a real way, the essence of our community is composed of bits from everyone who contributes because we give of ourselves through what we do. This is central to who I am and why, for me, the business of it has to be kept separate. Over 30 years, my affiliations with companies—even my own—have changed many times; my loyalty is to skateboarding and the friendships forged through our mutual striving—not businesses. Friends are friends, regardless of who they skate for. Today, I’ve been with Globe longer than any other company for many reasons, primarily because of who they are as people combined with their dedication to skateboarding and those of us who’ve lived-it for most of our lives. They have, too. I’m grateful for their help in building this new shoe; it’s the one that works best for what I do. https://bit.ly/2Tce4GnLikes : 43712

Caption : I don’t think anyone has given more to skateboarding than Tony Hawk. We were both on Bones Brigade as kids, so I’ve witnessed the insane tempo of his progression up-close since I was 14. While we shared many experiences, Tony’s flown to heights that none of us have reached; all the while, he’s remained the same—humble and loyal to his friends. Some 20 years ago, he nonchalantly asked me to be in his game (THPS2) while finishing lunch at CA Pizza Kitchen. I never would’ve imagined the impact it would make. A couple years ago I heard murmurs of a secret project; next thing I knew, Tony brought us back together. Man, just seeing Kareem again… Then Muska, Bob, Elisa, Rowley—EVERYONE. What an honor it’s been to be part of this, for all these years. Oh yeah, plus the new @tonyhawkthegame is INSANE!!Likes : 40887

Caption : Of the most humbling honors skating has bestowed is being chosen to be someone’s Make-A-Wish. Of the dozen or so I’ve experienced—through various foundations—it’s always the same: During the days prior, I toss & turn at night, having no idea what to say to a dying child reaching out in his (almost assuredly) final days of life. I’ve just lived my life as a skater—nothing more. Which I’m terrified they will quickly find out, and then maybe end up worse-off than before. This is the first time it was for an adult; his name was David. By the time he’d gotten word that he only had a few months to live, it was too late to even bother with formal channels. Yet through his brother’s determination combined with more than one coincidence, we arranged to meet in a coffee shop on September 7th near(ish) his home in DC. As his wife, Dee, wheeled David to our table, we caught sight of one another; a long minute later, we sat in silence with eyes glassed-over. Suddenly, he spoke with a grinning frustration: “Do you know how many hours I spent, working on kickflips?” This ignited a lightness, laughing at all the shinners and struggles of learning the same basic tricks. Which led to sharing the nuanced gifts of some of my peers (Hensley!) that makes them seemingly superhuman, while connecting to the funny quirks that makes them real and so truly Human. Then came streams of the perfectly mundane that eddied and flowed, as if sweeping us into a river of all the shared little peculiarities that connect us not just as skaters, but as people.Likes : 40498

Caption : If you’re a fan of the Tony’s THPS series, Pretending I’m a Superman is fun and insightful to watch. The main producer from Neversoft, Ralph D’Amato, hit me up years ago for a couple of interviews with an uber-talented Swedish director, Ludvig Gür to talk about skating and the game back then; together, they’ve woven the stories from all of us (skaters) as well as Bad Religion (& more bands), plus influential dudes in the videogame world to form a cool mosaic of its impact on culture as a whole. For as much as skating has been my life, it was crazy to see its influence from such different angles; it left me with a sense of connection that I wouldn’t have otherwise known. Beyond even that, it gives a fresh light to the ways Tony Hawk has made skateboarding better for us all. #pretendingimasuperman #thpsfilm #thps @thpsfilm link in bioLikes : 38570

Caption : Einstein said, “Imagination is more important than knowledge,” and this little book, Pragmatic Imagination, explains how to put that to work through the lens of science, architecture, jazz, writing, and most importantly, skateboarding. OK, it doesn’t mention skating, but it articulates the relationship between creativity & imagination as we adapt tricks to the world around us in a way that never dawned upon me. Beyond that, it adds a mind-blowing scope and detail to the same creative outlooks that have reshaped the world across every field—often, with a kind of diagrammatic prose. And for good reason: the authors, Ann Pendleton Jullian and John Seely Brown, are some of the greatest minds of our era. By some kind of miracle, I was paired with JSB last May at MIT to share perspectives; we’ll visit Stanford in a few weeks to do the same. Caption : Tony ( @TonyHawk ) reached out recently to shoot something together for his new video, which is nearly all doubles with some of the best dudes ever– so it was doubly an honor, in a way. We settled on doing Airwalks, because all those years ago, I watched him do it in a pool and wanted to steal it for myself… Only problem was, I couldn’t skate vert, so I started doing ’em on flat and trying to add to ’em. The next thing I knew, Tony started throwing fingerflips into his, which at the time was an unbelievable leap forward for skateboarding, and blew Stacy away. Anyway, those tricks represent a kind of mutual influence we’ve always had together. Tony has been one of the biggest inspirations I’ve ever known, and continues to be. Caption : What drew me to skating only grew stronger by going after it with all I had. Somehow I knew that, even as a kid. Decades later, it’s given me more than I ever dreamed and made me who I am. Doing what we love nurtures and hones whatever called us to it, in the first place. I see this in the friends I admire most, in whatever they do. Many are skaters, some hackers, yet for whatever reason, a few are SEALs. More skate than you might think; one was Charlie Keating, who was killed by doing what he was called to do today, seven years ago. I never knew him, though his family has become like family, some of the noblest people I know. Their pain and loss have refined that nobility through helping their community manage the crazy toll that path takes, which benefits us all. Caption : One of the most meaningful parts of skating has been the friendships along the way: Tony, Daewon, Jamie, Lance, Kareem, Has, MJ… So many. Knowing them, you see the nuanced ways their skating is an expression of who they are, which gets woven into fabric of the community itself, by both their contribution and standing. In this sense—and more—skating is more of an art than a sport. And this extends even beyond: Legit skaters like Jean, Bret Johnston, Ben Harper, Dhani, Stacy, Spike, Mark Gonzales, Jason Lee, Shawn Gladwell and Jonah Hill are just a handful of examples of the broader impact skaters make, particularly in the arts. Man, I don’t even know how old you were– maybe 14, or even younger.. However long ago it was, one thing was clear, that you were gonna be AMAZING. And to think, all these years later, not only would you become one of the greatest skaters ever, but that I would have the privilege of being so close to it over the years, to watch it unfold and see the grace with which you handle it all. You are THE BEST, Daewon! See you in a couple of weeks. -RodneyLikes : 25421

Caption : Charlie Keating was one of about 14 more SEALs sent in to help; together, these 25-30 SEALS vanquished the ISIS fighters in a firefight that lasted for hours. Praising the one American casualty, spokesman for the Command, Col Warren, called Charlie Keating an American Hero… Words like Heroare bandied about so much that they lose meaning; movies riddle us with stories and images which… Generally, are far from it. And yet heroes quietly walk amongst us, sometimes closer than we may realize. A 30min video on www.ChuckHeavy.org paints out the life, character, and family of a real-life hero. Charlie grew up skating, surfing, and goofing around like any of us—seemingly always laughing. Only driven by conviction, he chose a different path because, “It was the hardest thing to do.” The final song from Matt Hensley’s band is just another of the threads that binds him to our community, too.Likes : 24682

Caption : My visceral reaction when I hear someone is making a movie about skating is… I wish they wouldn’t. Call it cynical or too close to home— just call it experience: They all pretty much suck, wrecked by people who don’t get it from the start, then pump it out for mass consumption and leave us stuck with the perception. For those who’ve spent their lives skating—living it—it’s hard not to take that personal. I’m no different. So, when I heard @jonahhill was making a movie about skating a few years ago, I didn’t know what to think. For all his talent and success, I never knew him to be a skater and had no sense of his motive, so an ambivalence took hold. Soon enough we crossed paths, and I witnessed for myself. Somehow Jonah’s movie success seemed to yield clarity on what skating gave him from the start. He’s says it straight here: http://enewspaper.latimes.com/infinity/article_share.aspx… Jonah never claimed to even be a decent skater; rather, he lit up talking about skating and hanging out at the (West LA) courthouse as a kid. It seemed as if he wanted to pay a tribute to skateboarding. Then, one of today’s highest-paid actors, described pros of that era with a respect boarding on awe. In a fit of genuine reverie, Jonah began rifling off clips from 20-Shot Sequence I’d nearly forgotten, mentioning nuances that legit skaters would note, yet still expressed in slang of that day. When he talked about how much Kareem’s company, Menace, affected him and contextualized it with the music of the era, it only validated his sincerity and perspective. Not long ago, the trailer came out, which shows where he’s coming from—it opens nationwide Friday, Oct 26th. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Igfhy3Q5CeILikes : 22969

Caption : A Navy SEAL was killed on May 3rd, 2016, which caught my eye on the news. Having such a friend deployed in Iraq, I scoured for his name. The next night I was relieved to get an email… He was OK, only with HARROWING details: They were awoken at 5:30am with orders to aid friendly fighterswhose line had been “breached” by ISIS near a Christian village, north of Mosul. Approaching the scene, waves of those friendlies were fleeing straight into them. Suddenly, a vehicle packed with explosives wheeled around the corner; the HUGE blast halted their small convoy in its tracks, forcing them to fight in place. That’s when they realized it wasn’t just a breach: ISIS had taken theENTIRE village. Suddenly RPG’s and mortars thundered down while a hail of bullets left them with nowhere to hide. Reinforcements were called as these 15 SEALs were left to fend off over 125 ISIS fighters streaming out against them.Likes : 21960

Presently, they’re on display again until May 25th at Francis M. Naumann Fine Art (24 W 57th St), if you happen to live nearby. http://www.francisnaumann.com/EXHIBITIONS/Sam.htmlLikes : 21138

Caption : Maybe six years ago, Ben (Harper) told me about @dhaniharrison ‘s idea of shooting in Steven Sebring’s rig, then introduced us. From that initial meeting to the final scoring of Liminal, working so closely together gave me the opportunity to see Dhani’s rare gifts on display and cemented a strong bond. What’s so distinctive about Dhani’s artistic approach is his technical aptitude. Yet his degree in physics & design (Brown U) only scratches the surface. What undergirds and supercharges that is something so much more: Growing up surrounded by many of the most luminous minds of Rock & Roll—Dhani’s natural talent was imprinted with an oddly preternatural musical scope and acumen. There is a synergy to it all that factors into his genius. Yet for as magnetic as his Dhani is with such a loaded background and learning, it’s his genuine character and grinningly impish spirit along with the decades of shared history through skating that makes the friendship seem life-long. Though the Bones Brigade doc touches upon it, you see it from his Rip City cap to his study, being lined with boards going all the way back to the 1980’s: OG Hawk & McGill decks ‘fully decked out with Cubics & Trackers—on to the present. From music to snowboarding to the inner workings of atoms and stars, she threw herself into it. Armed with a brilliant mind, she earned a physics degree from MIT in 2011. Faced with the decisions of narrowing focus to work in a lab, she wrestled with having to confine the very curiosity that got her there. As an outlet, she started making science videos while working as an app developer at GE, earning top prize at SUNY Stony Brook. Soon, Scientific American took note, and PBS came knocking. A friend connected us (YEAH Chris!), and we shot an episode recently for her channel, @thephysicsgirl. Dianna’s grinning, self-effacing humility makes these videos a treat. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yFRPhi0jhGcLikes : 18770

Caption : This is one of my closest friends, Bret Anthony Johnston. Bret was on his way to turning pro, only broke his foot on tour, so ended up pursuing his writing. Within a matter of years, he became the Director of Creative Writing at Harvard, sharing offices (here) with some of the most influential writers and poets in the world. One of them once alluded to his skating—in light of his success—as “misspent years.” Bret quietly took what was meant as a compliment, yet confided later that it was his skating that created the foundation for his success. To this day, Bret skates religiously at least a few times a week, when he’s not on tour or on one of his hushed, Illuminati-sounding getaways. If you get the chance, check out his book, which is an int’l best seller: Remember Me Like This. We printed special boards to help advertise it, as it has glimpses of his own childhood, skating in Corpus Christi.Likes : 18245

Caption : There is no single skater that has ever made me feel more honored to have any association with— much less the bond we have— than @daewon1song . Even as a kid, his ninja skills were obvious; I put him on World right from the beginning, about 27 years ago. That only fueled his progress and creativity, which are still unfolding to this day, etching an indelible mark in our shared history, written through his skating, and illuminated through his character—because of who he is. Hardly have I ever met someone more creative, driven, humble, devoted—and most of all, a loyal friend– which has been tested and found truer than I’ve ever known, nearly 30 years later. I can’t express the honor I felt to introduce Daewon last Friday night at his Hall of Fame induction.Likes : 16955

Spike, Jonah Hill, and Scott Cooper are just a few in film: plenty in tech, and probably even more of musicians. Ben Harper is singular, even in this group: He’s got 3 Grammy’s and fills venues like Carnegie Hall and the Sydney Opera House; meanwhile, he skates nearly every day, with some of the meanest laser flips and nollie (outward) varial-heels around. Bret Johnston is another: a Harvard professor who’s seemingly always up for int’l awards, he walks with kings. Presently in Iceland, he’s giving private readings to their President. Here’s a frontside rock. Just another testimony to the talent and level of influence of our community. (Follow Bret @notoriusbaj22)Likes : 15287

I can’t play a thing but figure the endless hours with a guitar or board, just working out its timing & feel, engrains a kindred language that runs deeper than words— one that brings us together and sets us apart even more. Blows my mind how many amazing musicians are legit skaters, which has given rise to some close friendships: @dhaniharrison is one of ‘em. Recently, he and another friend, @dzonshine, gave me one of the coolest honors I could ever imagine. Maybe check this out if you play guitar. @georgeharrisonofficialLikes : 12465

Though he’s been doing Almost graphics for a while, I’d never had the opportunity to meet him until we shot these together. What struck me most was Jean’s humility and thoughtfulness, which comes out in his work: his simple—loaded—drawings always have some grinning insight with such a grounded honesty. The depth and quality of his work is reflected by the caliber of the outlets that publish it across the globe: The New Yorker, New York Magazine, Tate, Yale, Nike, Pitchfork, The Guardian, The New York Times, BMW, and a host of others. Afterward, I was invited to speak at Wired BizCon, where their Editor-in-Chief, Scott Dadich, blew me away— so sincere and cool. A day later, Scott was to introduce my talk at 1WTC in front of the other editors-in-chief at Conde Nast, chaired by the head of Vogue. As they filed in, nerves started to kick in… Then Scott stepped up for his intro, speaking with such warmth about his own skating days—next thing I knew, everything just flowed. By the time it was done, I’d never had so much fun doing a talk. By the following day, Scott had me hooked up with the president’s office at Conde Nast; ever since, he continues to lift me up wherever he can—such an awesome friend. Scott’s so crazy talented; he walks amongst kings, and now has broadened his role to a whole new realm of projects—this is just one: https://www.wired.com/2017/01/editors-letter-february-2017/Likes : 11219

Caption : Some months ago, I was made a Director’s Fellow at MIT Media Lab, which is known for “inventing the future.” Having spent a couple of months there to get a sense of what they do, what was most special of all was getting to know some of the students doing the work, many of whom are earning their advanced degrees in science—guessing the average age is roughly 25-30. Although the skills they bring are quite different from what we do, the spirit that drives them combined with the pressures at that level forge a Character remarkably similar to what I see in some of the greatest skaters I know, which I think makes some of the friendships so natural. Given this resonance of common striving, I’ve been asked to speak this Friday (18th) at MIT FAIL!If you’re around Boston, I’d love to see you there—good people, all ‘round.Likes : 10287

Caption : Allan Adams specializes in particle physics and string theory at MIT, which is only the tip of the iceberg with this guy. Just to listen to Allan speak about anything is fascinating: He finds connections between things that I’d never see otherwise, plus he does it with lightning speed, expressing it in almost a kind of poesy– all with a kind of lightheartedness and genuine humility. By the time I left, we’d already shaken hands on a couple of ideas, so my guess is we’ll be working together on something in the near future. He has a cool concept of shooting with high speed cameras, which inspires me in a similar way that Dhani and Steven Sebring did. I think it’s the next project I’ll do—already working on tricks for it. Caption : Part 1: @benharper grew up working on every kind of instrument at his grandparent’s music shop, in Claremont. Also designated as a museum, the Folk Music Center surrounded him with artists and musicians of every culture—even some legends. Ben also lived near another Mecca—Pipeline Skatepark—which wielded a kindred influence that never left him; immersed in skating and playing his slide guitar, Ben quickly started cutting out his own path. By the early 90’s, skating took a backseat as he packed venues across the globe, ultimately earning 3 Grammy’s—and still counting. Then for whatever reason, Ben turned back to his skating with a vengeance at the ripe age of 40. That’s about the time we became friends, which has given me a privileged vantage into not only how fast he learns, but to witness the genuine humility and poise with which he comports himself and treats others. A rare dignity, indeed.Likes : 9304

Her podcast “@artofmfg” is a behind-the-scenes look at how entrepreneurs turn ideas into realities. Caption : @birdhouseskateboards latest film, Saturdays, premieres soon. I been privileged to a little preview of @tonyhawk ‘s part, a week or two ago: IT IS INSANE. Tony and I have been friends since I was about 14. Our shared history through Stacy created a strong bond; the Bones Brigade doc captured that well— though the years afterward brought us even closer. Soon, I went to World, while Tony founded Birdhouse, and years passed as Tony continued to build momentum in what seemed a new era, one milestone after the next. By the time he did the 900, it seemed to culminate everything he’d built, and soon Tony reached a level of fame unparalleled in skateboarding. Meanwhile, I’d gradually learned to skate a little street, then busted an ankle after Round II. I guess drawing back to that original connection, I reached out to Tony because I just needed grounding. Funny, I suddenly found myself a little nervous around him after all the changes, thinking somehow, he’d be different. Yet through all his success, Tony was exactly the same, except maybe even more humble—if that’s even possible. In his typical way, Tony just put things in perspective, then out of the blue, asked me to be in his video game. All these years later, our friendship has only continued to grow. Not only is Tony one of the most gifted of all skaters I’ve ever known, his single-minded dedication to the act of skating itself over nearly forty years leaves me in awe, and his part in Saturdays is a testament to that unquenchable fire. http://theberrics.com/saturdays-birdhouse-video-trailer/Likes : 8429

Stacy Peralta did an amazing film that featured him, called Riding Giants—then the Bones Brigade doc… Whatever the reason, it’s an honor. The theme is to show 10 of our Favorite Things. Funny, I’d never thought about it, so as I walked around choosing the stuff I’d grab first if my house caught fire, I realized none of it had anything to do with any kind of award, or really even any real monetary value; rather, nearly all of it is from relationships that have had the most meaning. http://www.wsj.com/articles/rodney-mullens-favorite-things-1484668369Likes : 8146

A particularly well known program of theirs is using VR to help veterans with PTSD. Of the various medals and awards in his office, this shot of his always is most prominent to me. A veteran himself, Randy remains closest to the sacrifices and needs of our soldiers and how that extends through their families, and often follows them home, long after they serve. He and Ann Pendleton-Julian wrote this 2-volume set, Design Unbound. Through a wide range of real-life examples, they integrate philosophy and science to navigate today’s world, because of its hyper connectedness; i.e., they figure we’re better served by looking at it through the lenses of ecology and architecture for fluidly interacting systems, in lieu of old static models. Ann was an MIT professor of architecture having escaped from starting out as an astrophysicist, while JSB began in the fields of complex systems, AI and cognitive science; together, they harmonize with such synergy & insight in these 5 books. JSB and Ann don’t “teach” us; rather, they awesomely lay concepts out for us to learn, even suggesting paths, since the chapters interact differently depending on how you read them. http://www.desunbound.com/chaptersLikes : 7461

A close friend connected us; soon afterwards, we did an interview for the release of Liminal. Though an honor to work with him, it was his heart for skating and straight up character that solidified our friendship. A few weeks ago, Eric and his son took off to Switzerland. Soon afterwards, Ben (Harper) reached out to let me know Eric was in a near fatal motorcycle accident there, then promptly got on a plane to go check on him. Eric is beloved by so many of us in the skate community, not to mention musicians and motorcyclists. We are better off because of his contributions. Since then, we’ve been texting, and you’d never know anything happened—always such an awesome sense of humor. Yet the road to recovery will be a long one. Eric was airlifted by helicopter to a nearby hospital, then placed in an induced coma and breathing ventilator. I think it was the kidney damage and internal bleeding that may have been scariest, along with a badly punctured lung. Surgeons already reconstructed his shoulder with a bunch of plates, while his busted collarbone and shattered clavicle continue to heal. Though his spine was fractured in over a dozen spots, the chord itself seems fine; surgeons left it alone. Aside from a few other fractures and a busted hand, that’s mostly what’s gonna keep him over there until mid-September. Yet all of this comes at an enormous financial cost. If any of this moves you to contribute to his GoFundMe page with anything you may have to spare, know that it’ll be going to some especially good people in need of a helping hand. https://www.gofundme.com/48ajojs?utm_source=internal&utm_medium=email&utm_content=cta_button&utm_campaign=upd_nLikes : 6578

Part of what makes that place so special is their ethos of nurturing new perspectives, a culture of unorthodoxy—a bit rogue, in the best of ways. The closer I get with them, the more they remind me of the skaters I admire most, especially in terms of the Heart it takes to push yourself at those levels while striving after your own ideas, often into the unknown with real risk. Coping with failures takes such a common toll that a group of MIT students & researchers created FAIL! – Inspiring Resilience, where respected peers share their failures. I spoke there last Oct and now, Thursday (7/2) I’ll be back with an MIT Physicist, Allan Adams, at 5pm EDT for an online chat, in case you’d like to join. They don’t talk or debate; rather, when the call comes, they answer it for the rest of us, a sacrifice that often stays with them even when they do make it back. Skaters populate our most elite Special Forces (Thank You, Chris!), NORAD (Yeah Ben!), while others quietly walk amongst us, restarting their lives. Bret’s friend (Jeff) was an Infantry Marine; he used to visualize lines on vert to help center himself on deployments; once home, he started Buzz Bomb Skateboards because, “Skateboarding brought me back to me.” After Bret joined up, I asked if I could be part of a collaboration, with the good word from Almost. For me, nobody’s nod is louder than Tony Hawk’s. We’ve been tight since we were kids, so our closeness & kindred paths only highlight our differences, which makes sharing with Tony funner & more insightful than most anyone I know. For years we’ve considered teaming up to yap in cool venues and delve deep into skating, mishaps, highlights, companies, lessons learned & the bit of madness it takes to live lives doing what we love, whatever the cost. A skater named Shaun Gladwell was invited by the Dean of Yale’s School of Arts in 2007 to show one of his pieces, only to be singled out later by The Daily Telegraph: “If I had to pick the single young artist in this Biennale destined to future greatness, it would be the Australian Shaun Gladwell.” Today, Elton John even collects his work. Some years ago, Shaun reached out to shoot together; although I couldn’t film back then, he patiently encouraged, and we became friends along the way. The first time I’d skated in front of a camera for nearly a decade was for Shaun in the Torrance museum, on some of his favorite art.
