Sarah Polley Instagram - 10 hours waiting in emergency on Christmas night. And counting. It’s minor - but 10 hours is a long time for all the little kids waiting here all night with gashes in their heads and high fevers etc. My littlest keeps saying she’s happy we have this one-on-one time. I am following her lead. We are lucky lucky. We are lucky to have each other, public healthcare, and to live in a peaceful place. But we need to invest more in our hospitals, Ontario. My kid asked me tonight if going to a hospital was like this when I was little. It wasn’t. And I spent a lot of time in this one when I was a kid. What a difference decades of starvation of a system makes. Public healthcare can work when it’s supported. I am rolling this Christmas into Boxing Day in emerg- but thankful she isn’t a serious enough case to be a priority tonight, that we are safe and bombs are not falling here, and also wondering how we can fix this. Because all these kids here tonight - they deserve a lot better.
Sarah Polley Instagram - This beautiful lady Diane died on this day, 34 years ago. So much life and love and energy packed into one person. One of her friends said at her memorial “she believed in the things you hadn’t done yet.” What a rare and beautiful gift. I used to think it was unfair that my mother died when I was only eleven. Now I realize how lucky I was and how unfair it is that every child doesn’t get someone who makes them feel this special, engaged with, loved and wanted for eleven whole years. What a thing to have had. Someone who modelled a love of life even after all she had been through. Lucky lucky are all of us have who had the good fortune to know her, whether it was for decades or a moment.

Sarah Polley Instagram - Nerene Virgin. The first person onscreen who I absolutely idolized. I’d wait with such anticipation for every episode of Todays’s Special. She was pure magic. I got to meet her when I was 8. She did her character’s voice for me. I felt like I was getting an audience with the Pope. She left a big mark on this country and in my heart. I wish this country had provided her with the hundreds of leading roles she deserved. What a mega talent.

I made her laugh by saying “hold still - this is going into the montage for your memorial service. This photo is for when the music hits a crescendo.” Editor that she is- she obliged. How I love this brilliant, fearless, loving woman.

Sarah Polley Instagram - Just found this. The last day of my first feature, Away From Her. Simpler times- when you could mount yer DP while he set up a shot… Shout out to the brilliant @lucmontpellier who has seen me through so many life phases and creative processes - and let me be my silliest self. He is the most fun part of making every film. And has put all of himself into every film and taught me so so much in the process. And occasionally has stayed up until 3am to drive me home from an ER… And behind him there laughing as always - is the one and only Sean Jensen, camera operator extraordinaire. He is more devoted to each project than can possibly be put into words. There are scenes I just wouldn’t try to shoot if he wasn’t behind the lens. And he is a dear friend who has shown up last minute to take one of my kids to school across town in a snowstorm when I was on my own and struggling to get three out the door. I’d be nowhere without these two. And they keep me laughing so hard I cry. Every single day. Such amazing collaborators. Such beautiful friends.❤️

It is based on Alice Munro’s short story “The Bear Came Over the Mountain”, from the 2001 collection Hateship, Friendship, Courtship, Loveship, Marriage. Alice, Sarah, Julie. And a disease that took my father away from us. I met Julie Christie on a film set in Montréal once in the ‘90s and I recall her being very present and yet very remote. Perhaps this is how Alice Munro will feel now, how my father feels. I’m not sure. But I am sure that I am grateful for the work of these amazing women and for the chance to appreciate it with my father. Movies make memories.

Sarah Polley Instagram - So proud of my friend of 34 years (!) @iris.ng.cinematographer who had a retrospective of her work and an award at hotdocs this week! Her strength, deep presence, curiousity, tenacity and wicked sense of humour have been there since I first met her when she was nine. she is a gift to everyone who works with her. So beautiful to get to see someone who never seeks attention get the recognition they so richly deserve. She has such a beautiful body of work. Yay Iris!!! (I almost put a filter on this photo but Iris took it and I’d like to remain friends with her… 🤣)

Caption : Thinking about missing Alice. “Away from Her” is a 2006 Canadian independent drama film written and directed by @realsarahpolley and stars Julie Christie. It is based on Alice Munro’s short story “The Bear Came Over the Mountain”, from the 2001 collection Hateship, Friendship, Courtship, Loveship, Marriage. Alice, Sarah, Julie. And a disease that took my father away from us. I met Julie Christie on a film set in Montréal once in the ‘90s and I recall her being very present and yet very remote. Perhaps this is how Alice Munro will feel now, how my father feels. I’m not sure. But I am sure that I am grateful for the work of these amazing women and for the chance to appreciate it with my father. Movies make memories.

Her strength, deep presence, curiousity, tenacity and wicked sense of humour have been there since I first met her when she was nine. she is a gift to everyone who works with her. So beautiful to get to see someone who never seeks attention get the recognition they so richly deserve. She has such a beautiful body of work. Yay Iris!!!
