Stacey Farber Instagram - My friends left Toronto for dormitories and campus pub crawls, but I stayed. I was bound to a Degrassi contract that wouldnā€™t expire for another year. What I wanted then, at 18, more than any job Iā€™d auditioned for (aside from The O.C. and Juno) was to understand how writers did what they do. The transmission of ideas from writer to reader through the books and scripts Iā€™d read felt paranormal. Howā€”howā€”did a writer build a new world, depict scene, humanize made-up characters, or put language to still-embryonic thought with just 26 letters of the English alphabet and punctuation? I enrolled in the only relevant degree program I knew of that was local and not journalism: the uninspired, blandly-titled, ā€œProfessional Writingā€. Its coursework was fusty, matter of fact and too corporate for undergrads, but it had me look closer at specificities like authorsā€™ ā€œsyntaxā€ and ā€œjargonā€ (i.e. their sentence structure and choice of words), exposing the central magic of writing I liked: voice. I didnā€™t have thatā€”my own voice; not then, not really, not even conversationally, but I longed for one. Stacey Farber Instagram - I flew here in the pandemic on a one-way ticket with no job, no friends or family, no home, and no understanding of why I was doing it aside from the fact that it felt right to me intuitively. It was a ā€˜calculated riskā€™ and a sense of movement when life was stagnant; a sudden and surprising pull in a new direction that I couldnā€™t ignore. Then, I got lucky. The work came quicker than Iā€™d hoped it might. And the friends who felt like family (maybe because we connected in the depths of a GLOBAL PANDEMIC?) did, too, along with other unexpected gifts. I thought Iā€™d stay for only two or three months, but my experiment stretched into a year. After riding out some highs and lows while living alone in a new, partially-locked-down city, I feel tougher. Stronger. Andā€”my biggest win, I thinkā€” a lot more self-trusting. Stacey Farber Instagram - My grandpa turned 99 today and this first image of him was taken LAST NIGHT at his nursing home. No filter. Heā€™s one of my favorite people on the planet, and I so often think about how grateful I am to have him in my life; to continue to have him in my life. There are many things heā€™s taught me about working hard and pursuing joy. He loved being a pediatrician and retired at the age of 93. His work ethic, I think, bolstered his brain health and the social demands of his job gave him energy. Huge! And yetā€” he ate buttered bagels most days. Never once went to a gym. Didnā€™t think about things like kale or skincare or meditation. Heā€™s probably never had a green juice. I guess Iā€™m just baffled by him and his strength; his good luck but also his unfaltering ambition to keep going. To keep living. Iā€™m so proud of him.
