Teri Polo Instagram - This past weekend, Bayley and I got to visit heaven in Charlottesville, VA… ❤️ @ohkaytacos 🐴🐎🏇 We got to meet Big John, who is probably one of the largest horses in the world, literally. Teeny tiny Bison, who is definitely one of the smallest. And of course, dear sweet Colby, who started it all. Among many other amazing horses, minis, and mules, our time at the rescue was absolutely eye opening, educational and heartbreaking. What these young women are achieving goes above and beyond what you might think possible. I was in awe of their strength, fortitude, and absolute love and devotion to these extraordinary animals. You see, many, if not most, of these animals were rescued from k!ll pens. I will not go into detail regarding some of the horrific circumstances that led to these rescues, or where they were rescued from, how and why, but I can tell you this…these women are brave and relentless, powerful and have emotions of steel when necessary. The emotional toll for someone who’s life pretty much revolves around these stunning beasts is indescribable. And they told us they can only stomach the most difficult tasks about once a month because the emotional devastation is too much. These are only a few pictures Bayley and I were able to take because we were so caught up in the magic and joy of spending a couple of hours among these gorgeous “babies”!! And of course, in the company of these extraordinary women. Didn’t even THINK to get pics with them. But rest assured, we will be back and will share more personal stories and pics. Teri Polo Instagram - This past weekend, Bayley and I got to visit heaven in Charlottesville, VA… ❤️ @ohkaytacos 🐴🐎🏇 We got to meet Big John, who is probably one of the largest horses in the world, literally. Teeny tiny Bison, who is definitely one of the smallest. And of course, dear sweet Colby, who started it all. Among many other amazing horses, minis, and mules, our time at the rescue was absolutely eye opening, educational and heartbreaking. What these young women are achieving goes above and beyond what you might think possible. I was in awe of their strength, fortitude, and absolute love and devotion to these extraordinary animals. You see, many, if not most, of these animals were rescued from k!ll pens. I will not go into detail regarding some of the horrific circumstances that led to these rescues, or where they were rescued from, how and why, but I can tell you this…these women are brave and relentless, powerful and have emotions of steel when necessary. The emotional toll for someone who’s life pretty much revolves around these stunning beasts is indescribable. And they told us they can only stomach the most difficult tasks about once a month because the emotional devastation is too much. Not only her dancing, but her choreography, her art, her creative voice…stunning…as is she. Ok. I think I’m finished…for now…😬❤️ I want to wish @daniellestenguillermo the Happiest of Birthdays… This amazing woman held my hand throughout the entire process of The Big Leap. She doubled for me when I wasn’t able to do certain dance steps. Believe me, she made me look guuuuuuud 👀 But more than that, she had patience with me and empathy for me. She was always positive and always lent a loving ear and shoulder to lean on. Her laugh is so infectious that it was my goal every day to hear it! Teri Polo Instagram - Messing around with camera settings, exposures, etc. (@petehalvorsen would be proud…) I think this pic appears as if I’m looking out a window, looking out towards the now, life now, the life to come… “Grief comes in stages” that’s what they say, right? For me it’s been in spits and spurts, forwards, backwards…no rhyme, no reason. I skipped anger…unfortunately I spent a great deal of my adulthood angry with my mom. When she died, that anger died with her. Of course I have felt deep sorrow, guilt, relief, even joy. But these emotions have come randomly, out of order, and out of the blue or because I am sitting here focusing on her death and I am taken aback by what emotion surprises me and takes over. I opened up my eyeglass case the other day, looking for my prescription glasses I couldn’t find, as per the usual, and there were her glasses…I was punched in the heart, I couldn’t breathe for a brief moment. I sat down on my bed and sobbed. The last time I saw those glasses, they were on her face. She was still alive when I last saw them on her face. How can they be here, without her? I found her socks that I gathered from her room at hospice after she died…and yes, I smelled them. They simply smelled like my ma. I didn’t cry. It made me happy. I took a deep breath and smiled because she was still here in the faint scent. How lucky I am! I received the most extraordinary gift in my life, second only to giving birth to my children, when I was able to be literally holding my mother, her face over my left shoulder, as she expelled her last faint breath. I held her and kept repeating “I love you ma” so she was able to take that with her when she left for wherever she was going. The very first emotion I felt as she left was joy! I wept and smiled and kept saying “I’m so happy for you ma!” There was no more pain, she was no longer imprisoned in a body that had failed her years ago, no more sadness and anger and fear, frustration, jealousy, need. I can absolutely with complete honesty say I felt her joyfully pull away and fill the room with abject exultation. You were in the room when she was born, gave her her first bath. You let me come over every day until I was healed. Among many other amazing horses, minis, and mules, our time at the rescue was absolutely eye opening, educational and heartbreaking. What these young women are achieving goes above and beyond what you might think possible. I was in awe of their strength, fortitude, and absolute love and devotion to these extraordinary animals. You see, many, if not most, of these animals were rescued from k!ll pens. I will not go into detail regarding some of the horrific circumstances that led to these rescues, or where they were rescued from, how and why, but I can tell you this…these women are brave and relentless, powerful and have emotions of steel when necessary. The emotional toll for someone who’s life pretty much revolves around these stunning beasts is indescribable. And they told us they can only stomach the most difficult tasks about once a month because the emotional devastation is too much. These are only a few pictures Bayley and I were able to take because we were so caught up in the magic and joy of spending a couple of hours among these gorgeous “babies”!! And of course, in the company of these extraordinary women. Didn’t even THINK to get pics with them. But rest assured, we will be back and will share more personal stories and pics. For me it’s been in spits and spurts, forwards, backwards…no rhyme, no reason. I skipped anger…unfortunately I spent a great deal of my adulthood angry with my mom. When she died, that anger died with her. Of course I have felt deep sorrow, guilt, relief, even joy. But these emotions have come randomly, out of order, and out of the blue or because I am sitting here focusing on her death and I am taken aback by what emotion surprises me and takes over. I opened up my eyeglass case the other day, looking for my prescription glasses I couldn’t find, as per the usual, and there were her glasses…I was punched in the heart, I couldn’t breathe for a brief moment. I sat down on my bed and sobbed. The last time I saw those glasses, they were on her face. She was still alive when I last saw them on her face. How can they be here, without her? I found her socks that I gathered from her room at hospice after she died…and yes, I smelled them. They simply smelled like my ma. I didn’t cry. It made me happy. I took a deep breath and smiled because she was still here in the faint scent. How lucky I am! I received the most extraordinary gift in my life, second only to giving birth to my children, when I was able to be literally holding my mother, her face over my left shoulder, as she expelled her last faint breath. I held her and kept repeating “I love you ma” so she was able to take that with her when she left for wherever she was going. The very first emotion I felt as she left was joy! I wept and smiled and kept saying “I’m so happy for you ma!” There was no more pain, she was no longer imprisoned in a body that had failed her years ago, no more sadness and anger and fear, frustration, jealousy, need. I can absolutely with complete honesty say I felt her joyfully pull away and fill the room with abject exultation.
