Theaster Gates Instagram - The clay body and basic slip of my sculpture is often made from the same material as my black brick. The moments of sculpture that excite me most happen when I’m thinking about larger projects, like St. Laurence, and something hits me, as if the work of St. Laurence or the collections are a way to get to new ideas. Now that the structural work is happening and 2 floors are with drywall, the building feels whole in new ways. These days my journal no longer distinguishes drawings for furniture, building plans, poetry, new sculptural work or paintings. Page after page, I’m trying to solve problems as clearly as I can. It makes me want to build sculptures as buildings and roofs, walls and floors as art. I’m a total mess but I have more confidence that the pipe configuration for radiant heat and the plumber who sets it up, offers sculpture something very special and when I pause to look at my the copper, cast iron, plastic tubes and fittings, I see a sculptural world so generative, it makes me want to leave sculpture altogether and join the plumbers union.

Containing the scores and lyrics of 61 spirituals, it was common for our communities to sing these on Jubilee day. Johnson was a poet, novelist, civil rights leader, lawyer, lyricist and mentor to many of the Harlem Renaissance artists, among them Langston Hughes and Zora Neale Hurston. In 1900, he co-wrote the classic “Lift Every Voice and Sing” with his brother John Rosamond Johnson, who provided musical arrangements for this volume. Tomorrow, for our Juneteenth event at the Stony Island Arts Bank, musician Yaw Agyeman will respond to this object through musical exploration and experimentation. Join us for this daylong sonic journey as we celebrate The Godfather of House Music and share the liberatory power of House music. Under the curatorial direction of trailblazing house music DJ Celeste Alexander (@celestethedj), we are thrilled to honor Frankie through a lineup of Chicago’s hottest emerging and established disc jockeys. This year’s lineup of DJs will lead us rhythmically in the celebration of our bodies, our collective joy, and our loving fellowship. It is a tremendous honor to keep our house music programming accessible to our community of almost 600 people each month. We want to maintain the spirit of this openness, so this year’s festival will also help us raise funds to support to the continuation of our House music programs. Since 2017, @theastergates and Rebuild Foundation have been the humble stewards of the gazebo near which 12-year-old Tamir Rice was shot and killed by Cleveland Police Officer Timothy Loehmann. In close partnership with Samaria Rice, Tamir’s mother, Rebuild has traveled and reconstructed the gazebo on the lawn of the Stony Island Arts Bank, creating a material memorial that serves as a gathering space and call for justice for all of the racialized bodies who experience violence at the hands of our police departments. Since 2017, we’ve had a number of artists and scholars - including Yaw Agyeman, avery r. young, Angel Bat Dawid, and Adam Green - respond to this object of care. We are honored to continue this work with our June 30th program. Join us for this daylong sonic journey as we celebrate The Godfather of House Music and share the liberatory power of House music. Under the curatorial direction of trailblazing house music DJ Celeste Alexander (@celestethedj), we are thrilled to honor Frankie through a lineup of Chicago’s hottest emerging and established disc jockeys. This year’s lineup of DJs will lead us rhythmically in the celebration of our bodies, our collective joy, and our loving fellowship. It is a tremendous honor to keep our house music programming accessible to our community of almost 600 people each month. We want to maintain the spirit of this openness, so this year’s festival will also help us raise funds to support to the continuation of our House music programs. We are deeply grateful that there has been significantly increased demand for these programs, and in order to create the safest and most comfortable environment for all, we are excited to offer a number of ticket options for this year’s festival: General Admission Ticket - $25 Premium Ticket - $50 Includes admission, one free drink ticket, and a commemorative Soul Liberation T-Shirt.
