John’s knowledge of climbing history and equipment has helped us understand where we are today and the importance of documenting the past. @otherworldly__antarctica is the title of a new book by Edmund Stump, Emeritus Professor, School of Earth & Space Exploration, @arizonastateuniversity. Ed taught geology for 37 years and conducted 13 research expeditions to Antarctica. In “Otherworldly Antarctica” Ed combines photography and watercolor illustrations to teach us how the landscape is created. The Rock Cycle illustration helps us understand geologic time. Ed’s brother and field guide in Antarctica, the late Mugs, is pictured on the cover of Mountain Magazine – 1981. Mugs invited me on an expedition to Denali with Ed and Paul Fitzgerald in 1989. The really cool thing about photography is that it is an easy way to start conversations. Photographers by nature (IMO) are curious people. 👀 Curious to experiment. Curious and confident enough to fail in order to grow. Curiosity leads to conversations. And conversation leads to (hopefully) new relationships. In my world of working with brands as a creative, it is relationships that lead to collaborative work and solve business problems. These video clips are from me being curious about a new tool that I added to the quiver last winter. The @fpolev provides unique angles and other forms of run and gun style shots. \ earlier this summer @conrad_anker and I took a spin down an ice climbing route called “The Nutcracker” (we we’re doing summertime maintenance). Some of the footage worked and some of it didn’t. Perhaps it was the extra moisture in the air on the glacier that day or maybe it was a more mystic, unknowable brand of inspiration, but my mind was asked to consider the warm and wet regions of the world and how much of our planet enjoys a tropical climate. Specifically, between the latitudes of 23.5 degrees north and 23.5 degrees south, tropical norms persist. That is, for example, 80% percent of Africa and 60% of South America. From this base level of climate knowledge, a bold and elegant idea was assembled. Imagine, if you will, in areas adjacent to the ocean in these tropical regions, a giant pump that pulls seawater to a nearby location that features a large-scale array of concentric mirrors. These mirrors are designed to track the arc of the sun throughout the day and focus that energy on a main tower that serves as a reservoir for the sea water. A massive solar furnace is created, capable of 3500 degrees celsius at its peak. The saline water is flash boiled and the eruption of rising steam is captured to spin turbines and create electricity. The steam then condenses and results in fresh water that could be used for assorted industrial, domestic, or agricultural needs. At the intersection of a goal, tools, and team, was a daydream that could obviate the use of fossil fuels for the desalination of seawater while simultaneously creating electricity for mass consumption. The metaphor of individuals working collectively to create a power far greater than the sum of its parts was not lost on me and remains just as potent today. One mirror is powerful. 10,000 mirrors focused on the same goal could change the world. Why not?
