Cory Booker Instagram – 51 years ago today the Supreme Court issued the landmark Roe v Wade decision, enshrining abortion rights across the nation. This 7-2 decision quickly turned into a decades-long push on the federal level and across the country to overturn Roe and criminalize and dehumanize all people who can give birth.
This nearly 40-year-old effort ultimately led to the overturn of Roe v. Wade by the court’s conservative majority on June 24th, 2022.
Thirteen states already had laws on the books that immediately banned abortions, anticipating such a decision, and just one year after the ruling, hundreds of pieces of legislation were introduced across the country to restrict or ban abortion — even in the case of rape, incest, or if someone’s life is endangered by continuing a pregnancy — including a nation abortion ban still being pushed by many Republicans in Congress.
Let’s be clear: abortion is health care, and it’s the federal government’s mandate to protect people’s most fundamental rights.
As we reflect today on the 51st anniversary of Roe v. Wade, let this be a reminder for all of us that we must redouble our efforts and put in the work so that everyone has the constitutional right to control their medical decisions, health care, and their own body. | Posted on 22/Jan/2024 18:07:28
