This is the final scene we had the pleasure of filming as a cast & crew of @doogiekamealohamd which will also go down as one of my favorite & most memorable scenes of my entire career up to this point. Partly because I had the incredible blessing of embodying my childhood intention of becoming an actor, which is to be used for a purpose greater than myself. Playing Dr.Charles Zeller for 2 seasons as the first Black, openly Queer series regular character on a Disney show was the greatest gift from @kourtneykang I was granted permission & encouraged to be fun, silly, joyous, messy, thoughtful, deep & wise… in other words, a fully formed 3 dimensional human being. Which is an unfortunate rarity for folk like me in tv & film. His specialty as a doctor is gender affirmation surgery, which is to AFFIRM the authentic lived experiences of so many marginalized folk. All fueled by the desire to help people feel closer to their truest self. That this storyline exists on a teen show is a miracle that I do not take for granted for a moment, especially in a moment where Mahu (trans) individuals bodily autonomy & fundamental human rights are being systematically stripped away. Channeling his purpose has certainly helped me feel closer to my truest self. The final words spoken, in the final scene filmed for Doogie Kamealoha, M.D. were uttered by one of my favorite characters I’ve ever played… “I’m just gonna have fun with it! I mean, that’s the whole point, right?!” That’s the whole point. 👨🏾⚕️🤙🏾🏝️🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️🩵
