32 years ago on this date—April 28, 1992—Jim Gallien saw a hitchhiker standing beside the highway outside of Fairbanks Alaska and picked him up. Three hours later, when Gallien dropped off Chris McCandless just north of Denali National Park, Chris asked Gallien to take a photo of him. Then Chris headed off down the Stampede Trail. Swipe to see the postcard Chris sent to his friend Wayne Westerberg from Fairbanks the day before he walked into the wild. Photo of Chris courtesy of @carinemccandless (anyone who wants to understand Chris should read her book). Photo of postcard by me.

I inscribed these hardcover copies of Into the Wild and Under the Banner of heaven to support a fundraiser for the Montana Skatepark Association and Girls on Shred, very cool organizations supported by Pearl Jam bassist Jeff Ament (who is a badass skater), Pearl Jam, and @jeffamentsarmy. Jeff and Josh Klinghofer composed and performed the incredible soundtrack for the Under the Banner of Heaven series on Hulu; Eddie Vedder made the incredible soundtrack for the Into the Wild film. Hit link in my bio to place a bid on the inscribed books or to learn more about MSA/Girls on Shred

This is the journal documenting the 113 days Chris McCandless spent in the Alaska bush. He wrote it in the back of Tainana Plantlore (2nd photo), a book found inside Bus 142 when his body was recovered. Although his journal entries weren’t dated, we know Chris wrote the first one on April 28, the day he walked into the wild. The alarming 94th entry, which he wrote on today’s date 32 years ago—July 30, 1992—includes an important clue about the cause of his demise: “EXTREMELY WEAK / FAULT OF POTATO SEED / MUCH TROUBLE JUST TO STAND UP. STARVING. GREAT JEOPARDY.” 3rd photo (shot by Chris): A bag of “Eskimo potato” seeds he harvested near the bus. 4th photo: The last book Chris read before dying, a paperback copy of Doctor Zhivago. 5th photo: Page 148 of this book, at the top of which Chris wrote “HAPPINESS ONLY REAL WHEN SHARED.” Photos courtesy of his sister @carinemccandless. Hit link in my bio for much more about Chris’ remarkable life and untimely passing.

My literary agent/adventure buddy @bequitahall took me on a magical mystery tour of the South Platte on gravel bikes this morning that involved 69 miles of riding, 4,200 vertical feet of ascending/descending, and a “dangerous water crossing.” We were out 7 hours and I got seriously worked trying to keep up with her, but it was so worth it.

I benefited from some especially effective splitboard therapy this morning at 13,000 feet on the Divide. And it came with an unexpected bonus: Blower pow! Face shots! In late April!

The crest of the Continental Divide on my sunrise ramble in the Indian Peaks Wilderness this morning. It cured what was ailing me.

A small wildfire flared up in the hills just above Boulder this morning in the 100-degree heat and ultra-low humidity. Quick action by firefighters appears to have it under control, for which I am extremely grateful.
There was a lot of smoke in the air this morning in northern Colorado from all the wildfires burning around the West. It made the sunrise look a bit ominous from 13.2k
