Thankamani is one of my favourite character from my first Malayalam movie, ‘Ivan Megharoopan,’ directed by P. Balachandran. Thankamani is a folk singer, a real-life character that I was fortunate to portray in a movie. I had the privilege to work with so many incredible technicians and artists on this film. It was a truly mindful learning experience.
Balettan is no longer with us. I will always remember and am grateful to you Baletta. You made Thankamani beautiful and special.

Chayiliam will forever be close to my heart. Firstly that character and also I go to perform the only Theyyam that women are allowed to do—Devakoothu—in one of my earlier films. The narrative was also around how a woman was trying to reclaim her womanhood. Secondly, Chayiliam paved the way for me in the Malayalam industry. I don’t think there has been too many films that had boldly shown menstrual blood onscreen and how as a widow, she fights to break societal norms and construct—towards the flight to her freedom! Almost a decade later, Ayali’s Kuruvammal aids a young girl’s fight for her most basic rights. Both of these beautiful works showcase the many misguided rituals and rules around menstruation. I’m just one of those fortunate actors to have played both Gauri and Kuruvammal.
