For Sports Monday: An Appreciation of Richard Simmons Nobody got millions of people moving like the fiery, nutty, irrepressible Richard Simmons. Richard generously gave his high octane energy and support to swim a few laps with me when I did the 48-hour swim in NYC for Hurricane Sandy Relief. RIP loveable, one-of-a kind Richard Simmons. #sportsmomday #nyad #richardsimmons #zandymangold

The magic of the Olympic Games is all of us from around the world coming together through the visual human drama of sport. We didn’t even need to know the names of the two men in the 1500 freestyle to feel the thrill of the chase, Bobby Finke digging down to true grit to hold off Gregorio Paltriniari. We didn’t need to know the long champion history of Novak Djokovic to witness the emotion of his at long last capturing the gold in men’s tennis. He never cried that hard when he won Wimbledon or any of his 24 Grand Slam titles. How about the dominance and joy of both Simone Biles and Katie Lendecky? We have the privilege of watching two superior athletes of their generation. Speaking of best in a generation, we are going to see Leon Marchand’s poetry in the water for a long time. Wasn’t it moving to see Macron cheering him on…and the French crowd rising in loud collective voice each time he took a breath in the breaststroke? Wasn’t Shot putter Ryan Crouser made of some Viking stuff? Each athlete so obviously carved by the work and practice they’ve put in over the last decade. And now the showcase track & field athletes take center stage, reminiscent of the ancient Greeks. Do you agree that these Paris Olympics come at a particularly good time for the collective spirit of the world? How moving to see the Ukrainian athletes in their pursuit of excellence, away from their desperate war. #sportsmonday #paris2024 #olympics #nyad

Today is the kickoff of my Sports Monday and it’s only fitting that we begin with the upcoming Paris Olympics. I’m an Olympics junkie. How about you? Have covered several Games, been a fan at others. Did you get to see Simone Biles in her qualifying for the team? Her moves, her strength, her majesty at each gymnastics discipline are nothing short of magnificent. And to think she has come back strong from her mental issues in Tokyo four years ago. We all stand and cheer for Simone in Paris. And have you noticed that the women on our US gymnastics team are now mature women, not little girls? Another athlete I’m going to follow is double amputee Morgan Stickney. She smashed her world record in the 400 free yesterday and was the first ParaOlympian selected for the US team. Morgan’s condition that led to both her leg amputations still sends her to the hospital ten days a month for infusions that render her weak and nauseous. She wrote me from the hospital only three weeks ago that she was suffering but would dig down and get her strength back for the Trials, which she did with her Never Ever Quit spirit. Go Simone! Go Morgan! #sportsmonday #olympics #simonebiles #morganstickney #paris2024 #nyad

Love hearing so many of you are into Rugby Sevens. Did you see the profile piece on badass American player Ilona Maher? OMG. I’m her new biggest fan! A poster-woman for strength and pride as a big, strong, bold woman. I find the total medal reports, rah rah for American medals, beside the point. What’s more moving to me is when French athletes soar in front of the home crowd. Leon Marchand so smooth in breaking. Michael Phelps’ last standing world record in the 400 IM….gave me chills to hear the French crowd roaring in timing with his breaths in the breaststroke. But equally crushing to see the French women’s gymnastics team fail to qualify for the 8 top spots. I love that the Olympians’ bodies make it evident as to what they’ve all been doing over the last decade. The swimmers, gymnasts, track athletes’s bodies are as inspired as Greek statues. The horses’ bodies were just born that way…lol…they look like elegant dancers. Murray and Evans showed such resilience in that come-from-behind tennis dubs victory. Bravo. Were you a little worried to see Simone Biles’ calf taped up? A tweak from a couple of weeks ago seems to have been aggravated. Let’s hope she’s okay. #paris2024 #olympics #nyad
Au Revoir Paris! All in all, I give these Games an A plus. The athletes brought their astounding excellence. The coverage transported us into profound emotions. And Paris itself upheld its reputation as the most beautiful city in the world. These Olympics will be remembered as a bright two weeks of hope and good will. Magnifique!! #nyad #olympics #paris2024
On Sports Monday here, Let me add my admiration for Andy Murray, who has now played his last Wimbledon. Standing on fabled Center Court, where he had won two men’s singles titles, the favorite son of the British fans, we all took in a long video retrospective of his career. To be an equal, The Fourth, in the era of Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic says it all. And the tributes emphasized what a feminist Andy is, always on the forefront of battles for women athletes. So much Wimbledon chat we could share, but I cannot let this week go without declaring, as I have many times before, my horror at eating contests. The annual Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest took place in Coney Island July 4. The “Champion” … yes I use the word with utter sarcasm … Joey Chestnut, was not there but not to worry. His record of 62 hot dogs eaten in 10 minutes still stands. Half the world’s 8 billion people are starving. Enough. Let’s get back to Wimbledon. #sportsmonday #andymurray #wimbledon #womenssports

Let’s talk racquet sports today. The badminton has me wide-eyed. I yell multiple times per point, with their lightning quick gets, their athletic slams. Great stuff. I could become a full-time fan of that sport. Lily Zhang at table tennis is so fierce, so quick. Captivating. And how great, unique, is it to see Rafa Nadal (and Djokovic) on the courts he has owned for the French Open for fourteen years, but in an Olympic environment. A highlight for the Games no doubt will be Nadal, the elder statesman, teaming with Carlito Alcaraz, the puppy dog phenom, for Spain in the doubles. #olympics #paris2024 #nyad
