Have you ever met someone whose natural state seems to be joy and optimism…and only later do you discover that they’ve been through deep, painful suffering? Then you realize their hope and positivity are a deliberate, powerful CHOICE in the face of lingering sadness. That choice seems like a superpower when you see that they do not mind sitting with you in your own struggle. It sometimes feels absolutely involuntary to try to get as far away from discomfort as possible, but our pain and our suffering can be a tremendous gift to others. Challenge is inevitable. Suffering is unavoidable…and when someone who has experienced our suffering comes up alongside us and says “me too,” we feel less alone.
Today’s #thisisthewaywednesday highlights someone who has popped up in the background of many of my posts already. @robkeisacker is part of the backbone of @voicesagainstcancer Against Cancer and his vulnerable, generous expression of what he, his wife, Nicole and their daughter Cassandra experienced when his son Ian passed away from cancer was a motivating factor in my desire to get involved. Rob brings absolute joy, vitality, determination, and selflessness to everything he does for the group because he wants every honored child, every sibling and every parent to know that they are not alone. There is not a day that passes without the Keisackers missing Ian, but Rob has told me that he sees and feels the blessings that come from Ian’s story helping others. He lives to serve, and I challenge you to keep yourself from smiling and laughing when you’re hanging out with him.
December 21 marks the 9th anniversary of Ian’s passing, and every year Rob urges friends and family to do something in Ian’s honor. Will you heed that call in your own life? This week, take a moment to do something that helps you remember someone you’ve lost or to extend a hand to someone else who is feeling loss. We are stronger together.

Three years ago today, we said goodbye to Dad. I got to be with my sweet Mama to celebrate his birthday last Sunday, and we will be forever grateful that we could spend one last celebration with him and commemorate that day each year before recognizing this one.

Have you met Anjali and Andrea? If not, you should, and you CAN because of their TTRPG fundraisers. @sweeetanj etanj and @wisdomcheck have big hearts and big imaginations. Life is coming at them fast for various reasons. But their desire to share their love for #TTRPG and their desire to DO SOMETHING about causes they care about (shelter pets for Anjali, cancer for Andrea) won over their fears and apprehensions about taking on the unwieldy beast of production and organization. Both of them spearheaded the organization of streaming games with folks living in different places and just MADE IT HAPPEN. On #thisisthewaywednesday, let’s flash back to few weekends ago to the @voicesagainstcancer #605PopCon, where a whole lotta folks in Sioux Falls shaved their heads to raise money and awareness for pediatric cancer- some for the first time, and some to continue a years-long tradition in memory of loved ones lost. At these @stbaldricks head-shaving events, shavees℠ raise money for childhood cancer research by pledging to shave their heads in support of cancer patients, who often lose their hair during treatment. Lucky me- I got to try out some newly discovered barbering skills and contribute to the cause. Thank you to everyone who participated, either by shaving or being shorn. Let’s roll a Nat 20 and eliminate cancer! I met Blair Driedger of Adventure Dice earlier this year while trying to decide between 11 or 12 different sets of BEAUTIFUL dice (we can all use just one more set, right?). As I ogled all the pretty designs, Blair said his wife is usually with him but was resting after her most recent cancer treatment. I’mam no longer surprised when a convention conversation turns to cancer; we are all affected by it in some way. But what we choose to DO with such a daunting diagnosis is the #thisisthwaywednesday testament I’m uncovering again and again. Andrea and Blair’s story proves that our challenges cannot snuff out our joy and the gifts we have to offer. Their love of TRRPG inspired them to start @adventuredice to create a safe and welcoming space for anyone and everyone who wants to game. That same year, they started fundraising for the @cancersociety, joining the Relay for Life as “Andrea’s Adventurers.” Then, in 2021, Blair and Andrea combined their desire to spread their love of TTRPG with their desire to fund a cure for cancer, and organized an epic weekend of games designed to fundraise. Flashback to an incredibly special time in June when I got to return to the stage where I had my FIRST professional acting gig. This time it was for the 50th Anniversary Celebration of @virginiatheatrefestival. I returned to some songs I sang many summers ago (“Mr.Snow” from Carousel) but it also felt right to try something better suited to where I am now. “Being Alive” is a seemingly simple song, but age only shows me more and more how subtle and specific and anti-sentimental it is. My mom was in the audience a few nights, and thinking about the lyrics in the context of her 55-year marriage to my dad almost stopped me in my tracks. We all say we want to be known, but what if that means you don’t get to dictate how people see you or what your “image” is? Vulnerability and day-to-day intimacy are not for the faint of heart.
