BBC presenter Kirsty Young speaks to @emmabarnett about the debilitating impact of living with chronic pain. She tells Emma on Today how she learned to accept the effect of fibromyalgia, a long-term condition that causes pain all over the body. The Today Programme | Listen on BBC Sounds
Well, this was something. Recreating 6 year old me and my casual lean for the @guardian lovely #flashback feature in @gdnsaturday This photo hung above my grandfather’s desk for 30 years. The attention to detail by the team was incredible – right down to that plastic ivy plant and that 80s studio sandy backdrop. 🤌 😂 Thank you for having me and transporting me back to a pretty blissful time. I’m away on a holiday with the family – which means two very young children – and trying a new contraceptive pill in a bid to help with my endo and shut down my cycle for a while. Dizziness, slight nausea and feeling spaced/not quite myself as I acclimatise – having already changed pill once (after 8 rocky days) and now on day 2 of new one. It’s been a long time since I did this and would love any tips /answers as to how you coped with acclimatising and how long it took you? There is very little out there in terms of what people do as they get used to the new hormones and levels in the body. I will write this up so it can hopefully help other women on this rocky road. Thank you in advance 🙏 PS Ideally I would prefer for people not to advise me against chemicals and the pill – only to share advice or answers to the question if you felt you had something to say. It’s taken a long road, many doctors and much trial and error to get to very carefully thought out place. Which also included a disastrous experience on the mirena coil. I would be ever so grateful and hopefully we can help other women too. #pill #contraceptivepill #hormones #trying #endo #endometriosis #adenomyosis
It might be possible that I have bought the last beach bag of my life. It was love at first sight in a small shop in France. I hope I never need another. I wrote a whole piece on why over at Trying, my newsletter. Subscribe if you would like www.emmabarnett.substack.com – I’d love to see if you agree with my rationale… #ifyouknowyouknow #beachbag #finality

I’m not the biggest follower of weather. Even though I occasionally read it aloud for the new job. But this week I wrote about it. That’s because I can’t believe the weather flowing through some women’s bodies and minds. How well and unwell women all around me are fielding such extremities. Can you imagine if we could forecast that? Some thoughts and excerpts from my newsletter. Would love your take. Subscribe: www.emmabarnett.substack.com #trying #women #weather

What was striking this week was how much healing needed to be done, and was already taking place, writes Emma Barnett. “From the manicurist in Liverpool raising thousands for her local library and community hub which had been set alight, to the man in Hartlepool fundraising for the mosque that was targeted (but thankfully protected) to show support for the Muslim community, people were moved to try and help. And by the end of the week that was, these stories were becoming as much a part of the riots as the riots themselves, and it was heartening. “It is easy to feel powerless in the face of senseless violence and racism, but a picture was emerging of how big and small acts were changing the face of the week that took everyone by surprise, from politicians to police to those simply living their lives.” ⬆️ Read @emmabarnett’s latest column at the link in @theipaper’s bio.

Last week I invited a journalist to the last working windmill in London. Like you do. I’ve long admired @evawiseman so I was thrilled she said yes to hanging with me @brixtonwindmill – one of my favourite local places that weirdly so many people still don’t know about. And yet it was the first place I thought to include when we started taking photos for our colouring books. The result is this lovely article in today’s Observer and online @guardian telling the story of our family business @colouryourstreets – the local and bespoke colouring book company and our mission to map the UK and beyond. We spoke about what community means; the importance of people’s local areas to them; matrescence; what it’s like to work with your husband – plus I admitted one my more embarrassing nicknames at school… the piece is online now. There may have also been an unintentional joke you can only make in a windmill… keep swiping. Thank you to the lovely volunteers @brixtonwindmill for having us. Your work keeps the places we all value going and gives heart to our local communities. And the millstone placement was perfect. 👌 (and yes I am just casually hanging out of a windmill window for the photo). And thanks to @thejeremyvine for that very early order. It was such a joyous coincidence. We aren’t yet a year old but are learning so much as we go – as well as discovering so many incredible places across the UK just like our windmill. Thank you for all of the suggestions of where we capture next and keep em coming over @colouryourstreets We are ready! 🖍️ ✍🏼 🎨 #colouring #colouringbooks #familybusiness #colourstreets #artsandcrafts #arts #local #bespoke #uk #london #manchester #brixton #brixtonwindmill

How colouring in can help a little…over @colouryourstreets we are proud to support @rbkares – a charity powered by volunteers, who do many amazing things in their community of Kingston, and are helping children struggling with their mental health. Thank you for all that you do 🙏 and for thinking both creatively and compassionately. It also happens to be #nationalcolouringbookday in the US ♥️ 🖍️ 💪 #kingston #colouring #community #volunteering #creativity #pens #crayons #colouringbook #nationalcoloringbookday #nationalcolouringbookday
