🧟🌽Corn…but make it Spooky! Meet : Huitlacoche! Or corn smut, or corn truffle. It’s a common delicacy in Oaxaca and is technically a plant “disease” caused by the fungus Ustilago maydis. It typically grows after a particularly rainy season in sweet corn that hasn’t been sprayed with fungicides. Side note: I like to tell this to farmers that spray their sweet corn, because if you’re lucky enough to get corn smut, it’s much more valuable than a standard ear of corn. Good for the soil and good for your business 🤝 It has a smokey, earthy flavor that makes it lovely base for fall soups, stuffed in tamales, or as an elote! . . . . . . . . . . . . . #fungifanatic #foragedfood #mushrooms_of_our_world #wildfoodlove #wildfood #mushroomrecipes #fallrecipes #fall #halloweenrecipes #spookyseason #itscorn #mushroomhunter #huitlacoche #spookyszn #fungi_fan_club #mushroompicking

🍅🤟🏾Okay so before I start sharing some of my radical harvests, I want to share the not so radical idea of : weaponized gardens (boooo, hisss). I know the homelessness crisis isn’t going to be solved online or overnight, but using gardens to displace humans is just *gross*. If you see these cropping up (ha !) in your neighborhood, I encourage you to organize a meeting to find alternatives ✨🤟🏾 . . #gardeninspo #housingisahumanright

I’m a getaway girlie now 💅🏾 don’t get me wrong I still love a good backwoods camp site, but honestly this little cabin was a perfect mix of convenient luxuries (a shower and mini fridge are luxurious to me, okayyy!!) and outdoor access (that window, though! 😮💨). If you’re an introvert like me, sometimes solo camping can get a little… interesting. But having my little cabin community to come back to after a day of foraging was just *chefs kiss*. Radical 🤟🏾 Harvest 🍄🟫 time! I’ve missed you all! And not in the slightly sarcastic way your yoga instructor tells you they’ve missed you to imply that you never come to class anymore and therefore they’re judging you because you’ll never be a limber elder™️ and you must not have your life together (I digress). I’ve genuinely missed this community! As I’ve watched the popularity of foraging grow, farming become (dare I say) “popular”, and homesteading become a house hold (home hold?) topic, I’ve stepped back a bit from sharing my knowledge because I felt 1) there are SO many super effervescent accounts you can follow to get the same ole information that lil’ ol’ me is saying 2) people on the internet can be mean sometimes 3) I wasn’t super into the transition from photo sharing to video creating. But I’m back because I want to document all of the odd and interesting foraged and farmed foods that I find! Together! With you! And also I’ve noticed how much more understanding, care, and compassion there is for neurodivergent humans on social media now. So if you’re still reading… hi! I’m happy to be here and happy you’re here too. 🤟🏾🍄🟫✨ . . Do people still use hashtags? . . . . . . #fyp #foraging #mushroomsociety #fungiofinstagram #mushrooms #yap #audhd
✨ 🌍 🤍 as earth month wraps up, I think it’s important to stay climate change focused in a way that honors our individual needs for healing and rest. I’ve made it a part of my practice to focus on all of the good we, as a collective community, have poured into the planet. Of course there’s always more work to do, but our time can be best served when we celebrate the sweet stuff. #ClimatePowerPartner #EarthDay2023 . . . . . . . #earthmonth #climateresilience #climatepositive #climateaction #sustainability #climatejustice #ecoresponsable
🍋do you guys know about the falling fruit app? This is what I use to find in season fruit, herbs, mushrooms, and medicinal plants! It’s basically a crowdsourced informational map that shows all of the places in your city that have fruit trees and other edible plants and mushrooms that are in public areas or where a private resident allows people to forage. If you use the app, I recommend that you contribute back by only taking what you can personally eat and adding any wild public foods that you find along your journey. Let me know if you try it! . . #foragedfood #forageandharvest #lowwasteliving
〰️Years ago, I used to primarily take natural building workshops from folks for whom it wasn’t a tradition nor necessity, but rather an addition to their growing roster of eco friendly pursuits. Places that advertised a fermentation workshop after a tantric healing class after a light ceremony (??) after a medicine circle after a deer hide tanning class. 〰️I still believe in ethical skill shares, but I’m a bit reticent to return to primitive skill gatherings wherein indigenous •life•styles• are centered, but indigenous •lives• are rarely amplified. I’ve learned to support those that build with natural materials out of honor, sacrifice, tradition, beauty and art. It’s a bit harder to find places like these, but somehow the pursuit is part of the process. . . . . . . . . . #naturalbuilding #designdeinteriores #primitiveskills #regenerativeagriculture #slowfood

Let’s talk about this : 🍄🟫 ! It might just look like a little brown mushroom to you, but to fungi fanatics everywhere this is a MAJOR MOMENT. We finally have a mushroom that isn’t a cartoon amanita muscaria!! Let’s try to identify it. In the absence of images of its underside and without the ability to take a spore print, upon first glance I believe it’s some sort of agaricus? Let me know what you think this 🍄🟫 is and how you came to that conclusion. Also! Thanks for all of your thoughtful words suggestions emojis on my last post about 🍅🤟🏾radical harvests 🤟🏾🍅. 👩🏾🌾 as much as I love, wild, radical, chaotic, and unplanned gardens, it’s important to get a bit organized if you’re growing food for a harvest. I rarely stick to my crop plans, but I still record where I planted everything (even if it died after two weeks!) because it’s important for proper crop rotation. Let’s say you planted tomatoes in one corner of your garden, they got eaten by hornworms after two weeks and you never harvested a single tomato. So the next season you forgot you planted tomatoes in that spot (because you dint remember eating any tomatoes) and decide to plant cabbage! Your cabbage will struggle to grow because the tomato plants you forgot about have already taken in the exact nutrients that the cabbage needs to thrive! Boo! This is where referring to your crop plan would help 🙂 Let me know if any other tips that help you all stay organized! . . . . #organicgardening #gardentips #permaculture #gardendesign #farmtotable
🍄🟫 random rant // I wish either 1) forests were more accessible to people who use mobility aids 2) I had the ability to shrink you all and bring you with me in my pocket (my choice of shrinking mechanism would either be Wonkavision, the belt Patrick used in that “wombo” episode of SpongeBob, or whatever happened in the honey I shrunk the kids movie). 〰️ 🦊hoshigaki & the art of winter preservation Of course the winter has her fruits. Like any season. But as life pertains to persimmons, I suggest you: Pluck the fruit in the crook of autumn’s tired arm. Peel, polish, and preserve. To create dried persimmon’s in the art of hoshigaki you’ll find it best to: Find fresh persimmons. Peel them lengthwise with a fruit peeler or even your grandmothers pocket knife. Hopefully you’ve retained the branch for hanging, but if not, simply insert a short screw into the persimmons wider half. Attach twine and hang fruit from a curtain rod or clothes rack or anything sturdy and horizontal (except, perhaps a lazy barn cat) Massage gently and daily to encourage crystalline sugars. Discourage fruit flies by spritzing with vinegar or employing a box fan. After months, you’ll have a deeply sweet, sticky sunset hued obsession and confection. . .. . . #hoshigaki #forageandharvest #foragedfood #persimmon #diy #veganrecipes #foodblogger
