This is where I spent my holidays for the first 50 yrs of my life- the Var region of France. Tumbled down stone cottages reached via a long dirt track . My father, the Yorkshireman, was the custodian- no central heating, no TV. I think that’s why my sister Tash and I became actors – rainy holidays spent inventing shows, singing songs, making hotch potch costumes. We grew up there, and much later so did our children . It’s where I learnt to cook clear set for people- gathering produce from local markets. The smell of baked herbs in the air. The soundtrack of cicadas. I planted the stones of peaches thinking they’d grow. Side stepped scorpions. Found tortoises in the undergrowth. In the very early years there were turtles in the stream. The rocks sparkled when the sun hit them. My father ,who died not far off the age I am now, ashes are embedded there- in the soil he loved so well. But after Tash left it was never the same for me. We’d literally dreamt our lives there. We sold it some years ago. It wasn’t so much like the closing of a chapter- more like the book’s binding had gone. You must have a place that’s run throughout your life- even if you ran from it? Song lines I think it’s called . And then we move on. Because we do. The heart beat beats .
Little bit of summer cheekiness. Caught off guard by friend’s cheeky filming as I looked into empty tree abode at rental property. My friend said “When I was a child that tree house would have held all magic” . I agreed . To keep the curiosity of a child – that’s something x #treehouse #curiosity #cheeky
When was the last time you just took off on a whim? Saw little gap and seized it. I did last week. Felt rather giddy on arrival , and tried to capture shot of crescent moon ( failed rather well as you can’t see it, but was just above the tree). New neural pathways they say when our brain takes in new sights language experience. Circuit Breaker. Ditch routine. Momentary respite. I hope you can get one. Get giddy. Joy can strengthen. Early days, plays, and forays. Tash me and Papa Tony with his pal and fellow Yorkshireman David Hockney and co joining in. It was Easter time and the theme was Easter bonnets by the look of things. My father really encouraged us to be actors-‘ actress!’ Tash used to insist. Some of my latest reads/buys to read. Admission: I read ‘Sapiens’ on and off for months and finally finished it last week-read other books between pauses as they gripped me. Anyone who knows me will spot the book I ve not yet read- have a guess? I ll put answer on next post. One I’ve only just started . No part of me can comprehend the level of hard work, commitment, discipline, inspiration of writers ✍️ . Book shops , like libraries, are sacred places to me but I get a bit trigger happy and come out laden. As a result my home has stacks of books randomly displayed like art installations. Writers, how do you do it? Murakami said he took up marathons, and later triathlons to give him the stamina to finish his novels. Thank you, thank you. We are the beneficiaries. Xxx #bookstagram
