“Driving while female” is what the police charge sheet read when Manal al-Sharif was arrested in 2011 for driving a car in Saudi Arabia.
Infuriated by the lack of rights for women in her country, Manal set out to change things, and in doing so risked her liberty, and her family. Her arrest received worldwide attention and set Manal on a path to further activism for women’s rights.
