A perfect exhibition of @levan_lagidze’s work in Tbilisi last week. For some reason I thought his epic works had their roots in landscapes and cityscapes, but it blew my mind to see his earlier works, in particular the figure drawings, who’s bodies were folded over. So now I see figures in his new era landscapes and cityscapes too. Spot the moment Sandro met Levan 👀

I’ve sat at countless Georgian Supra tables. Guests arrive to a feast where every inch of the table is covered in food. There is a toast master and toasts are made for every person at the table, as well as absent loved ones. I often wonder about how the younger generation will carry it on? At first all that food might seem too extravagant, but what’s cool about those dishes is that they can last, after a supra we usually dine on that food for days. The supra can also be relaxed and informal, with people coming and going. I love that the tradition hasn’t changed much from my grandparents to my parents’ generation. What traditions do you cherish from your home and how do you see them evolving?

I wanna share one of the things I love about the Georgian alphabet: each letter represents every single sound in the language, which means there is virtually no way to misspell anything. When I was learning English at the age of 8, I couldn’t understand how so many of the English letters had so many possible sounds. The problem becomes very apparent, for example, when years later I try to make a call to a phone company or an energy company and have to give the spelling of my name. To achieve the correct results I have to use the NATO phonetic alphabet: M for Mike, E for Echo and so on, which down a phone line can take up precious time before I’ve reached the reason for the call. I know this is a niche thing to write about, but I think about it a lot, as the sound of words in my adopted language is a big part of my songwriting. Because English letters are not direct representatives of the sounds, as a songwriter I had the joy of discovering the phonemic alphabet, shown in picture 3, which thankfully does paint a more accurate picture of the sound of words. For any language nerds out there: does anyone know why the English alphabet developed this way? And any multi-linguists out there, would you share what quirks or efficiencies your (m)other languages have? K x
Happy International Women’s Day! We’ve celebrated this week with such lovely events – yesterday with the @oxfordculturalprogramme, joining some of the most accomplished women songwriters on a panel with @carlamarieuk, @jinjinofficial, Miranda Cooper and @Lisamaffiauk. Saw the deeply moving @letterslive at the @royalalberthall l and heard the great organ played by @annalapwoodorgan. Sandro has started nursery (can you believe!) and to top the week off, it was World Book Day on Thursday, our costume was the Gruffalo of course 😎 #IWD2024 #inspireinclusion #letterslive #worldbookday

Big Georgian celebrations as the Olympic medalists return home with 3 gold medals and 7 medals in total for the country. Plus here’s Jamie Oliver giving his views on the Georgian supra. So interesting to learn that compared to English recipes, Georgian dishes use herbs as a main ingredient. Wonder if @aliceinframes has watched it? #thejoyofbettercooking
