“Hi, everyone. It’s Bisan from Gaza and I’m still alive!” Fuck each and every one of the 150 “celebrities” who tried to reverse Palestinian journalist Bisan’s Emmy nomination for documenting 10 months (so far) of surviving genocide Bisan’s rage, anger, and tears are commas, semicolons and exclamation marks punctuating Israel’s savagery in her land. I wrote a Wonder Chronicle about the wonder of 25yo Bisan! Bisan is so beloved and cared for that many of us around the world know her simply as BISAN! Her full name is Bisan Atef Owda And how dare you despair when Bisan’s hope still burns bright? And how dare you entertain complacency as this storyteller outruns death? Follow Bisan and trust her as the barometer of the tenacity of your wonder: catch up with Bisan. https://www.feministgiant.com/p/the-wonder-chronicles-3?r=50le&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web

Genocide aided, armed, and abetted by the U.S will not be less worse if the U.S. gets its first Black woman president. Genocide is not any less worse if it continues under the watch of a vice president who is a positive role model for masculinity. i wrote that essay before the DNC. Israel’s genocide of Palestinians in Gaza will be no less worse under the watch of an historic Harris-Walz administration. Feminism is not merely a woman in a position that has never been held by a woman before. Feminism is a woman in a position of power who uses that power to destroy, not uphold, patriarchy. And what is genocide but patriarchy writ large; toxic masculinity drunk on its power and ability to dominate, to obliterate, to kill, maim, and terrorise women, children, and men. https://www.feministgiant.com/p/essay-feminism-vs-genocide
Asking people who oppose or disrupt VP Kamala Harris “Do you want Trump” “Do you want Trump?” is the wrong question. Of course they don’t. They want the U.S. to stop arming Israel’s genocide. They want Harris to earn their vote by clearly stating what she would do should she become President to end that genocide. They want Harris to earn the vote of Palestinian-American, Arab American, and Muslim American voters that Dems need in swing states to defeat Trump. They want Harris to earn the vote of every person of conscience who has demonstrated, joined encampments for Gaza on campuses across the U.S., and who has joined the Uncommitted Movement to protest the Biden-Harris administration Asking protesters demanding the U.S. end its support for Israel’s genocide “Do you want Trump?” is the wrong question to ask. The question is when will the U.S. stop arming, aiding, and abetting Israel’s barbarism? Genocide interrupts and disrupts. And you can be sure that interruptions and disruptions will be there in force at the Democratic National Convention, which will be held in Chicago August 19 – 22. My new essay: On Vice President Kamala Harris, Rep. Cori Bush, disruption, protest, feminism and genocide. Genocide is not polite. Genocide interrupts. Genocide is that action for which there must be an equal and opposite reaction. Feminism must be that equal and opposite reaction to genocide not only because genocide kills women and children and maims and terrorises pregnant women. Feminism is not only about women and children and pregnant women. Feminism is about destroying patriarchy, and what is genocide but patriarchy writ large; toxic masculinity drunk on its power and ability to dominate, to obliterate, to kill, maim, and terrorise women, children, and men. Feminism is not merely a woman in a position that has never been held by a woman before. Feminism is a woman in a position of power who uses that power to destroy, not uphold, patriarchy. Genocide interrupts and disrupts: the lives of those ravaged by its barbarism; the delusion that those of us far away can look away as we skim the still lake of our placid day to day. Asking protesters demanding the U.S. end its support for Israel’s genocide “Do you want Trump?” is the wrong question to ask. The question is when will the U.S. stop arming, aiding, and abetting Israel’s barbarism? Link in bio and stories https://www.feministgiant.com/p/essay-feminism-vs-genocide

Three years ago today—August 15, 2021–the Taliban took over once again and created the world’s most serious women’s rights crisis. Taliban 2.0 have distilled their hatred of women into the perfect patriarchy, a template for the total control of women. Under the Taliban, Afghanistan is the only country where girls are banned from education beyond the sixth grade. The Taliban have also violated women’s right to freedom of movement, banned them from many forms of employment, dismantled protections for women and girls experiencing gender-based violence, created barriers to them accessing health care, and barred them from playing sports and even visiting parks. Afghan women have not asked for their country to be invaded nor for its continued occupation by invaders. They have asked us to stop selling them out.
FEMINIST GIANT and @strandbookstore feminist book club returns in August and I am thrilled to announce that I’ll be conversation with @ashathanki and @sadeyea, on their latest books A Thousand Times Before and In Exile: Rupture, Reunion, and my Grandmother’s Secret Life. Our in-person discussion on August 26 is free to attend but registration is required. Link at FEMINIST GIANT About A Thousand Times Before: A heartrending family saga following three generations of women connected by a fantastic tapestry through which they inherit the experiences of those that lived before them, sweeping readers from Partition-era India to modern day Brooklyn. Ayukta is finally sitting down with her wife Nadya to respond to a question she’s long avoided: Should they have a child? The decision is complicated by a secret her family has kept for centuries, one that Ayukta will be the first to share with someone outside their bloodline: the women in her family inherit a mysterious tapestry, through which each generation can experience the memories of those who came before her. About In Exile: In a deeply personal investigation, award-winning journalist Sadiya Ansari takes us across three continents and back a century as she seeks the truth behind a family secret. Why did her grandmother Tahira abandon her seven children to follow a man from Karachi to a tiny village in Punjab? And though she eventually left him, Tahira remained estranged from her children for nearly two decades. Who was she in those years when she was no longer a wife or mother? For Sadiya herself, uninterested in marriage and children, the question begets another: What space is available to women who defy cultural expectations? Through her inquiry, Sadiya discovers what her daadi’s life was like during that separation and she confronts difficult historical truths: the pervasiveness of child marriage, how Partition made refugees of millions of families like hers, and how the national freedoms achieved in 1947 did not extend to women’s lives.
