‘Edinburgh made a great impression upon us; it is quite beautiful & totally unlike anything I have seen’. This line from Queen Victoria’s journal followed her first visit to Scotland with Prince Albert in September 1842. Her experience would cement the Royal Family’s enduring affection for the country and its capital. From 1850, the family has used the Palace of Holyroodhouse as their official Scottish residence, spending time there celebrating the capital’s people and culture. As Edinburgh celebrates its 900th anniversary, we look back at Royal visits and events in this extraordinary city. 1. Queen Elizabeth II and The Duke of Edinburgh on Princes Street during events to mark Her Majesty’s Coronation in 1953. 2. A Garden Party in the grounds of the Palace of Holyroodhouse in June 1953. 3. Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth arrive at the Palace of Holyroodhouse in 1947. 4. Queen Elizabeth II during the Ceremony of the Keys ceremony in 2022, accompanied by The Duchess of Edinburgh. 5. The Earl of Wessex at the Ceremony of the Keys in 2022. 6. The King meets members of the public during his visit to Kinneil House in Edinburgh in 2023. 7. The King and Queen, with The Prince and Princess of Wales watch a fly-past following a service at St Giles Cathedral to mark the Coronation in 2023. 8. The princess Royal holds an Investiture at the Palace of Holyroodhouse earlier this year. 9. The Princess Royal, Patron of the Scottish Rugby Union, presents the Auld Alliance Trophy Murrayfield Stadium earlier this year.
