I’m excited to share that we won! This is the speech I wrote sitting on the stoop of Lorraine Hansberry’s old apartment before the white lady who (presumably) lives there tried to subtly get me to leave ✨
I grew up COGIC. So I have to first give honor to God who’s the head of my life. Thank you to Davy, Max, Ella, & all the wonderful folx at @tribecaaudio! Thank you to the Tribeca audio jury. Wow. It is really such an honor to be in such great company with these phenomenal audio creators. Thank you @reneemwilson for believing in this project when it was merely on the page & making sure it went as far as it could go! Thank you @lizmcbee none of this would be possible without your hard work & heart. Thank you @tammylynnehall for your spirit & blessing this project with beautiful music, working with you will forever be one of the greatest honors of my life. Thank you to our little producer, Adrian who manifested our win before there was anything to win. We would not be here today without our sound designer. Thank you, Collin, for all your beautiful work and for making sure we made the Tribeca deadline. I owe a special thank you to our phenomenal cast! Your voices made this project magical. So many people have supported this project over the years. So I must thank our collective parents, siblings, spouses, grandparents, children, aunties, mentors, and kin. I made this project to honor women like Lena Horne, Abbey Lincoln, Lorraine Hansberry, Ella Baker, Nikki Giovanni, Angela Davis, & Assata Shakur. At 76, Assata remains in exile. I would be remiss not to call for the freedom of Assata, Mumia, and all political prisoners. And as we witness so much injustice here at home and in the Congo, Gaza, Sudan, Haiti, and all over the globe, I must also call for the freedom of all occupied people all over this world. This is a celebratory occasion but it is hard to celebrate while witnessing such horrific violence. In the spirit of Red for Revolution, I encourage everyone to make radical love a daily practice and to do everything in their power to make our world freer and as James Baldwin once said, more human dwelling!
