In this flashback I was 7 months pregnant with my second child, reflecting on my decision to work with a midwife for the first time. The reproductive justice community was an incredible resource, and the support and knowledge I gained helped me to make this transformative decision. Black midwives are the heartbeat of our communities, providing care, compassion, and expertise that our mothers and babies desperately need. Their role is not just important—it’s vital. I had the honor of being a surrogate for Obama during both campaigns, and campaigning felt good because we had a sense that we were truly moving our communities and country in a better direction. There was such joy in going door to door, gathering our neighbors, and sharing our hopes and dreams for the future. Politics have felt bleak for a while, and this is such a refreshing return of possibility, joy, and hope for the future.
