When I was in college, I saw Kent Melton’s sculptures for the Incredibles and it made me want to pursue animation as a career. What he did was so different than my 2d art, but something about the way he captured form and made 2d images come to life was special. When I started at Disney feature, one of the first things they showed us was the sculpture that Kent had made of Rapunzel. It was beautiful and managed to capture the energy and essence of Glen Keane’s drawings so well, it felt like magic. Years later, I would get my own little reproduction of a Kent Melton Sculpt. I’ve had it for years and I still admire the mastery of skill. I’m sad that the world will not get to see anymore of this man’s brilliance. RIP Kent, you inspired many.
