Adam Shankman Instagram - This little boy survived brutal bullying, cruelty, being beaten, egged, discrimination, anti LGBTQ laws, the AIDS crisis, the fight for marriage equality, alcoholism and severe depression. This little boy just wanted to be safe and happy and sing and dance and have friends. And once this little boy came out, a whole world opened to him. He found his creative voice, he sang and danced, and he had a whole community and family of loving friends. He was a part of making hundreds of movies and tv shows and plays, he produced the freaking Oscars. And all because he jumped off the scariest cliff of all and became his true self, out loud, and out in the open. He came out and said I’m me and I’m worth living and I’m worth loving.
Yea, this little boy is me, and the journey has not always been easy (often it’s been difficult in ways no one would wish on that sweet little boy) but here I am. Proud of the man that kid became no matter how many people wanted him gone not because of who he was / is, but because of “what” he was / is.
Well, what I am, is a person. A human being. A brother, a son, a friend, a romantic partner, a collaborator, a colleague, a director, a producer, a dancer, and A JEW, and I’m GAY AF.

@them Minnesota Governor Tim Walz just signed an executive order to make the state a refuge for trans people who flee their homes in order to seek lifesaving transition-related care.

On Wednesday, Executive Order 23-03 was signed by the governor, which orders state agencies to protect people seeking gender-affirming healthcare in Minnesota, as well as the entities that provide it. State agencies are also specifically forbidden from providing information or assisting investigations to penalize trans people and their allies for seeking transition-related care. Judgments from other states that terminate parental rights because the parent provided their child with transition-related care will not be recognized by the state of Minnesota, and the state will also refuse to comply with subpoenas that seek information about trans people who travel to Minnesota to obtain care.
Additionally, the executive order tasks the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) with preparing a report that summarizes the literature on the safety and effectiveness of gender-affirming care, to be presented to the Governor, Lieutenant Governor, and Legislature by the end of the year. The order also strengthens protections for insurance coverage of transition-related care and mandates MDH to refuse to approve HMO contracts that discriminate against people on the basis of sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression.

Noting that other states have “curtailed access to, or even criminalized” transition-related care, Walz’s executive order recognizes that “these actions pose a grave threat to the health of LGBTQIA individuals by preventing them from affirming their gender identities through safe and scientifically proven treatments.”

10 years ago I looked so bad I shocked myself when I saw myself in a mirror.

10 years ago my how was virtually extinguished.
And 10 years ago, I chose to live.
10 years ago I sought help because I didn’t want to fade into nothingness and die a waste.
10 years ago I found love in a community of people who just wanted to do better. To be better. To create and thrive.
10 years ago I started to respect myself and found love and compassion.
10 years ago I stopped feeling shame, having secrets, losing days, and making excuses.
10 years I weirdly did find love in a hopeless place: in me.
To all who helped me find my life again, thank you.

Adam Shankman Instagram - I spent much of my childhood in fear. I was teased, picked on, bullied and beaten up, because I was just myself. I was afraid of my family disliking, disowning and abandoning me if they knew who I actually was. I lied about everything to survive because I somehow “knew” what I was was bad and wrong. As a result, my life nearly ended because I needed drugs and alcohol to numb the terror. To quiet the voices. To be anything but who I was because who i was was not worth love and happiness or joy. Because I am gay.
Nothing I believed was true. My family loves me unconditionally because I actually am who I am and live authentically now. When I came out, my life actually began. I no longer have to lie, and live with soul shattering shame. My friends love me because I’m a good and loyal friend. My work is all about love. Love of family, love of self. The love that comes from being authentic and accepting yourself, accepting others and being decent and kind and living a life of integrity.
I wish for a world free of prejudice and shaming. Of discrimination. I wish for a world driven by love and kindness. I am an optimist and believe in people but it’s only because I now believe in myself. I wish for everyone the same with all my heart.

For our #johnhughes tribute (he sadly passed that year) we brought together the stars of the breakfast club, Ferris Bueller, home alone, and many more culture changing classics to pay tribute to the master.

Adam Shankman Instagram - The DanceOne Foundation is honored to announce a partnership with @therealdebbieallen and the Debbie Allen Dance Academy (DADA), a non-profit dance school that offers classes to underserved communities, to further drive accessibility and advancement for the next generation of dancers.

As part of the partnership, DanceOne will provide DADA a percentage of revenue and scholarships for DADA students to attend DanceOne events throughout each year in addition to supporting DADA’s other charitable activities and mission. This mission aims to use dance, theater, and performance to enrich, inspire and transform the lives of students, with a particular focus on disenfranchised Black and Latino communities. DanceOne will also introduce the Debbie Allen Inspire Award, given yearly at the closing event of the Radix Dance Convention, the annual elite dance competition that draws the best dance talent from around the world.
