Amaryllis Fox Instagram - Our hearts are overflowing. Our family is complete.❤️
.
Cassius Watts Thoreau Kennedy, born the 30th of Aug at 1:28pm
.
We named him Cassius for the great Muhammad Ali, who sacrificed millions, relinquished his titles and went to prison, rather than participating in an unjust war. Thoreau, for Henry David Thoreau, who chose jail over the support of slavery. And Watts, for Alan Watts, lifelong student and teacher of nonviolence, who plays his own role in our love story.
.
All in all, this baby better learn to read fast!
.
Til then, he is snugged in the arms of his big sisters and showered in our love. May he stand on the shoulders of his namesakes and live life as a fighter for peace.

Amaryllis Fox Instagram - Imagine if we had spent a trillion dollars not on tanks and missiles and rifles, but on hospitals and universities, internet and roads, girls empowerment and human rights.
.
Instead, two decades’ worth of politicians, generals, and diplomats poured more money and weapons and bodies into a war they have known for many years to be lost.
.
May we honor the thousands of Afghan and American lives lost by remembering this moment the next time we’re asked to support a military invasion overseas.
.
May we demand investment in peacebuilding and infrastructure, civil society and human rights instead.
.
And today, may we move mountains to get as many Afghans to safety as possible.
.
My bravest veteran brothers and sisters are working tirelessly right now to get these peaceworkers and their families out. But even as thousands make it onto emergency transports and tens of thousands more wait their turn amid the terror and chaos, we must recognize that the flight out is only the beginning.
.
When these courageous Afghans, who have fought so long for a more peaceful future, land here in the US, they must not find themselves alone, with no support structure, no resources, no life to call their own.
.
Please consider volunteering your time, resources, and friendship to newly arrived Afghan refugees in your community. From groceries to SIM cards, diapers to ESL tutoring, there are countless needs facing families fleeing warfare when they first arrive on our shores.
.
To receive basic staples from members of your new community offers more than just sustenance for the body — it offers desperately needed food for the soul.
.
So if you are feeling helpless in the face of so much suffering, please reach out to your representatives to insist every Afghan ally get to safety and sign up with Miry’s List (link in bio) or another refugee care organization to help when they arrive.
.
Together as a people, we can begin the long work of healing the scars of war and vow never to repeat the same grave mistakes again.
Amaryllis Fox Instagram - I know this challenge is supposed to be a photo of me alone, but since the day this shining spirit was born eleven years ago, my heart has never been alone. She makes me laugh, she makes me learn, she makes me proud. I would not be the woman I am without her in my arms. And I am so in awe of the young woman she’s become.
.
I love you strong, beautiful, brilliant challengers @_cherylhines @npdemember @tamtam.intl and every woman, girl, mother, daughter, sister, aunt, and grandmother who makes our world go round.

Amaryllis Fox Instagram - I first went to Myanmar in Sep of 1999 as a teenage student journalist to interview Aung San Suu Kyi.
.
Suu Kyi was then a global peace icon. Her country was in the grip of a brutal military regime, which tortured and killed its opponents, banned the internet, and exterminated its indigenous peoples.
.
Members of the National League for Democracy (NLD) were forbidden from speaking with the press. Even as a student journalist, I was detained by military police & eventually deported for interviewing Suu Kyi.
.
It was a grim time, but the weak flicker of democracy’s flame — protected and nurtured by activists meeting in secret attics and hidden basements — was growing slowly brighter.
.
I didn’t return to Yangon until 2015, when that democratic flame seemed to have finally lit up the nation. I stood in the street outside NLD Headquarters, in the very spot where I had been arrested in 1999, and instead of military convoys and barbed wire, the road was full of democracy flags and jubilant singing, as the NLD won the country’s first free and fair election in a landslide.
.
Even then, in the midst of that heart-swelling spasm of hope, the cracks in Burma’s fragile democratic experiment were beginning to show. Suu Kyi was struggling, often failing, to to be the noble leader we all expected. The hard-fought progress toward freedom was beginning to slip away, even as the world toasted its success.
.
Fast forward to last night’s military coup. Democratic leaders rounded up and detained. Internet access and news channels gone dark. International airport shuttered. A year-long state of military emergency declared.
.
In many ways, it feels like 1999 all over again. The Burma of caged windows & military checkpoints. How fleeting were those songs that flooded the streets in 2015. But I know in my soul they will be back. It may take years, but too many brave Burmese activists have fought for too long to give up now. Their dream of democracy will be realized once more. And until that day, we must stand with them. Advocate for them. And remember alongside them that government of, by, and for the people is a most fragile and precious treasure, both at home and overseas.
Amaryllis Fox Instagram - My heart is aching. I hate that this is happening. I hate that we did the same thing in Iraq. I hate war with every fiber of my being.
.
That’s the most hate I’ve expressed in a long while, but it’s not directed at the people of any country. It is militarism that I hate. The shattering of peaceful lives by bombers launched from distant bases. The murder of children from the sky.
.
Yesterday, parents dropped their kids at nursery schools and met for coffees at street cafes. Today, a foreign military has rained fire on their land. Millions of our fellow humans — Ukrainians and Russians — woke up to find themselves at war through no choice of their own.
.
Make no mistake. This is not the choice of everyday Russians. No more than everyday Americans chose to transform Iraq into a moonscape. A man called from Moscow this morning to express the shame he feels about his country’s actions. “We are all just Putin’s hostages,” he said.
.
Citizens of militarized countries all over the world know that feeling of helplessness all too well. Whether it is our homes destroyed by the shelling, or our tax dollars paying to shell the home of another, the sense of powerlessness can be overwhelming.
.
But we are not powerless. We are not helpless. We must unite, now more than ever, to demand our leaders do the hard work of investing in peace. A budget is a moral document. For years, global budgets have prioritized war over life, invested in bombs at the expense of schools, missiles at the expense of hospitals. Today, as so many times before, we see the devastation those investments return.
.
I pray that this is a wake-up call and not a moment to double down. I pray that it is a turning point and not a crossing of the rubicon. I pray that when the history of this season is written, it is a story of awakening, a story of the world’s people, you and me, linking arms and saying no more.
.
If you are in Russia, stand up. If you are not, you stand up too. We are, each of us, the heroes we are waiting for. Only together can we reject the wars of our parents, the wars of arms dealers and military cronies, safe in their plush ivory towers. Together we can — and we must — demand peace.

Amaryllis Fox Instagram - Our beloved Toots. You were named for the artist whose colors you wore on your chest. You landed in our life like a guardian spirit, impossibly fragile, impossibly brave. From the first day you joined our family, you came with us everywhere, perched on one of our shoulders or nestled under our hair. You ate salad at cafes beside us, romped with us on evening walks, let children everywhere nuzzle your soft feathers. You reminded each person you met that however broken this world may seem, it bursts everywhere with consciousness and magic and life.
.
The night before you crossed the rainbow bridge, I lay with you on the sofa. I had no idea it was our last moment together. But in the stillness, I could feel your heartbeat. You turned your head so I could rub the spot under your chin. We were connected.
.
Today, as we let your earth body go, as so many around the world face so much inconceivable loss, I take quiet comfort in remembering that moment. The mystery that pulses under the surface, the force that connects us all. It is, in the words of the original Toots, a love that is deep as the ocean, and wide wide wide wide as the sea.

Amaryllis Fox Instagram - Roman is a 26-year-old activist, who has been organizing peaceful protests against an abusive dictatorship since he was age 15. His girlfriend, Sofia, is a law student, focused on human rights.
.
For the crime of helping young people to speak out peacefully against state violence, Roman was surveiled, named a terrorist and forced to flee for his life.
.
He applied for asylum in Europe and believed himself finally safe to write about his dreams of freedom. Then, yesterday, Roman and Sofia were pulled from the sky.
.
Traveling on an Irish airliner between two European cities, their plane was diverted and forced to land by fighter jets, scrambled at the orders of the very dictator Roman has spent his teens and twenties organizing protests against.
.
Right now, they sit in chains in Minsk, facing brutal interrogation for the crime of peaceful protest.
.
Make no mistake. This was an act of international piracy, undertaken by a draconian tyrant.
.
But also remember this. That tyrant is scared. So scared of two students in their twenties that he had to deploy multi-million dollar fighter jets and hijack an international flight to silence their young voices.
.
This horror in Belarus is not the first time we have seen autocrats brought to their knees by the peaceful protests of young people. And it will not be the last.
.
But every outrageous use of force against the young, vocal and innocent is another reminder of youth power. Because if young people protesting peacefully in the streets did not wield the power to wipe the strongmen from the map, those strongmen would not deploy their jets and bombs to shut young voices down.
.
May we stand with Roman, Sofia, and the young and righteous across the globe tonight. And may we remember that older leaders may seem all powerful, but they hold this Earth in trust for the citizens of tomorrow. It is young people’s lives that will be most profoundly shaped by the mistakes we make today. And it is their voices we must amplify in the battle for a brighter dawn.

Amaryllis Fox Instagram - Magical hours and days these are.
.
Baby Bobby arrived safe and snug on January 7th at 6:27 pm. She’s named for her father, grandfather and great grandfather, carrying their legacy into a future where women stand shoulder to shoulder with their fathers, brothers, and sons to do the work of love in the world. May she hold in her heart their fathomless commitment to human dignity, peace among nations, and protection of our natural world.
.
During this pregnancy, Bobcat and I traveled many thousands of miles together, visiting distant corners of this beautiful earth, working with some of the world’s most poor and finding, again and again, human spirit so rich.
.
After that long journey, this littlest fur cub was born on the first day of epiphany, the season set aside by ancient christians to mark the realization that love vanquishes all. As I hold her softly breathing in my arms, surrounded by love in our warm den, that couldn’t feel more fitting.
.
Every day, we, each of us, experience the mysteries of life, of love, of family, of grace. May we revel in the vastness of the great beauty we share, strengthened to bridge the small details we do not. May we do right by one another, friends and strangers alike. Look after one another, protect one another, love one another the way we do our littlest ones. Because in the end, each of us is just a baby grown. Each of us, a caretaker in waiting. Destined to save and savor one another. United in a community I can only dream may one day be as filled to overflowing as our little bear pack feels tonight. 🐾❤️

Amaryllis Fox Instagram - I always wondered why we honor our fallen heroes on the last Monday in May, along with the more widely celebrated Nov. 11th.
.
The 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month was seared in my mind from history class & WWI poetry. Veteran's Day was in November for a reason.
.
But why do we mark a second remembrance on this day in May?
.
The answer is uniquely American. And uniquely beautiful, I think. The first Memorial Day was held at the end of the Civil War, as returning soldiers decorated the graves of fallen friends & our heartbroken country began to repair its violent divisions in the name of a unified peace. It was maybe no accident that this coincided with an old holiday -- a moveable feast known as Whit Monday.
.
Whit Monday marks the story of God’s spirit entering the hearts of those who had been divided by language & tradition & belief to remind them that they belong to the same cosmic whole.
.
In much of Europe, Whit Monday is celebrated as the beginning of summer, just as we think of Memorial Day here at home. But here, the day takes on the profound melancholy & hopefulness of lived experience. The Civil War taught us how steep is the price of division, in lives & treasure, property & dreams. I can’t fathom the courage of those early veterans, burying grievance & trauma to strive for a reunited land.
.
On this Memorial Day, a century & a half hence, we have the chance to honor those fallen heroes with that same striving -- to rekindle our commitment to one another & the unified nation for which they paid with their lives. On this Whit Monday, we have an invitation to pause & open ourselves to the great cosmic Oneness -- the shared destiny that links us, one to another, vulnerable creatures, safe only in each other's vigilant keeping.
.
So maybe, reach out to that neighbor with the yard signs in the wrong color. Share some tea with that friend you stopped seeing. Turn off the talking heads and offer your enemy a listening ear. Let's start burying some hatchets before we bury more dead. Because the endless fields of lost heroes don't need more company. They'd rest a lot easier knowing today's heroes were living instead.

Amaryllis Fox Instagram - Some weeks are so filled to overflowing that it’s hard to conjure words. This was one of those.
.
Marriage is a mysterious thing — intimate yet communal, earthly yet sacred. In promising our lives to one another, we also promise them to our communities, our country, our world. To hold one another up, to love fiercely and unconditionally, to remember, even in the times of most trial, that we are all parts of one being, destined in our deepest hearts to honor and protect one another as we would honor and protect ourselves.
.
Never have two people felt luckier in their tribe than we have this week, surrounded by friends and family and music and laughter and wisdom and joy as we crossed the beaming threshold.
.
And never have I felt deeper love for this country, making our happy way back west, kayaking the great lakes and biking across the mighty Mississippi. Every time I think I know this land, it shows me something still richer, still more full of promise and beauty and hope.
.
May we each find in our love for those we most treasure a wellspring of love for those we don’t yet know. Or don’t think we want to know. Because that is the ultimate gift of love. It’s a fractal, an inexhaustible, self-replicating force, more powerful than division or darkness or fear. The way we love one person affects hearts in distant corners. Our ripples spread farther than we know. A single act of love can become a hundred thousand. And devotion to one beautiful, beloved other can heal the distance between us all.

We named him Cassius for the great Muhammad Ali, who sacrificed millions, relinquished his titles and went to prison, rather than participating in an unjust war. Thoreau, for Henry David Thoreau, who chose jail over the support of slavery. And Watts, for Alan Watts, lifelong student and teacher of nonviolence, who plays his own role in our love story. . Amaryllis Fox - 1.9K Likes - Imagine if we had spent a trillion dollars not on tanks and missiles and rifles, but on hospitals and universities, internet and roads, girls empowerment and human rights.

Amaryllis Fox - 1.4K Likes - I first went to Myanmar in Sep of 1999 as a teenage student journalist to interview Aung San Suu Kyi.

Amaryllis Fox - 1.2K Likes - My heart is aching.

Amaryllis Fox - 1.1K Likes - Roman is a 26-year-old activist, who has been organizing peaceful protests against an abusive dictatorship since he was age 15.

During this pregnancy, Bobcat and I traveled many thousands of miles together, visiting distant corners of this beautiful earth, working with some of the world’s most poor and finding, again and again, human spirit so rich.

Amaryllis Fox - 832 Likes - I always wondered why we honor our fallen heroes on the last Monday in May, along with the more widely celebrated Nov. 11th.

Amaryllis Fox - 789 Likes - Some weeks are so filled to overflowing that it’s hard to conjure words.

Caption : Some weeks are so filled to overflowing that it’s hard to conjure words. Every time I think I know this land, it shows me something still richer, still more full of promise and beauty and hope. .
