Ana Marie Cox Instagram - My mom died 12 years ago today. She was beautiful, smart, charming, and a thoroughly destructive (to self and others) alcoholic. That’s what killed her.

I don’t know how I thought I could write a book about our relationship quickly. Well, I do: I thought that I could think my way through it. I thought I could do the research and that would be the core of the book: talks with scientists about childhood trauma, a complete family tree.

I thought I could do all that work without my feelings distracting me. I thought I could use concentration and intellectual rigor in the place of feeling. I’ve been good at that.

But grief will be heard. It demands attention. Grief will surface with a vengeance whether you want it to or not. It will make you pay interest if you have ignored its bill.

So for a year and a half I have been feeling my way through it. I have not been writing as much as I thought I would… and slowly letting go of punishing myself for that. I have been trying to invite myself to write rather than making myself write.

So I invite you to write with me. Sunday at 1pm CT via Zoom, link to come. It’s a spontaneous invitation. The best kind.

UPDATE: Link! https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZAucOmpqDkuH91I-ow9X0SCFA-sGq4i2YEC

(UPDATE: Link in bio, finally!)

It’s a follow up to my celebration of recovery last month (yes she died a month and a day after I got my first year sober). It’s also a celebration of recovery, but — if you like this topic — a celebration of allowing oneself to feel grief… the only way to an ongoing, forever-in-process recovery from it.

Join me just to be in community and support in the invitation to feel what demands to be felt.
Ana Marie Cox Instagram - Saw Alex Garland’s Civil War without thinking too much about the fact that my hair was still dirty, had no makeup on, was wearing a shirt I pulled off the floor. But it turns out to have been exactly the look I needed to pay homage to Kirsten Dunst, who is fantastic in the movie and the movie fantastic overall. I loved it. And it’s the first movie in years that left me just sitting in theater while the credits rolled, thinking about how I felt.

I really might see it again. It hit me particularly hard as someone who has benefited from political upheaval — I’ve never been a war correspondent but I am drawn to and sometimes benefit from unrest and discord, even if I have soul-deep belief in one side being preferable to the other.

Some people have accused it of being both-sidery and I find that critique baffling. It has a moral center. But it doesn’t pull punches.
Ana Marie Cox Instagram - God willing, I'll have 13 years of sobriety on March 23rd.

To mark this special occasion, I'm hosting a virtual writing party for anyone who wants to reflect on whatever it is they're building to or recovering from. I'll provide some prompts but the topic is OPEN.

📅 Date: March 23rd
🕒 Time: 3:00 PM CST
⏰ Duration: Approximately 2 hours (or until the ink runs out!)

Bring your favorite writing tools and a celebratory snack or bev, connect with fellow writers, and celebrate recovery, whatever that means to you.

You can register off the link on the front page of my website anamariecox.com!

Ana Marie Cox Instagram - Lucky 13.
Ana Marie Cox Instagram - Pretty sure someone needs to invite me to the Hamptons.
Ana Marie Cox Instagram - Tonight the brave little man is at @veterinary_emergency_group, getting more fluids and pain meds. And, get this: I can visit him *anytime.* I could stay the night! They have guest rooms! “That’s our whole thing,” the nurse told me, “You don’t have to just leave your pet here.” I am confident enough in their care — and his prognosis — that I will likely not be back until morning. Honestly, we both could use the sleep.

Also I haven’t showered since the adventure began. Had a moment earlier then I thought, “Ew, Ex, you’re stinky!” And then it realized it might be me.

Oh hey also sign up for my workshop, because the first class is tomorrow and I guarantee you the format will be quite heart-led.
Ana Marie Cox Instagram - Ex update! He’s been a lot better but still not out of the woods. Part of the problem is he clearly hates his new diet food — low fat, low protein, bland. He is obviously hungry, because he keeps going to the food and treat cabinet that now holds nothing but forbidden delicacies.

He’s also tried to get into the bathroom where the kitties eat and I had a minor heart attack when I was cleaning the litter box and thought he snuck some dry food behind my back — I decided he didn’t make it to the bowl because there was so much left and I imagine he would have taken more than a discreet munch. He’s also not showed any set backs since then, knock wood.

I have some plain grilled chicken that I bought for my own treat and after consulting with the vet, I’ve been using tiny, tiny bits of it sprinkled into warmed-up diet food and he’s begrudgingly had some small meals.

I will get chicken today to boil and make into a completely safe supplement (the grilled chicken, plain as it is, might still have more fat than is ideal).

I am going to become the dog mom that cooks more for her dog than herself.

He’s drinking plenty and has not had any further accidents in the house, all good signs.

Luckily, I’ve also been able to secure the services of a full-time nurse who is very protective of his patient.

I still don’t know what day it is but I do have a column due, pretty sure.

Thanks to everyone who has written or sent messages. This has been scary and all-consuming. Exley has been my constant companion in these past few years of chaos and challenges; he’s never needed my help like I needed his. I am happy to be here for him and just want to keep being here for him and for him to keep being here, too.

Ana Marie Cox Instagram - The Losers return to a very familiar place: ‘Salem’s Lot. But things look a tad different in 2004.

Starring Rob Lowe, Donald Sutherland, Samantha Mathis, and the late and great Andre Braugher and Rutger Hauer, this TNT miniseries updated the 1975 novel by shifting the vampiric action into modern times. This affords the narrative a more topical lense, particularly the mutual feelings of a nation still reeling from 9/11 and the ensuing war overseas.

Join the Losers in the popular Stephen King town as they weigh in on the miniseries’ 2004 vibes, the eerie connection to Wolves of the Calla, the changes to the source material, and the phenomenal cast — particularly Sutherland and Brauer. They also debate whether it’s cynical or earnest, why all the characters are jerks, the edge lord vibe of it all, and its connection to a more recent miniseries cut from the same cloth: Chapelwaite.

Ana Marie Cox Instagram - Exley update! Eating is a really good sign. :)
Ana Marie Cox Instagram - Exley update! Eating is a really good sign. :)
Ana Marie Cox Instagram - Gonna keep wearing my thrifted Brooks Brothers until I get invited to “summer” somewhere.
Ana Marie Cox Instagram - Exley update: Resting comfortably.

Vet said he was very anxious at the kennel after the strong meds wore off so that it would be normal for him to conk out here. He did eat, as documented, and even ate a little more later. He has gone outside to do his business and growled at Molly for trying to steal his food. (Turnabout is fair play is what Molly said.)

So things are returning to normal if only I could remember what day it is. I think I’m possibly on MSNBC tonight?
Ana Marie Cox Instagram - New haircut who dis?
Ana Marie Cox Instagram - Ex update: Clean bloodwork results! Pancreas is functioning normally, his energy level is normal-ish (given being on 600mg of gabapentin), and he’s eating more.

The vet said that he may be able to return to a less restrictive diet in a couple of weeks, which both of us will enjoy more. Also I got some meds for his as-yet-still undesirable poops, which have given us backside a certain… aroma.

The vet tech cleaned up back there as best she could and told me she’d give him what I’d call a “doggy Brazilian” but he thrashed too much so his bikini modeling days will have to wait.

Bram continues to be attentive to both of us, dividing his care between emotional and physical support (purrs are healing, I learned that from Margaret Atwood).

His insurance rate went up $10/mo but still all worth it.

I remembered it’s Friday today!

Enjoy your weekend, thanks again for all the comments and messages.

Ana Marie Cox Instagram - I try not to feel too bad about this -- it's a family disease, after all. But, it's true, I have raised a large adult son of an alcoholic.

Exley can't come with me to meetings, but I've filled our home with recovery literature (that, uh, he can't read, BUT... VIBES) and we often meditate and pray together.

Molly and Bram have somehow escaped this fate (they're frighteningly well-actualized) perhaps because they were not raised by *two* alcoholics? Or, you know, cats. Less prone to co-dependency.

If you wonder about being an ACA, check out the "Laundry List" (Google it!). ACA has been an incredible program for my recovery. Exley will need someone to listen to his Fifth Step and it can't be me, so maybe if one of you starts now...

(Got this idea from following @confidentmutts)
Ana Marie Cox Instagram - Finally have the post to show folks when they ask what country’s flag I have tattooed on my arm.

lol: the tattoo IS a Rothko, it’s THAT ROTHKO.

Ana Marie Cox Instagram - I wrote this terrible piece of doggrel during an Adult Children of Alcoholics meeting. Enjoy! (I think it'd be a great song to teach kids but I'm not ready to write a bad song.)

When your head’s a mess
And your to-do list is too long
You’d rather stay in bed
Just do a half-assed job

Your inner critic is very loud
You’re about to sob
Don’t do the hardest thing
Just do a half-assed job

You’re a perfectionist
You’re above the mob
Be among the masses
And do a half-assed job

Perfection’s an illusion
It keeps you trying too hard
Join the rest of humanity
And do a half-assed job

This doesn’t really rhyme
I’m teaching by example
And I feel really strongly about this
Please let yourself do a half-assed job

Ana Marie Cox - 832 Likes - My mom died 12 years ago today.

Ana Marie Cox - 321 Likes - Ex update!

Ana Marie Cox - 257 Likes - Exley update: Resting comfortably.

Ana Marie Cox - 238 Likes - Ex update: Clean bloodwork results!

Ana Marie Cox - 217 Likes - I try not to feel too bad about this -- it's a family disease, after all.

Ana Marie Cox - 169 Likes - I wrote this terrible piece of doggrel during an Adult Children of Alcoholics meeting. Enjoy! (I think it'd be a great song to teach kids but I'm not ready to write a bad song.)

When your head’s a mess
And your to-do list is too long
You’d rather stay in bed
Just do a half-assed job

Your inner critic is very loud
You’re about to sob
Don’t do the hardest thing
Just do a half-assed job

You’re a perfectionist
You’re above the mob
Be among the masses
And do a half-assed job

Perfection’s an illusion
It keeps you trying too hard
Join the rest of humanity
And do a half-assed job

This doesn’t really rhyme
I’m teaching by example
And I feel really strongly about this
Please let yourself do a half-assed job
