Caption : It is with great sadness we announce the passing of André Leon Talley on January 18, 2022 in New York. Mr. Talley was the larger-than-life, longtime creative director at Vogue during its rise to dominance as the world’s fashion bible. Over the past five decades as an international icon was a close confidant of Yves Saint Laurent, Karl Lagerfeld, Paloma Picasso, Diane von Furstenberg, Bethann Hardison, Manolo Blahnik and he had a penchant for discovering, nurturing and celebrating young designers. His byline appeared in Vanity Fair, HG, Interview, Ebony and Women’s Wear Daily and he was the editor of Numero Russia. Mr. Talley wrote several books, including Valentino, A.L.T.: A Memoir, A.L.T. 365 and Little Black Dress for Assouline, and contributed to Valentino: At the Emperor’s Table and Cartier Panthère. He was the subject of the documentary The Gospel According to André and his recent memoir, The Chiffon Trenches became a New York Times Best Seller. In 2014, he was named artistic director of Zappos Couture, and he has been on the Board of Trustees of Savannah College of Art and Design since 2000. Mr. Talley was awarded the Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres from the French Republic in 2020 and the North Carolina Governor’s award for literature in 2021. He was a long-standing member of Harlem’s Abyssinian Baptist Church. 🕊 #thechiffontrenches 📸// #jonathanbecker Photograph by Jonathan BeckerLikes : 262230

Caption : ALL:IN. High octane glamour is back. The young Bidens frame POTUS and FLOTUS, in super elegant freshness. They exude authentic glamour. It is a breeze to see how they each have individual style, without being tonedeaf, as in carrying a $70,000.00 Hermes satchel. Everytime the former first family that is now chilling in Palm Beach, came out the door: it was empty vessels of glamour. They just looked like they had opened a Fed Ex box and piled on the retail labels. The labels wore them. These young members of the Biden family, dress with true ease; they like cool labels like Miu Miu, @ullajohnson and Dior cool super sneakers on Inaugural Day. Can’t wait to see how Anna Wintour captures First Lady Dr. Jill Biden on her first Vogue cover. I wake up feeling like there’s fresh air in my room before I open the door. And its not from an aerosol can of Febreze. #Vogue#CFDA#WhiteHouse #bidenharris2020 #dc #godblessamerica #makeitfashionLikes : 37976

Caption : My fashion evolved from my growing up in the South. First, I had a sense of style that was traditional and impeccable – suits and white shirts and the luxury of beautiful clothes to go to church in. I evolved from that. I was wearing suits up until about the age of 40, 45. I evolve my own style based on my own historical research into iconic people like Louis XIV or Louis XV, or the French courts, or the traditional wear of North African men – shirts to the floor or djellabas or kaftans or baboosh, the slide without the back. So, my style has evolved over the years into comfort and basically that’s why I like UGG, because it’s a comfortable shoe, and it’s almost like wearing a bedroom shoe for the whole day. That just makes life easier. I love beautiful luxury shoes. I have wardrobes of Manolo Blahnik shoes made just for me and wardrobes of John Lobb shoes (which I could not afford today) and Berluti shoes, Roger Vivier shoes, Tom Ford shoes, but as beautiful as your foot looks in these custom-made shoes, there’s nothing as comfortable as wearing an UGG slipper. #feelugg #monoloblahnik #johnlobb #berluti #tomford #ugglife #uggs #makeitfashion #torlowei #rogervivierLikes : 37106

As you probably know from The Chiffon Trenches, I’ve experienced many peaks and valleys in my life and remain quite resilient. The matter we are dealing with is unfortunate, but will be handled by my very capable legal team at this time. To Akeem Smith and the people who put up the Go Fund Me and those who have contributed, I appreciate the thoughtful gesture and generosity, but it is completely unnecessary. 📸// Alice Springs #thechiffontrenches #resilience #cfda #vogueLikes : 36474

Caption : On the grand Pont Alexandre III in Paris, France, in Tom Ford court coat, Ralph Lauren black tie, Charvet shirt, Roger Vivier court shoes, photographed by Jonathan Becker, my favorite bridge in Paris. Paperback writer: Chiffon Trenches, my New York Times best-selling memoir goes on sale in paperback next week. It has been a long, hard year but the memoir has bought me incredible joy and news. I was nominated for a Grammy award for audio sound, which was a first. To be nominated is already a win. And the most incredible joy I sustain, is that I learned last Sunday, I am a Chevalier de l’ordre des arts et des lettres, of the French Republic. This was the best day in my life, to be in the august and impeccable body of Chevaliers: Diana Vreeland, Tina Turner, James Baldwin, Rudolph Nureyev and for a black man educated in public schools in Durham, North Carolina, I thank my French teacher, the late Cynthia P. Smith, who wrapped me in French: the language, the culture, style, history and literature. I also want to thank Wanda Garrett, my English teacher, who still resides in Durham, and who is a member of the Links Chapter of Durham, who had her own television show in Durham, early in the Sixties. She somehow knew that I was special. Oh how I wish my mother, my father, William Carroll Talley, and my grandmother, all her nieces and nephews, all her siblings , and all my cousins who have gone on to glory were here. Caption : God of Love, you give us love and we must live in the moment of love. @tiffanyandco in its long, long history has stood for the highest standards of high style, in jewels and crystal, china, everything. Audrey Hepburn in her Little Black Dress and styrofoam coffee cup,put the flagship store on the map with the opening scene of the film, Breakfast at Tiffany’s. And now its is time to recognize Queen Bey and King Jay-Z. They represent the iconic pose of high style: she wearing a rare yellow diamond of such brilliance,as both, lean, elegant and featured against a Basquiat. What is celebrated here is finally, a powerful brand, aligned with the power of a black brand of power, comes together in partnering and supporting HBCUS, in America, with scholarships. Bey and Jay put the money where it matters. By the way, you can’t get any better than this image of two self-made talented individuals who represent love. God is Love. Tiffany is about Love. Caption : True to form, the estate auction of André Leon Talley was as grand as he. Far exceeding the pre-sale estimates, Christie’s raised over $3.5 million for his beneficiaries, Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem and Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church in Durham, North Carolina. The iconic auction house saw a tremendous number of new bidders, many of whom were millennials. While all 66 lots sold at Christie’s and another 300 online, there are many more treasures in André’s estate. André left a bequest of clothing, accessories, and fashion memorabilia to SCAD, to be displayed, as well as his beloved Truman Capote sofa. Prior to the auction, the trust opened his home, allowing SCAD to acquire over 300 items, enough for a least 65 complete looks of Andre’s, including one of the 3 Norma Kamali Sleeping Bag coats. Special thanks to all of you, to the incomparable @therealdvf and to @christiesinc for the care and concern for the legacy and cherished belongings of our dear André. As Pulitzer Prize-winning fashion critic @robingivhan said, “A man is much more than his possession, but in the case of André, these objects allude to the dignity instilled by his Southern upbringing, the bounty of his star-dusted life.” We look forward to future exhibitions @scaddotedu the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture @nmaahc and others. We thank God for André’s life and for his continued blessings. 🕊️ #sundayservice #thechiffontrenches #howigotover #andreleontally 📸// @squirefox Represented by Art Department Licensing by August ImageLikes : 29287

Caption : As we prepare our tables for Thanksgiving tomorrow, I’m reminded of a beautiful luncheon that was hosted by Kay Graham in her Georgetown home, in her legendary Billy Baldwin- decorated dining room. The luncheon was in honor of Diana, Princess of Wales. To my surprise, I was seated to the right of Diana. This was indeed an honor. As the luncheon continued, I made a colossal blunder. My elbow knocked Princess Diana’s red wine glass straight into her lap (she wore a lavender Gianni Versace suit with a slim pencil skirt). There was an audible gasp at the table. I said to myself, inside my head, “oh well, this is it, you’ll never be asked anywhere again. You’re sunk.” With grace and total ease, Diana dipped the edge of her linen napkin in her water glass and looked at me with a beautiful smile as she dotted her dress. “Oh, it’s nothing,” she said. Princess Diana reinvented her Sloane Ranger, Miss Prim style to high voltage glamour with the help of the late Anna Harvey of @britishvogue . The defining moment: that short little black dress she let show her sexy cleavage at Graydon Carter’s reception in London. She redefined her liberated sexy princess style with a little black vampy dress by a Greek female designer when she arrived at Graydon Carter’s Serpentine Gallery benefit in June 1994. In fact Diana used fashion as revenge armour to battlethrough the tsunami of pain and hurt she suffered from her disastrous marriage. As she was the People’s Princess, she evolved her personal style into one of great elegance. She made fashion work for her; fashion did not define her. She was high fashion. #Vogue#CFDA#airmail #thecrown #princessdiana #graydoncarter #lbd #princessofwhales #thechiffontrenchesLikes : 22018

Caption : It was the golden age of style. Diana Vreeland’s legendary Met show, in December 1983: Yves Saint Laurent’s great l25 year retrospective. I got to escort Iman, who decided a giant mohawk was only fitting for her black couture Alaia dress. The dress was flown over from Paris, just for the evening. The inset panels had glitter that moved inside chiffon windows as she walked. Iman, decided to get dressed in my apartment, a small tiny, duplex at 1 Astor Place, downtown. That was her floor length fur I am carrying, not mine. Iman’s neck looked like a selfie stick. I think I looked like Jay-Z, a young Jay-Z. The couture dress went back to Alaia for his archives. I remember Paloma Picasso showed up in couture draped velvet by St.Laurent and Jacqueline de Ribes, in YSL plumes and velvet. Style was different then. #thechiffontrenches #iman #vogue #themet #cfda #mondaymood #makeitfashion #jayz #ysl #palomapicasso #alaiaLikes : 21206

Caption : André Throwback: The moment in time, waiting alone, in the basement of the Louvre, for a Valentino show to begin. I am wearing, a beautiful gray twill Chanel jacket with brass buttons and four pockets, designed just for me by Karl Lagerfeld. It was the second jacket he made for me in the couture, and at that time, M.Pacquito was chief of tailoring. My turtleneck is English cotton, and my officer trousers with the contrast stripe are from Welsh & Jefferies, Savile Row. It is where the English Royals go for military dress. I have many trousers like this in every conceivable color and contrast, best ones, evening dress, with big gold braid. The shoes, inspired by a pair of 1930s ski boots in the Hermès archives, Paris. I loved them so much, simply because they had red shoelaces, and still have them in my Paris archives closets in North Carolina. That was when I felt like life was all sunshine, and very few dark clouds. I did make it into the Intrenational Best-Dressed Hall of Fame. Look at how I look, what a grand and elegant giraffe, if I had to compare to another creature. #valentino #hermes #paris #welshandjeffries #thechiffontrenches #armani #amyfinecollins #tbtLikes : 19223

Caption : The most camp and completely over-the-top photo organized by the late Tony Snowdon, who died at the age of 86 in 2017. We were in Rome for Tina Brown’s Vanity Fair, to do the entire Fendi sisters, the legendary fur dynasty in 1987. There were five competitive sisters at that time. And we had to make them laugh to break up the seriousness of it all. Snowdon came from London and he was one of the best photographers. Totally polite and correct. He was married to Queen Elizabeth II’s sister Princess Margaret. Snowdon is featured in series 2 of The Crown. We were great friends and bonded immediately. I loved working with Tony because he always insisted on proper lunch, with a set table and polished silver at his home. He suddenly felt the camp moment to lighten the shoot and thrust himself and me in these lynx coats to the ground. Today, this would not be possible. Camp. This is definition of high camp. Roy Strong, landscape architect, director of the V&A museum in London, and the director of the National Portrait Gallery, wrote of his friend Snowdon, in his diaries: Scenes and Apparitions. “Tony Snowdon seems to like someone in attendance.” He was 67 years old (and still full of vitality and energy) in 2000 when Strong wrote in his diary about supper at his elegant home. “All his intelligence and sharpness of eye and observation were intact.” So was his wry sense of humor. #thechiffontrenches #thecrown #fendi #fur #brrrr 🥶❄️ @miltongendelphotographsLikes : 18920

Caption : It’s Kaiser Karl (Lagerfeld) and Andre (the tall skinny beanstalk (Leon Talley) in 1977, at the legendary wedding ball of the late @ysl muse, Loulou de la Falaise, to Thadee Klossowski. Paris, on the ile du bois, a special evening where I flew over to Paris, and Karl and I went together. We were on the official list of invited guests sent out by the house of YSL. Karl’s love of his life, the late Jacques de Bascher was not invited. He caused the complex rupture of friendship between Karl and Yves. He dangled his dazzling sexual chemistry on a tightrope in front of Yves; and Karl seemed amused by it all. Lagerfeld and I were in our second year of friendship. When we met, through Andy Warhol, in May , 1975, we got on like fireworks in a spectacular display. Lagerfeld was way ahead of everyone, even then, we climbed into a high Range Rover as a luxury sedan to go to the ball, which lasted until dawn. Lagerfeld, resplendent and I, in a hand me down custom made Halston white dinner jacket, and a cotton kerchief carrying my evening stuff, ( a comb and a mini camera) to catch the likes of Bianca Jagger , in a Zandra Rhodes crinoline, where Yves stood her against a wall and decorated with fresh palm fronds, or where I missed all the decadence, going on, on the outer edges (drugs, sexual dalliances! hetero and homo). I flew over coach to Paris, and stayed in the late Joel LeBon’s flat where Picasso once lived. Tina Chow, came over for the wedding , wearing her favorite Fortuny silk dresses wrapped around her throat as a muffler to the gay Club Sept. What was so wonderful about going out with Lagerfeld in 1977: he was a rising star in the fashion galaxy, designing for Chloe, the luxury ready-to-wear French house and Fendi. I was on a fast track , speed dial, tutorial learning everything from Karl about Eighteenth century France: style, art, design, fashion, arts de vivre. Everything about Karl was exceptional, and elegant. There was nothing seedy, or vulgar, nothing perverse, then or ever, during our near four decades of friendship. Those were the great days of my youth. #wwd #thechiffontrenches #karllagerfeld #vogue #dvf #andywarholLikes : 18343

Caption : I submit the Vogue cover, of our historically and monumentally, first black and immigrant Vice-President elect Kamala Harris: Its GREAT. JUST GREAT! GREAT. She selected her personal wardrobe choices. Her work uniform with her ubiquitous Converse sneakers is aspirational. I predict its going to set a trend for all young women all over the world, are going to dress like Kamala Harris. Not everyone evolves wishing to be a screen star, or a music vixen, or a Kardashian beauty empress. There are girls who will see in this cover, something wonderful. Black photographer @tylersphotos , comes from a universe that is new. He is not aligned with the titans of @vogue photographers before him: Avedon, Penn, and the current hero Annie Lebowitz. His work must be seen through the prism of 2021. We are after all dealing with serious issues: the global Pandemic, the sudden horror of domestic terrorism. Both the digital and the print covers are superb. Knitting controversy is utterly ridiculous. I worked on Vogue over three decades. I was chosen by Anna Wintour to do the first profile for our legendary and brilliant, African-American First lady, Michelle Obama. For months, the Vogue team took every moment of organizing the shoot with gravitas. Tonne Goodman styled the cover and the shoot. I wrote the piece. Excellence is required and while fashion is always the core issue ,yet the cultural pendulum swings. After all, no one is wearing a stiletto everyday during COVID . Madame Vice-President-elect has a lot of work to do. And she is not thinking every day about how she is looking. Her mere strength, her determination and her goals to work for all Americans is foremost. A simple black jacket, a tee shirt, a simple strand of pearls, and her beautiful hair, her smile, her warmth suggests all the elegance one desires. Everyone is trashing that pink and green background. It is symbolic that Tyler Mitchell would use that to express her Madam vice president admiration for her sorors of the AKA at Howard U. Take me down. Clapback at me on social media. All I can say is Anna Wintour is not abdicating. And I wish I were there, at Vogue, to celebrate w/ the team.Likes : 18304
