Béla Fleck Instagram - You never know what you’ll find at the Library! In this case, it was an unidentified piece written by George Gershwin for the banjo. And @belafleckbanjo was kind enough to play it for us! Enjoy. 🎵❤️
Béla Fleck Instagram - On May 19, 2013 my son Juno was born—three weeks early.  I was across the country, in California and couldn’t get home til early the following morning. I took the red eye from San Fran, with a layover in Dallas. I was sitting in Dallas under the fluorescent lights around four in the morning, waiting for the first flight to Nashville, seriously bummed to have missed the birth, when it occurred to me to pull out my banjo and write a birthday tune to bring home to him. And this tune, based on the syllables of his name, popped out very quickly. I showed it to Chick and it quickly developed into a very playful tune. One of my fondest memories is of Chick sitting at the piano with Juno in his lap, jamming together. He figured out how to grow the budding three finger idea into an elegant, beautiful and exciting new language. And something about hearing his amazing musicality and sound for the first time had the power to instantly convert one to a lifelong banjo person. My homage to the legendary composer George Gershwin is out today, 100 years to the day that he premiered the piece at Aeolian Hall in New York City. Béla Fleck Instagram - I first became aware of George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue as a youngster growing up in New York City. My Uncle Steve loved to take me and my big brother, Louie, to see old movies at the Thalia on West 95th Street, just a few steps off of Broadway. One day, Uncle Steve took us to see the film Rhapsody in Blue. It had a huge impact on me and I became a fan of Gershwin and his composition from then on. I had never heard anything like it – it was love at first listen. My newest album expands and explores Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue by paying tribute to the legendary composer while redefining an American classic—just in time for its centennial. Available February 12, a hundred years to the day Gershwin premiered the work at Aeolian Hall in New York City, my Rhapsody in Blue album includes three variations: “Rhapsody in Blue(grass)” performed by My Bluegrass Heart (@sierradawnhull, @michaelclevelandfiddle, @bryansuttond28, @markschatzmusic, @justinmosesmusic); “Rhapsody in Blue(s)” with @sambushband, @jerrydouglas, @victorwooten; and the classic orchestration, but with banjo featured instead of piano, performed by the @vasymphony and conducted by @ejacobsenmusic. The set also features Gershwin’s “Rialto Ripples” and “Unidentified Piece for Banjo,” an unrecorded and unreleased gem discovered at the Library of Congress. We have here another cool look at Chick Corea, at the different ways that he can play that we wouldn’t have had. There’s a lot of great Chick Corea out there, and this is different. I just feel so lucky to have played with him in such an intimate way, and to have gotten to know him so well. I kept the thought to myself, realizing it was either the greatest idea or possibly the very worst I had ever thought of. Béla Fleck Instagram - Here are some "ReFlecktions" Jen Hughes sent me after the show at @carnegiehall. • The way Béla met Bruce Hornsby and dove deep together into the depths of “The Way It Is” and danced with each other to bring it into a life of its own: a way it has never been played before. It was stunning. It sounded so good; I practically wept. So amazing to see two soulmates create before one’s very eyes - - and with such a beautiful tune. • Similarly, with Zakir Hussain – a Béla brother from another mother. Those two have such a great connection; it just shines and resonates. When they were trading “riffs” with each other, it was so fun for the audience, but also jaw-dropping. Again, witnessing masters at work - - but, also, at play because it appears they so enjoy playing with each other. • The clarinetist! Anat Cohen, for crying out-loud! What a find and such a great executed idea to have her play with you. She is cut from the same cloth - - a rare thing! Her on Juno, in particular, was pure joy in action. • Rhapsody. Rapt: the whole hall! I knew I would love it. I had not seen it live before: just some pieces during some of Béla’s solos, never with a symphony. It was striking how much I loved hearing it live with a symphony. It was powerful, riveting, and perfectly delightful! And, absolutely masterful during the part where the symphony fell away and Béla played virtually all of their parts on his banjo alone. Literally breathtaking. Bravo. Also, the talent of those Jacobsen brothers. And, how uplifting to see Edgar Meyer’s son in the orchestra. I suspect Béla has known him all his life. Sweet. Awesome that Béla wore that jacket for the Rhapsody segment of the show. That jacket is the best. • My Bluegrass Heart. I will never get enough of it. Legendary playing by all. Slippery Eel. Whoa! I think I broke a sweat it was moving so fast. Béla slayed it. Rhapsody in Blue(grass) was to die for. The ever-beautiful Big Country. My Uncle Steve loved to take me and my big brother, Louie, to see old movies at the Thalia on West 95th Street, just a few steps off of Broadway. One day, Uncle Steve took us to see the film Rhapsody in Blue. It had a huge impact on me and I became a fan of Gershwin and his composition from then on. I had never heard anything like it – it was love at first listen. My newest album expands and explores Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue by paying tribute to the legendary composer while redefining an American classic—just in time for its centennial. Caption : I first became aware of George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue as a youngster growing up in New York City. My Uncle Steve loved to take me and my big brother, Louie, to see old movies at the Thalia on West 95th Street, just a few steps off of Broadway. One day, Uncle Steve took us to see the film Rhapsody in Blue. It had a huge impact on me and I became a fan of Gershwin and his composition from then on. I had never heard anything like it – it was love at first listen. My newest album expands and explores Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue by paying tribute to the legendary composer while redefining an American classic—just in time for its centennial. Likes : 554Béla Fleck - 519 Likes - Here are some "ReFlecktions" Jen Hughes sent me after the show at @carnegiehall. • The way Béla met Bruce Hornsby and dove deep together into the depths of “The Way It Is” and danced with each other to bring it into a life of its own: a way it has never been played before. It was stunning. It sounded so good; I practically wept. So amazing to see two soulmates create before one’s very eyes - - and with such a beautiful tune. • Similarly, with Zakir Hussain – a Béla brother from another mother. Those two have such a great connection; it just shines and resonates. When they were trading “riffs” with each other, it was so fun for the audience, but also jaw-dropping. Again, witnessing masters at work - - but, also, at play because it appears they so enjoy playing with each other. • The clarinetist! Anat Cohen, for crying out-loud! What a find and such a great executed idea to have her play with you. She is cut from the same cloth - - a rare thing! Her on Juno, in particular, was pure joy in action. • Rhapsody. Rapt: the whole hall! I knew I would love it. I had not seen it live before: just some pieces during some of Béla’s solos, never with a symphony. It was striking how much I loved hearing it live with a symphony. It was powerful, riveting, and perfectly delightful!
