Their eighth studio album, it signaled a departure from the band’s previous records with its orchestral sound and abandonment of car or surf songs. Produced, arranged and largely written by Brian, the album featured over 25 studio musicians, and showcased more refined performances, denser and richer arrangements, slower tempos, longer structures, and influences drawn from Phil Spector and Burt Bacharach. Brian Wilson Instagram - This week in 1964, The Beach Boys released “I Get Around,” backed with ‘Don’t Worry Baby.” It became their first chart-topping hit, as well as America’s first number-one hit by a homeland group since November 1963 in the middle of Beatlemania. Fleetwood Mac’s Lindsey Buckingham called it one of the great A and B sides of a 45 and said “I Get Around” is just masterful with the key modulations and breakdowns that repeat and just so sophisticated. Regarded as one of the first true concept albums, the songs relate to the experiences of a typical Southern Californian teenager. Produced and largely written by Brian, the album featured his most complex arrangements to date. The album reached number 4 in the U.S. and “I Get Around” became the band’s first number-one hit. Brian later cited the album as a “turning point” for the band, and his first LP that could compete against Phil Spector and the Beatles. The majority of the instrumentation was provided by the band members themselves, with studio musicians on select tracks. Classics included “I Get Around,” “All Summer Long,” “Hushabye,” “Little Honda,” “Wendy,” “Girls on the Beach” and “Don’t Back Down,” among others. What’s your favorite?

Directed by Brent Wilson, the film follows Brian and Jason Fine as they drive around Los Angeles and visit locations from Brian’s past. The title comes from “Long Promised Road,” written by brother Carl and Jack Rieley. The film contains footage from recording sessions and interviews with Bruce Springsteen, Elton John, Jim James, Nick Jonas, Taylor Hawkins, Linda Perry, Jakob Dylan and Al Jardine. The critically-acclaimed film also features a new song by Brian and Jim James, “Right Where I Belong,” and was followed by a soundtrack containing never-before-released songs.
