Carl Lentz Instagram - In our country, the human on the left has a different reality than the human on the right. This in inarguable. Its not because the one on the right, my son, has more value than Ahmaud Arbery. He does not. Its because in our country, we have let power structures exist that make your race or color a factor in whether you get to live or die, get justice or nothing even close to that. Its evil. Its tired. Its inexcusable. Its shameful that a black man can get MURDERED while jogging at the hands of white men with weapons and without forceful protest and objection, not be held immediately accountable. Carl Lentz Instagram - The pandemic and all of its challenges are legit. But I have been so grateful for the extended, almost constant time with this little man. We have had time to laugh together, hang together, annoy each other and also learn from each other. That last one there, is major. As a dad, its our job to be somebody these little men can “look up to.” Ive realized that includes apologizing when they do look up, and see something inconsistent with what they have been told. I told a young dad recently that one of the most powerful things you can do as a dad, is own mistakes and apologize. It doesnt weaken your authority, it deepens it. We are bound to make mistakes as parents, especially WHILE QUARANTINED, because..kids are irritating. But also incredible! And its good to know that God is so gracious, He can even use our losses as wins in the parental bigger picture. Carl Lentz Instagram - 2017: I remember preaching about my definition of this subject and struggling to believe that people really had a problem even acknowledging “white privilege” might exist. It wasnt that the concept cant be confronting to some. All the good stuff is! It was how dismissive, how defensive and how divisive even the conversation about it would become. 2020? Although some still outright reject this notion, I think far more people are starting to see the reality of this country we all love so much. Humbly “considering” things that make you uncomfortable has to become a habit in these times. It does not make you weak. It does not mean you pander. It does not even mean you “agree.” It does mean, you love people enough to SEARCH FOR WAYS THAT MAY HELP BRING PEOPLE TOGETHER AND SEEK UNDERSTANDING. This was not “popular” then. And it’s not popular now. Regardless: It is a privilege to use my privilege to talk about privilege so someday we all can stand on equal footing. #occupyallstreets

Carl Lentz Instagram - Our marriage is a miracle and an example of God’s grace and redemptive power. AND…Laura and I have realized that redemption in a situation like this doesn’t always look the same.

Sometimes, it means someone who has been betrayed leaves and never looks back to stay healthy. Marriage can become an idol, which is dangerous. People who make the hard choice to walk away from a toxic marriage may feel like failures, but that’s simply not true.

Laura is a hero to me, not because she stayed with me, but because she prioritized her health and relationship with God. I’m grateful that included me and our marriage! But for us, the goal is not just a shiny marriage—it’s healthy lives. A healthy marriage is a byproduct of that. I love and support marriage; it’s a great and godly thing. But Jesus didn’t die for marriage. He died for people. Our culture sometimes prioritizes preserving marriage over the individuals in it, which is wrong.

I will celebrate my marriage with no apologies and never take a sunset photo for granted. If you’ve been through betrayal and heartbreak and your story didn’t include a sunset picture, you are not “less than.” There will be more sunsets in your future, with someone safe and healthy. Nothing should rob you of your joy or your relationship with God. If anyone shamed you for doing what’s right to save your soul, remember: their opinion doesn’t matter, but you do. All our roads are broken, yet they can still lead to beauty.

This woman lost her hijab mid play, and her opponents stopped playing and surrounded her along w/ her teammates until she could put it back on. Just another reminder that it is always ok to be kind. Some of these women probably didn’t personally share the same reverence for that hijab yet that didn’t matter. Compassion tends to have that impact on all us... #hoperemains #occupyallstreets

Carl Lentz Instagram - Today, marks 65 years since the murder of EMMIT TILL. He was a 14 year old boy who was kidnapped, beaten, mutilated and murdered by two white men. He was falsely accused of “whistling” at a white woman. The two men charged with his murder were acquitted by a jury who deliberated less than an hour. Before her death, the woman who accused him admitted she lied and recanted her story. Some believe Emmits murder was the true catalyst for the civil rights movement in america. To understand where our country currently is, we have to understand where it’s BEEN. Today in washington, thousands have gathered to march, to protest, to demand racial justice and police reform. For as much progress our country has made, the current pain and desperation and exasperation of so many citizens should motivate us all keep pushing. My prayer is that we can trade “progress” for radical upheaval and meaningful, supernatural, permanent CHANGE. If I was not a follower of Jesus, I would be doubtful and discouraged. But because I am? From 2010 to 2020, Carl was the founder and leader of Hillsong, a faith-based community in New York City. At their height, nearly 10,000 people attended Hillsong’s gatherings on weekly basis, which is unprecedented in a city like New York.

Due to their success, both Carl and Hillsong NYC became a fixture in the mainstream media. But in the fall of 2020, Carl’s world came crashing down. He stepped down from Hillsong as news of an extramarital affair came to the surface.

In the following months, the media coverage was brutal, and Carl’s downfall ended up being one of the most covered stories of that year. With both his professional and personal life in shambles, Carl vanished from the public eye for nearly four years.

Until now.

Outside of bathroom breaks, this conversation with Carl is completely unedited and unfiltered. You will see Carl at his most vulnerable. We go deep into his past, including his childhood, coming to NYC and his rise to fame, taking an honest look at how that all contributed to his downfall.

Whether you were familiar with Carl before, or this is the first time, this episode will help you make better sense of some really tough questions.

Why is there so often a disconnect between someone’s public life and private life? How is it possible to preach a message you believe is true, but continually fall short of that standard yourself? How should we frame our own spirituality when people we once respected have a very public downfall?

My choices, and the road toward recovery taught me how helpful it is to have people share vulnerably the impact of their bad choices, the pain they caused, and the pain they suffered that led them to make those choices, and what they’ve discovered can be helpful and healing. My hope is that in sharing those things from my story and asking others to share theirs, it will be helpful, hopeful and healing. I’m thankful for where we are today. To be confident of the future, content in the present and healed enough to speak to the past is miraculous. If we can make it, anybody can…thank you for all the love and support!

Especially in relationships, we tend to give attention and time to what is a problem and don’t adequately thank or acknowledge people in our lives that ARE ACTUALLY HELPFUL AND CONSISTENT! Birthdays and holidays cant be the only time we let ppl know they are loved. I think #faithfulfriendfriday should be a thing. So today, I want @anthonypjdavis to know how much I love him! The first 3 people I met when we landed in Brooklyn over 10 years ago were @deeveekashi @djclue (who I thought was R&B legend Ginuwine, initially) and @anthonypjdavis in that order. Thankfully all 3 are still family to me and PJ is one of the most loyal, low maintenance, creative, deeply compassionate people I have ever known. He is “true New York” born and raised in QUEENS and has taught me, “true VIRGINIA” so much about this city and the people in it over the years. He also saved my life one night at a club, but that story is for another day! Thank you PJ, for being a faithful friend. I love and appreciate you and this family is better because of you..

You know, the sentence that means “BLACK LIVES MATTER” and is not owned by any particular group or organization, perfectly reasonable and logical to say, no matter how many people try to convince you that somehow saying this sentence makes you a marxist endorsing, anti police, left leaning liberal loving, demonically powered and politically motivated activist pseudo warrior. It does not. Those people have always been wrong, and saying “BLACK LIVES MATTER” will always matter. #blacklivesmatter

Carl Lentz Instagram - Juneteenth: BLACK INDEPENDENCE DAY. ..this day needs to hold as much significance for all Americans as it does black Americans. Before this year, Ive heard from many people that had no idea this day even existed or mattered at all. That sheds light on our selective American history and where our culture places honor. On sunday @hillsongnyc we will take a moment to talk about this day and that is a good thing. The problem is that its the first time we have ever done that. Which makes what we say, that black lives matter, inconsistent with what we do or in this case have done. And when you find hypocrisy, intended or not, in your church or your government or your life you only have two options: own it and change it, or ignore it and explain it away. Its been more than 100 days since this EMT worker, a servant of the community, was killed in her own house. None of the 3 men who killed her have been arrested. As we all can agree that this is an egregious, sad and unjust situation we can still work towards justice even though the headlines are slowly shifting again to other news. If you have 5 min today, you can call 502-735-1784 to peacefully demand justice for this woman and her family. This actually WORKS, for those skeptical. Leading this church has been an honor in every sense of the word and it is impossible to articulate how much we have loved and will always love the amazing people in this church. When you accept the calling of being a pastor, you must live in such a way that it honors the mandate. That it honors the church, and that it honors God. When that does not happen, a change needs to be made and has been made in this case to ensure that standard is upheld. Laura and I and our amazing children have given all that we have to serve and build this church and over the years I did not do an adequate job of protecting my own spirit, refilling my own soul and reaching out for the readily available help that is available. When you lead out of an empty place, you make choices that have real and painful consequences. I was unfaithful in my marriage, the most important relationship in my life and held accountable for that. This failure is on me, and me alone and I take full responsibility for my actions. I now begin a journey of rebuilding trust with my wife, Laura and my children and taking real time to work on and heal my own life and seek out the help that I need. I am deeply sorry for breaking the trust of many people who we have loved serving and understand that this news can be very hard and confusing for people to hear and process. I would have liked to say this with my voice, to you, in person because you are owed that. But that opportunity I will not have. So to those people, I pray you can forgive me and that over time I can live a life where trust is earned again. To our pastors Brian and Bobbie, thank you for allowing us to lead, allowing us to thrive and giving us room to have a voice that you have never stifled or tried to silence. Thank you for your grace and kindness especially in this season, as you have done so much to protect and love us through this. We, the Lentz family, don’t know what this next chapter will look like, but we will walk into it together very hopeful and grateful for the grace of God..

Caption : Our time at HillsongNYC has come to an end. This is a hard ending to what has been the most amazing, impacting and special chapter of our lives. Leading this church has been an honor in every sense of the word and it is impossible to articulate how much we have loved and will always love the amazing people in this church. When you accept the calling of being a pastor, you must live in such a way that it honors the mandate. That it honors the church, and that it honors God. When that does not happen, a change needs to be made and has been made in this case to ensure that standard is upheld. Its not because the one on the right, my son, has more value than Ahmaud Arbery. He does not. Its because in our country, we have let power structures exist that make your race or color a factor in whether you get to live or die, get justice or nothing even close to that. Its evil. Its tired. Please be mindful today, that the other three men that murdered GEORGE FLOYD, ARE STILL FREE. This is not going to go away. To the people trying to demonize others, for speaking out against racial injustice and police brutality, you will not win. To the people who are more concerned with politically correct photos and statements, than they are RACISM DESTROYING GENERATIONS in our world, you will not win. Save your comments, search your heart. Drop your old, tired way of thinking and renew your mind. This makes you uncomfortable, and I’m glad. We have all been too comfortable for too long. For the people in the way back: demanding greater accountability of our police, IMMEDIATELY, demanding justice for all, IMMEDIATELY, does not make a single person anti-police. Countless GOOD police men and women are yelling THE SAME THING. You just dont want to heart that. I’m not going to bring that FACT up again, personally. Your narrative is tired, its wrong and it is one of the factors that has perpetuated this exact thing. Its made people, its made “pastors” afraid to speak out. That day is done. Looting helps nothing. Violence, is not the way forward. The loss of ANY LIFE, any police officer is devastating and absolute tragic. It is also NO MORE DEVASTATING THEN FREDDIE GRAY. OR SANDRA BLAND. OR GEORGE FLOYD. LETS BE EQUALLY OUTRAGED.
