Carlo Traversi Instagram - Sky V12/13/14? When the mid-Summer temps 🥵 roll into the Northern Hemisphere it’s hard to not wish I was climbing some nice blocs in South Africa but it just wasn’t in the cards this year. Cool to see all the photos and videos popping up from this season, so I figured I’d pull this one out of the archives. Never thought I’d do this problem due to the massive first reach but a double clutch to the crimp provided a path forward. There’s always a way. @blackdiamond @blackdiamond_climb @theboulderfield @frictionlabs
Carlo Traversi Instagram - Another throw back from many years ago bouldering in Australia. This one is called Massive Dynamic V11 and it’s an amazing jump established by @nalle_hukkataival. We walked by it on one of my first climbing days that trip and I knew I had to give it some efforts. I quickly got the distance and knew it was possible. A few tries later I almost stuck it but ripped off at the peak of the swing catching my foot in the tree and turning me upside down. Took a few more attempts to get over the fear of that happening again but eventually connected and took it to the top. Good times in OZ. It’s a bummer these areas are all closed to climbing now. Hopefully someday the access issues can be resolved. @philthyl with the capture. @paulrobinson87 and @fernandojimenez_ on the spot. #bouldering @theboulderfield @blackdiamond @blackdiamond_climb
Carlo Traversi Instagram - When you’re feeling good enough to rip holds off the wall and then you actually rip a hold off the wall…🫣.

Carlo Traversi Instagram - Another angle of this jump from the ice caves. Felt impossible until I sorted some higher feet and then could do it on repeat 🔁. Good crew energy that day 🙌🏻. #independencepass #icecaves #bouldering @blackdiamond @theboulderfield
Carlo Traversi Instagram - Last one from the Ice Caves. The incredible features of Cobra Commander V10. Really enjoyed the mantle move on this one. Rare style for Colorado. @blackdiamond @blackdiamond_climb @theboulderfield #independencepass #bouldering
Carlo Traversi Instagram - BD Athlete Carlo Traversi has put up the FA of The Dark Side (V16/8C ) in Yosemite, establishing what is now the hardest boulder in the valley.

“This past weekend I climbed one of my lifetime projects in Yosemite.  I call it a lifetime project because when I started trying the line, it seemed so unfeasible that I imagined it taking a lifetime to finish.  More importantly, it's such an inspiring line that I accepted the fact that I’d keep trying it for the rest of my life regardless of the mounting failures.

It sits smack in the middle of Camp 4 on the left side of the Thriller boulder.  It was there when Ron Kauk made the first ascent of Thriller in 1984 and when Jerry Moffatt made the first ascent of The Force in 1991.  It was there in 2003 when I first saw the boulder, incapable of climbing either of those legendary lines.  I couldn’t see it until 2013 on my first trip back to the Valley after a long stint away.  Then it popped right out of the wall and I haven’t been able to take my eyes off it since.

Over the last 7 years I’ve put 50 sessions into making this dream into a reality.  I’ve quit a few times, only to be dragged back in the following year.  It’s definitely my most difficult climb and the most work I’ve put into anything in my personal climbing.  It’s called “The Dark Side” and I’m suggesting V16 for the grade.”

Carlo Traversi Instagram - “The constant pressure on your feet turns into a dull numbness making you question every foot placement. Your toes start to press through the rand rubber and slowly curl over the outsole. As your heels drift upward you can feel your toenails taking more and more of the weight. Clawing to stay on.”

Carlo Traversi Instagram - Shuhari V13, Skyland Boulders. Tried this one a few years back and got close but the summer heat won. Made a quick stop this past trip before driving back home to CA and managed to finish it off. Even though it was still really warm, I got lucky with some late afternoon cloud cover. Wonderful climb in a beautiful location above Crested Butte. @blackdiamond @blackdiamond_climb @theboulderfield @frictionlabs #bouldering
Carlo Traversi Instagram - Pretty rare to find an all points off double clutch dyno to two crimps on granite. Well, last Spring the boulder hound himself @jwebxl found just that with Old Man Winter V14. I was stoked to pull together a second ascent a few days after he floated the first. This boulder is only climbable in the Spring when the snow level is high enough to create a landing. Adds some pressure to get it done as the snow starts melting! Full uncut on my YouTube. Link in bio. @blackdiamond @blackdiamond_climb @frictionlabs @theboulderfield
Carlo Traversi Instagram - I've always enjoyed pushing myself in bouldering, especially on climbs that are not my style. While I tend to do well with dynamic climbing, Booka Booka Booka, a V13 in Moe's Valley, has this massive span move on it that's at the absolute limit of my reach. It would have been easy to write it off and find something better suited to me, but instead it became this ideal space for me to explore my abilities at the absolute limit of my physical constraints. Everything had to line up perfectly for a send and usually those are the most worthwhile.
Carlo Traversi Instagram - Couple of my favorite jumpy moves from @theboulderfield the last few months. Most of them from the @tbfmasters series. The first clip is a move that I set for The Greatest Flasher that was just a bit too low percentage for a “flash only” competition so I reused the idea for The Modern Climber (2nd clip). After almost 20 years of route setting I still feel like a kid in a candy shop playing around with interesting ways of moving on the wall. @blackdiamond @frictionlabs @walltopia
Carlo Traversi Instagram - Midnight Lightning… still one of the best after all these years. I’ve probably climbed this one well over 500 times now and it never really gets old. #yosemitebouldering @blackdiamond @frictionlabs @theboulderfield

Carlo Traversi Instagram - This Earth Day, support the critical work of @accessfund to protect America’s climbing!

In addition to our many years of #BDemployee volunteer days, we recently sent two of our athletes along with them—@carlodenali and @connor.herson. Over the course of 3 days, our team helped the Access Fund Conservation Team build a trail to the Sparks Wall in beautiful Indian Creek that both protects the environment and ensures future access to climbing.

But it doesn’t stop there. Far from it. More hours, more volunteers, and more dollars are needed to support Access Fund and their efforts to better climbing for all.

Support by donating or volunteering at an Adopt-a-Crag or Trail Day event at the link in our bio!
Carlo Traversi Instagram - Back in Colorado for a quick trip has me reminiscing on days past in Upper Upper Chaos. Flying Piñata V12 is one of my favorites with this unique dyno to a mailbox slot above an ever disappearing bank of snow. After the recent rock slide in the canyon this past summer, it seems this problem is possibly buried forever 🙁, but I will always have the memory of finally latching that slot, solo, high up in the canyon, in a tiny bubble of light amidst the night. #bouldering @blackdiamond @theboulderfield @frictionlabs @blackdiamond_climb
Carlo Traversi Instagram - Magic Line 5.14. All gear placed on lead.

Learned a lot from this one. Finding peace in a near constant state of tension. Moving softly while maintaining that tension. Trusting the granite, testing its limits of friction. Accepting a new feeling of flow. Imagining my feet are like the roots of a tree, grounded in each position. Then ripping them up and pressing them down again. Over and over. Just keep moving. No thinking, just moving. Seeing it through. Demanding perfection.

Much thanks to everyone who I’ve shared the day with at this line over the years. We are lucky to have these places to test ourselves.

Carlo Traversi Instagram - Going to start dropping the rest of the uncuts from Spring in Swiss on my youtube, but here’s a start. Manson 8A. Climbed this one on my first trip in 2010 but didn’t get any footage of it. It’s truly one of the best out there and a joy to repeat.

Carlo Traversi Instagram - Back on the route setting grind @theboulderfield the last few weeks. Over 20 years of exploring climbing movement from the creation side and still finding plenty to learn. Loving every minute of it. Really happy with the quality, consistency, and variety of problems we’ve been able to maintain at the gym over the last 6 years. And I probably don’t talk about it enough, but I do think that our Black Circuit is probably the most difficult and varied (in terms of style) collection of indoor boulders in America.

We are also looking for a new Head Route Setter (I’m currently filling in for the time being). We are specifically looking for someone experienced who can take our current program to the next level. Hit me up if you think that’s you.
Carlo Traversi Instagram - Smarmy conditions? Try this little bouldering tip from BD Athlete @carlodenali. Find a rock in the shade and give it a good squeeze between burns. 🪨👌
Carlo Traversi Instagram - Tierrany V14. Yosemite’s new hardest (but not for long). On that one-two with @jwebxl. Brushed this thing up in 2013, but didn’t start giving serious efforts until end of 2019. Finally sorted out the bottom business with Jimmy a few weeks ago...crew vibes for the win. He found his way to the top and I followed a few tries later. This ones a really atypical Yos bloc, less trickery and more iso power on decent holds. Reminds me of Swiss, except for the HP40 sloper top out 😳. Photo by @jwebxl. @blackdiamond @fiveten_official @frictionlabs
Carlo Traversi Instagram - To interrupt your daily dose of the hard hard, paddle dynos, memes and “a muerte” sends take a moment to celebrate one of the best out there. This one’s a personal favorite and definitely in my Top 5 for the grade worldwide.

Höhenrausch 7B in Magic Wood, CH

I climbed it for the first time in 2010 and after many trips to Magic Wood I never miss a chance to pull on those crisp edges. This clip was from a few weeks back.

Carlo Traversi Instagram - When Life Gives You Lemons (Sit) V13/14 - Barely pulled this one off last week in near 70 degree temps after punting the top section 3x…I like to call it “training”. Really nice climbing on this one despite being a bit contrived (you can climb the right hand crack and it’s probably V8). #bouldering #independencepass @blackdiamond @theboulderfield
Carlo Traversi Instagram - I’ve always been drawn to climbs that have both historical significance and an air of mystery surrounding them. In today’s day and age, that combination is getting harder to come by, with every piece of stone captured a million ways and cast out into the daily feed without a moments thought. While this sharing of information satisfies our immediate arm chair curiosity, it has the potential to rob us of a real experience complete with the trials and tribulations of understanding something for yourself. In American climbing, there is no route more shrouded in mystery than @tommycaldwell ‘s Flex Luther at The Fortress of Solitude. He made the First Ascent in 2003, proposed it as the first 5.15 in America and save for a couple snaps from @timkemple, there’s nearly no information about the route. Over the years, whispers of broken holds and unclimbable choss have dominated the narrative, but I always found that information to be speculative and incomplete. It continued to draw me in, to discover the truth for myself. Finally this year, I decided to put everything into climbing Flex. I spent a month in the Spring sorting the moves but was thwarted by wet holds and a lack of partners. I returned at the beginning of October to continue my efforts. It’s been a long month of hot days, wet days and everything in between, but finally yesterday I was able to clip the chains on one of my dream routes. It’s definitely the hardest thing I’ve climbed on a rope so far.

The whole process has been captured on film and I’m looking forward to telling more about this story in a future release. For now, I must extend a massive thanks to everyone who has supported this journey. To my sponsors @blackdiamond @fiveten_official @frictionlabs, my wife @marymeck for always supporting my wild dreams and everyone who ventured up to the cliff this month @honngy @margojain @jon_cardwell @christian_adam_ @ethan_pringle @ryanolsonk @broncopeters @nelsoncarayannis @agrphoto and Jeff Achey @wolverinepublishing .
Looking back I will cherish the days spent at the cliff with such a wonderful collection of talented and supportive people. 📸 @christian_adam_
Carlo Traversi Instagram - 10 years ago, after a sleepless night and recovering from a few too many beverages, I took a drive up Boulder Canyon to throw myself at The Game V15 for a few hours. I started off solo and spent 3 hours failing to reach a previous high point. Nearing the end of my session, some friends started showing up to either support or try the boulder and energy started to build. It was quite the crew consisting of @jonnyhork, @connor.griffith_ , @jon_cardwell , @dave_graham_ , @jwebxl , @jamiecemerson , @greg_mionske , @sticcs. It’s hard to not get swept up in the energy of such a motivated crew of climbers, and despite being really tired, my stoke was renewed. I pulled on, decided to try really hard, and somehow made my way to the top. At the time The Game was considered to be the most difficult problem in the world. I didn’t know about any of that, but nabbing the second ascent helped me build confidence in my capabilities as a climber. It was a significant mental turning point for me and a memory I look back on fondly. Video by @jonnyhork.
Carlo Traversi Instagram - The Erratic Pad is here. “Built for long hikes, built for scrappy landings, and built for the alpine. Built for the modern-day boulderer.”

BD Athlete @carlodenali knows a thing or two about the importance of a crash pad. From Yosemite to Switzerland and beyond, Carlo has spent years scouring the forests and alpine in search of untouched boulders. A first ascensionist to the core, Carlo isn’t afraid to hike miles into the mountains for his next first ascent.

And that’s exactly why he loves the new Black Diamond Erratic Pad.

The all-new Erratic Crash Pad is an ultralight, yet highly durable pad designed to access those far-flung backcountry blocs. Featuring a water-resistant face fabric, a premium foam layup, and a padded, adjustable backpack carry system for the approach, the Erratic is exactly what Carlo has always dreamed of.

Carlo Traversi Instagram - From Dirt Grows The Flowers V15 was established by @dave_graham_ in 2005 and along with The Story of Two Worlds was declared by Dave to be “the new standard” for V15 after many of the first of that grade had been downgraded. As a young climber both of those problems along with Dreamtime were always the top of my list for hard boulders. Turns out it would be the last one for me to complete.

Grade and history aside, I have always been drawn to “From Dirt” because of its uniqueness within the hard boulders of Ticino. The crystal band that forms the lower part of the climb is distinct and powerful and is probably around V13. Once at the sloping lip you reach the real test which is a frustratingly subtle V11 mantle to gain the exit slab. I absolutely love boulders that manage to encapsulate both high end power and tech. Not many manage to do it at an equally high level.

In early 2013, shortly after finishing Story and making the first ascent of The Kingdom V14/15, I fell off the mantle of From Dirt multiple times from the start on my final day in Swiss that year. It’s lingered in my mind ever since.

Returning this year, it was my highest priority. One promising session was followed by one terrible one, and it seemed unlikely that it was going to happen. I waited for a single cold day at the end of the trip and after feeling stiff and tired in my warm up, I pulled on and perfectly executed every move to the top. It was the most weightless I’ve ever felt on the wall and one of the most pure moments I’ve had in climbing. It reminded me of how much I love pushing myself in bouldering. Prop to Dave for being way ahead of the game when he made the first ascent of this one. It still stands as a perfect test piece of hard bouldering and one of my favorite boulders that I’ve climbed.

Carlo Traversi Instagram - Send days at The Fortress are few and far between, but yesterday I had the chance to witness @honngy make the 2nd ascent of Flex Luther, which was established as the first 5.15 in America by @tommycaldwell nearly 20 years ago. Matty put the work in and got it done and it was super inspiring to see him fight through the multiple intricate and bouldery sections of the 100 foot route and finally clip the chains. I was also stoked to tick my hardest belay 😂. We’ve both been waging war on this route over the past year and his ascent has me more motivated than ever to see the process through. My split tip is finally healed up and I’m ready to give some more goes this week! @blackdiamond #liveclimbrepeat
Carlo Traversi Instagram - In the early 2000’s, when I began climbing, Five Ten @fiveten_official was THE brand to be associated with in climbing. With the best athletes, clever and edgy marketing, and the stickiest rubber and most innovative climbing shoes in the industry. The moccasym was my first pair of climbing shoes and when I saw the “Five Fifteenie” ad with @chris_sharma on the First Ascent of Biographie, I knew I had to have the Anasazi Velcro as well. In 2006, my professional relationship with the brand began after they offered me my first sponsorship. For the last 16 years I’ve had a wonderful time working for, promoting, and more recently helping develop shoes with a brand that I truly believed in from day one. Getting to know Charles Cole and all of the passionate employees that have worked for Five Ten over the years is an experience I will cherish forever.

Unfortunately times change and all good things must come to an end. Beginning this year I will no longer be representing Five Ten as an athlete. It’s bittersweet for sure, part of me is still tied to the emotional connection I’ve had with the brand since the beginning, but I also realize that the Five Ten of today is not the same as the Five Ten of yesterday. I’m greatly looking forward to trying out the many different climbing shoes that have entered the market over the past years and also to spend time imagining what the future of climbing shoes might be.

Photos of just a small portion of the shoes I’ve gone through over the years. Some relics in there. Can anyone name all the different models?

Carlo Traversi Instagram - December 2016. Magic Line.

After a few days of efforts I made it through the bottom crux and the slippery mid section but succumbed to a foot slip on the final hard move before the jug. Shortly after this day the weather closed in and I put Magic Line on the back burner. I kept meaning to go back to finish it off but other projects seemed to get in the way. But when you get that close it lingers in the back of your head. Glad I was able to clean up some loose ends this year. Makes it easier to approach the next round of projects with full commitment.

Carlo Traversi Instagram - Magic Line (5.14 trad) video is up! No fluff, just the send footage. Link in bio. Couple cuts to leave out the most boring moments but @kippwagon did an amazing job of capturing the actual send, up close and personal. Pretty crazy to rewatch even for myself. The route requires perfection in the feet and it seems so improbable to make it through without slipping. Thanks to @marymeck for all the cold belays and @christian_adam_ for the killer photos. And much thanks to @blackdiamond for the long time support.

In awe, in so many ways, at what women are capable of. Now we are settling into our new life as a team of three and looking forward to our first adventures with the little one as soon as possible!

Carlo Traversi Instagram - Another shot of Flex Luther 5.15 from @christian_adam_. Really puts the whole wall in perspective. Mostly sampled the easier classics but managed to climb this fun harder one just before hiking back down the hill. A little munchy on the skin, but great movement. Carlo Traversi Instagram - The last few months 📸….

Took a little break from posting. Needed a little reset and time to think about my underlying motivations for sharing. And more importantly the motivations for capturing in the first place. As demand for content grows and supply picks up to meet it, it’s hard to not feel like the things we create become less valuable. More recently I felt the need to hold onto the things I’ve captured so they feel more important and personal. There’s probably some truth to both of those sentiments but they run contrary to community. They can also stifle creativity. Moving forward I would like to start sharing a bit more but I’m unsure of the avenue.

Carlo Traversi Instagram - I’m admittedly not the best at flashing boulders, but I always leave a few to give a proper effort. Been waiting for good conditions on the ultra classic Bang On V12 at Black Mountain for many years and last year it lined up after a long, snowy walk up the road. I was most concerned about the first move, a huge cross over your head to a tricky slot crimp. After that, it seemed pretty reasonable power crimping to the jug at the lip. Check the link in my bio to see how it went…. Thanks to @jonnyhork for the pad help. @blackdiamond @blackdiamond_climb @frictionlabs
Carlo Traversi Instagram - Bat hang swing off double toe jams. A variation on the kneebar twist that @ramrod92 and I set at the @tbfmasters a few years ago where a secure foot position allows you to rotate upside down and almost 360 degrees to allow progress through the problem. Love trying out these ideas @theboulderfield.

Carlo Traversi Instagram - Spent the better part of April and May on the Western Slope of Colorado climbing at a rarely visited cliff called The Fortress of Solitude. I’ve spent many days at this cliff over the years, having climbed Kryptonite 5.14c/d in 2015, made the First Ascent of Mask Off 5.14b/c in 2017 and bolted a new mega line with @jon_cardwell in the winter of 2016. For the amount of days I’ve spent up there, sends are rare due to the difficulty of the climbing and the taxing nature of the approach. I knew going into the trip that focusing on keeping a learning mentality would be the best approach. Absorb, endure, and enjoy the process. My main goal was to try @tommycaldwell ‘s Flex Luther, which he established as the first 5.15 in America in 2003. I tried the route a few days in 2015 and was impressed with the difficulty of the climbing and also the style, which is particularly slow, technical and engaging throughout its entire 100ft. It was a style that I wasn’t accustomed to and still not good at, and I love that fact. I showed up this year in the best route climbing shape of my life and waged war along with @honngy (pictured here) and on a mini trax when I didn’t have a belayer. Progress was slow at first with a lot of seeping holds but about 3 weeks into the trip I had a big breakthrough and climbed from about 6 moves in (just below the low crux) and fell on the last hard move. It felt like a send was imminent but a mixture of warm weather and a lack of belayers in my final week(s) proved to be an insurmountable barrier with my limited time left. So it goes. Overall I really enjoyed my time up at the cliff this Spring, tapping into the limestone sport climbing game after a couple year hiatus. I’ll certainly be back when the weather is prime again! Many thanks to @marymeck for the many belays and to my sponsors for their continued support @blackdiamond @fiveten_official @frictionlabs @theboulderfield

Carlo Traversi - 10.6K Likes - BD Athlete Carlo Traversi has put up the FA of The Dark Side (V16/8C ) in Yosemite, establishing what is now the hardest boulder in the valley.

Wonderful climb in a beautiful location above Crested Butte. @blackdiamond @blackdiamond_climb @theboulderfield @frictionlabs #bouldering

Carlo Traversi - 6.5K Likes - I've always enjoyed pushing myself in bouldering, especially on climbs that are not my style.

Höhenrausch 7B in Magic Wood, CH

I climbed it for the first time in 2010 and after many trips to Magic Wood I never miss a chance to pull on those crisp edges. This clip was from a few weeks back.

Carlo Traversi - 2.4K Likes - I’ve always been drawn to climbs that have both historical significance and an air of mystery surrounding them.

BD Athlete @carlodenali knows a thing or two about the importance of a crash pad.

Carlo Traversi - 2.1K Likes - From Dirt Grows The Flowers V15 was established by @dave_graham_ in 2005 and along with The Story of Two Worlds was declared by Dave to be “the new standard” for V15 after many of the first of that grade had been downgraded.

It still stands as a perfect test piece of hard bouldering and one of my favorite boulders that I’ve climbed. @blackdiamond @blackdiamond_climb @theboulderfield @frictionlabs

Carlo Traversi - 2K Likes - Send days at The Fortress are few and far between, but yesterday I had the chance to witness @honngy make the 2nd ascent of Flex Luther, which was established as the first 5.15 in America by @tommycaldwell nearly 20 years ago.

Carlo Traversi - 1.8K Likes - In the early 2000’s, when I began climbing, Five Ten @fiveten_official was THE brand to be associated with in climbing.

Carlo Traversi - 1.6K Likes - December 2016.

What an incredible experience bringing her into this world and I’m so proud of Mary for her strength and perseverance throughout the lengthy labor and delivery process. In awe, in so many ways, at what women are capable of. Now we are settling into our new life as a team of three and looking forward to our first adventures with the little one as soon as possible!

The ground quickly drops away from the base of the cliff and it causes the exposure to increase exponentially as you progress up the wall.

Moving forward I would like to start sharing a bit more but I’m unsure of the avenue.

And more importantly the motivations for capturing in the first place. As demand for content grows and supply picks up to meet it, it’s hard to not feel like the things we create become less valuable.

A variation on the kneebar twist that @ramrod92 and I set at the @tbfmasters a few years ago where a secure foot position allows you to rotate upside down and almost 360 degrees to allow progress through the problem. Love trying out these ideas @theboulderfield.

Carlo Traversi - 1.1K Likes - Spent the better part of April and May on the Western Slope of Colorado climbing at a rarely visited cliff called The Fortress of Solitude.
