Caught red handed, the Presidency has no other option but to now unequivocally step up the transparency, responsibility and accountability with which they lead the process. This COP Presidency will be under public scrutiny like no other ever before. This is a deep challenge and a transformational opportunity for them. The planet cannot afford for them to not step up.
Christiana Figueres Instagram - This is the 'Volkswagen 2015' moment for the #COP28 Presidency. Caught red handed, the Presidency has no other option but to now unequivocally step up the transparency, responsibility and accountability with which they lead the process. This COP Presidency will be under public scrutiny like no other ever before. This is a deep challenge and a transformational opportunity for them. The planet cannot afford for them to not step up.
Christiana Figueres Instagram - There are strong forces at work attempting to convince us that a rapid and just transition would be too difficult, too unpopular or too expensive. It is not so. Our new coalition #Mission2025 comprises some of the world’s largest businesses, networks, cities, regions and individuals, joining to call for governments to raise ambition for the next round of national climate plans (the NDCs due in 2025) to be 1.5°C-aligned. By doing so, we can unlock the momentum needed for this transition to happen at the speed and scale required, and with the equity deserved. This is entirely possible and - as we clearly see from the rising numbers of catastrophic extreme weather events in our news feeds every day - absolutely necessary. Christiana Figueres Instagram - It was a great honor to be awarded @thersaorg Albert Medal Award yesterday and I am deeply humbled to be continuing in the tradition of previous winners such as Marie Curie and Stephen Hawking, celebrated for their innovation, creativity and courage. You may have heard that the RSA Fellows Festival this year takes the theme of COURAGE - a wise choice because I’m sure we can all agree both that it is critical to the moment that we’re living and that it is far too rarely seen in these times. The dictionary defines courage as “the quality of mind or spirit that enables a person, an organization, a nation or a society to face difficulty, danger, pain , fear, threat and not be annihilated by it”. I would add “rather emboldened by it” because that is what we are called for now. It is as simple - and as challenging - as making a conscious choice of not turning away from the threat, but rather metabolizing the understanding of the threat into an effective response, guided by a honed quality of mind. The characteristics of that quality of mind? I would say there are three: 1) Stubborn optimism - not a naive belief that everything will be ok, but rather the gritty determination to stick to our path no matter what the barriers are, because the consequences of not doing so are simply too grave. 2) Openness to other ways of thinking and working because we cannot do this without radical collaboration. 3) Finally, love - a word not much used in the contexts of politics, leadership or climate solutions but ultimately what underpins everything. Only by profoundly reconnecting with love for ourselves, each other and nature, can we move out of numbness to create a different and better world. With heartfelt gratitude to Andy Haldane and all at the RSA - thank you for the honor and for a wonderful evening.

As the world approaches the halfway point in this decisive decade, two things are true at the same time: 1️⃣ The energy transition is in full swing: Costs for clean technologies are plummeting, progress is speeding up every year and fossil fuel demand is dying. 2️⃣ Despite this progress, we’re not moving at the speed required. Next year governments will submit updated national climate plans (NDCs) to the UN - these plans must close the current ambition gap and reflect the progress already underway. 👉 Can we hold both these truths close, so that we can embrace all the feelings and take the action required to get ourselves on track for a cleaner future? 👉 We can. You may have heard that the RSA Fellows Festival this year takes the theme of COURAGE - a wise choice because I’m sure we can all agree both that it is critical to the moment that we’re living and that it is far too rarely seen in these times. The dictionary defines courage as “the quality of mind or spirit that enables a person, an organization, a nation or a society to face difficulty, danger, pain , fear, threat and not be annihilated by it”. I would add “rather emboldened by it” because that is what we are called for now. It is as simple - and as challenging - as making a conscious choice of not turning away from the threat, but rather metabolizing the understanding of the threat into an effective response, guided by a honed quality of mind. The characteristics of that quality of mind? I would say there are three: 1) Stubborn optimism - not a naive belief that everything will be ok, but rather the gritty determination to stick to our path no matter what the barriers are, because the consequences of not doing so are simply too grave. 2) Openness to other ways of thinking and working because we cannot do this without radical collaboration. 3) Finally, love - a word not much used in the contexts of politics, leadership or climate solutions but ultimately what underpins everything. Only by profoundly reconnecting with love for ourselves, each other and nature, can we move out of numbness to create a different and better world. With heartfelt gratitude to Andy Haldane and all at the RSA - thank you for the honor and for a wonderful evening.
