Caption : What does zoo keeping and Gardening have in common you may ask. Well on closer inspection it’s clear to see that we don’t have animal life without plant life. Plants not only provide food and nutrition but they’re also the valuable resources for shelter and habitat, a home for them to feel safe. This week on @gardeningaustralia we are heading to @australiazoo where I get to meet @robertirwinphotography , his mum @terriirwincrikey and some of the passionate zookeepers who share the importance of plants to our animal life, healthy ecosystems and conservation for the future . #zoos #zookeepersLikes : 3836

Caption : I am so lucky to work with incredibly talented people who love what they do. All of our cinematographers have such keen eyes and the way they “see the light” across any given day that we are filming is always a joy to watch from the other side of the lense because they’re constantly taking in the conditions as they change. The photo you see here was taken by Sam Collins @samshootsthings when we were filming at @botanicsydney the other day. We were filming a piece inside one of the glasshouses with lots of different hanging plants creating a particular atmosphere. There were nepenthes and rhipsalis and a host of other special plants that indoor plant loving folk would be frothing over. Can you pick what plant it is ? Sam had finished what we were doing in there, carted some equipment outside, came back in and said “hey stand there” and just snapped this pic. Its a sharer indeed.Lightning in the jar as they say.Likes : 3460

Caption : There’s a lot to be said about stepping out of your comfort zone and diving into the deep end. And that’s exactly what I did last year when I agreed to be part of a three part documentary series called The Hospital : In The Deep End And wow what an experience. Seriously there is so much to unpack about this project which goes to wear this week on Thursday night and then for the next couple of Thursday nights after that. It’s a privilege to be asked to do or get involved with so many different projects and most of the time it’s just impossible for me to fit them in around my usual weekly and monthly schedule. But when I was approached to consider being involved in this reality documentary I barely needed to think about it for more than a second or two because while it may seem on face value that a documentary about a hospital in the health care system is out of my lane, the reality strikes that every single day in every story that I’m fortunate enough to tell, the underlying thread is all about preventative health. The decision was made and all that needed to be managed was the time logistics and this was made very easy because Saint Vincent‘s Hospital is in my neighbourhood and didn’t require a massive amount of travel for me to do the filming that was required. What followed was an incredible access all areas vehicle that allowed me and my fellow cohosts Melissa Leong @fooderati and Samuel Johnson @loveyoursister to drive behind the scenes. We were given a number of hospital departments to dive into observe interact and start to understand all of the healthcare professionals that work in the departments as well as of course the patients and the broader picture. It really set out to showcase the frontline healthcare heroes who work under such incredible pressure but equally it didn’t shy away from the challenging pressures facing the public health system and framing these points alongside the hard work and dedication of the staff and the initiatives and treatments that they are rolling out and developing at Saint Vincent‘s. I’ll share a trailer as a taster of the first episode that screens this Thursday on SBS Australia. Cant wait to see it myselfLikes : 2992

Caption : It’s #WordNakedGardeningDay, which means it’s time for all of us on this beautiful living planet to shed our outer layers of baggage, strip back to our natural state and get into the the garden! Every other year that we’ve done this, we’ve been on the road, taking advantage of the fruits of somebody else’s labour, but here we are, finally at home in our emergent community food forest (which Brenna thinks is due for a prune) wielding some of our own bountiful harvest from this season’s gardening efforts. We’re keen to see what’s going on in your garden on this auspicious day! 😉 #WorldNakedGardeningDay2024 #wngd24 #wngd #permaculture #naked #gardening #foodforest #nude 🌻 For the record, when we’re not frolicking naked in the garden, we’re also building a strawbale & cob house with @growdoit , drawing illustrations about regenerative living via @brenna_quinlan and running a permaculture funk band called @formidableveg which will be touring east next month!Likes : 2504

It’s a party where, instead of stars and spectators, EVERYONE creates the vibe together. @activatetreeplanting does just this – and to top it off, they plant trees while they party! Over 50,000 of them, to be precise! In a time where we need #regenerative #climateaction more than ever, this is THE COOLEST model I’ve seen that combines community, carbon-sequestration and FUN in a sustainable-sized festival that is sold-out in minutes every time. Caption : There are so many examples of good intent when it comes to greening our cities. You walk past them all the time and want to share the vision and success. But then there are all those other examples that get close but fall down with one little detail or another that doesn’t get considered. In this case some nice container gardens to green streetscapes but because they’re under an awning they need that regular weekly care and attention because they don’t see any natural rain. Throw on top of that the heat of the road and classic windblown urban environments and they dry out very quickly. Gardens like this need to be programmed into the regular care and maintenance of the premises just like the cleaners. Without that consistency any chance for success is limited. What about wicking beds you say. Well they are an option but again a wicking bed has to be attended to and have its wicking well filled up regularly as well. So the bottom line is that container gardens need regular weekly care. Then Watch em thrive.Likes : 1964

Well my vetiver grass verge garden hedge has been taking advantage of the rain and temperature here in sydney the last few weeks and been growing deluxe. So i gave it a good autumn cutback and shape . Vetiver is the perfect barrier cor my vegie patch as it keeps passing dogs and traffic off the garden but diesnt compete with whats growing because it is deep rooting so i can plant right up to it. And because it grows by clumping and not seed I can simply seperate when it multiplies and replant to thicken the hedge. Thats what i was doing at the end if the time lapse. It also acts as a great little retaining wall and keeps the soil from cascading onto the footpath. A perfect filter / screen plant around drains to capture and settle sediment and runoff. And everything i trim i can drop straight on the garden as a straw mulch #vetivergrassLikes : 1410

This idea has got legs and I see it becoming a staple go to because it is fun for all generations There were so many great children crows in each daily heat and one young rooster girl@l made it to the final. Caption : When you plant a eucalypt, you’re not just planting a single tree. You’re actually planting an ecosystem. – Dr Dean Nicolle OAM 🪲🦋🐛🐦🦎🐨🍄 Eucalypts have enormous biodiversity value, especially as part of our urban forest. They provide food, shelter, and nesting places for many more Australian animals, plants, and fungi than non-native trees can. While common urban wildlife like Brushtail Possums, Rainbow Lorikeets and European Honeybees are happy enough with the resources provided by many garden trees, our more specialist species, like Australia’s unique nectar-feeders, are specifically adapted to rely on and co-exist with our native flora. In our cities, towns, and suburbs, native eucalypts on streets and in gardens are vital habitat stepping stones, linking bigger patches of native bushland and connecting wildlife populations. And where indigenous eucalypts are planted, this effect is multiplied, the trees slotting perfectly into their natural ecosystem. But that hasnt been the case in our family because mum and dad introduced us to them when we were young so they have always had a distinct position on our seasonal family fruit calendar. Have they had a spot on your family fruit run on team Now has been their time to shine and i am very much a fan of the squishy astringent option though i have grown to line the firmer Fuju varieties over the last decade or so. Caption : There something I find incredibly rewarding about pruning fruit trees and at this time of the year its perfect to do a late summer -ish prune in mid autumn. I was talking about this to Alice Zaslavsky on what is our regular sat morning yarn on @abcmelbourne. ThIs lemon tree is down in Melbourne and after what has been a fairly wet summer there is a lot of new growth and even fruit but it was a good time to take off as you can see a lot of the branches that had grown over the roof height onto the roof and were brushing up against the house. I didn’t want to go too hard because there’s still a lot of fruit on the tree and it is not a structural prrune that would take off a lot of the fruit bearing branches for next year. Take this task as a bit of a trim on what is a tree that I won’t give a big prune to for a couple of years. I love lemons and I love pruning them to see the way they respond. There’s a whole basket full of lemons off the prunings along with about another 60 or 70 on the tree so I’m going to juice these and freeze them into cubes. Thank you Lemon tree for being such a provider. #lemontree #backyardfruittrees #growitlocalLikes : 1117

We actually had more than just a couple of bodysurf‘s together on the days when he was in Sydney to film for the project that we were involved with last year.. now he lives in North East Victoria which is not exactly close to a beach but he shares the same passion for body surfing and it’s been a real treat to make sure we get the water whenever he has been in town and late this afternoon was no exception. What’s more it was a double whammy because there’s nothing I love more than a freezing cold swim probably just a freezing cold swim in the rain and that’s exactly what we got. Thanks for being a dolphin Sammy and I look forward to seeing the behind-the-scenes stories that you were involved with along with our fellow cohost Melissa Leong when the first episode of “The Hospital :in The Deep End” airs tonight on @sbs_australia . This is my character design process for a lifelike person character: 1. Get a good photo of the person standing up 2. Trace that photo with a ‘skeleton’ sketch to get the proportions 3. Redraw those same proportions in a bunch of different poses 4. Draw in the details over the top and add colour 🎨 Share this with any artists in your life 💚 What do you think? Does it look like the Costa we know and love? #brennaquinlan #artwithpurpose #artasactivismLikes : 548

At the time the tide was down and there was no water to illustrate how the fish ladder operates. Well here is the fish ladder dry and then with water run ing over it courtesy of ecologist michael who is a regular at the wetalnds weekend . #fishladder #wetlands #mangrovesLikes : 524

As a result of her appetite to learn she has tracked down and applied all sorts of advice and created a garden that is flower field and produce plenty. It is such a pleasure to be able to share her story on @gardeningaustralia. She is a wonderful example of step by step growing a garden-and your experience from scratch. Our urban and even rural development can create blockages for fish to move so this structure gives them a chance to move up and over the obstruction cause by the road which is effectively a dam and blocks passage. Great to see these solutions being used and installed more readily in catchments and on waterways around the country. #fishladders #fishladdersofinstagram #koinmerburracountry @reefcatchments @isaacregionalcouncilLikes : 461

The last few weeks we have been such a pleasure to wake up and not know what new pictures of me are floating around on my social media. Massive massive shout out to everyone who has contributed an artwork for your creativity, playfulness and the time invested in producing your piece and the story thread you have chosen to highlight. The first picture you see here of a very ripped me was produced by a young student on the Gold Coast who was visiting his grandfather during the school holidays and this is what Jordan thinks is behind my overalls. Thanks for pumping up my tyres Jordan. The second image was prepared by his grandad so they both did their art work together which is something that makes me really happy that they made time to spend time together, and that is what matters.. Today is the last day for entries to be submitted and I can’t wait to see what else comes in. Thanks everyone, I am enjoying every piece of art. #bradleyawards #artLikes : 457

Caption : There is always something to see and take away from every garden and it’s one of the things I love the most without question about edible garden trails. This netting structure that you see was created in order to grow brassicas and help keep them free from the cabbage white butterfly laying it’s caterpillars with predictable results. Now the point to note about this particular structure is that it has been designed for the gardener and in this case the gardener is probably about 2m tall or 6ft4” on a wet hair day. Bending down and lifting grow tunnel netting is somewhat more difficult for someone this tall so this modular easily dismantled netting structure was what they came up with. Having such fine netting means that they sometimes will shake other veggies with ladybirds on them into the enclosure should they have a break out in any pests otherwise this modular rotational system is working really well for them. Of course you can always use a slightly less fine netting to allow the pollinators access and the structure itself could also be used with shade cloth or you could even use tunnel housing material and turn it into a mini glasshouse in the off-season. So many options. We can visit this garden and see this structure first hand this coming weekend at the @samfordediblegardentrail 18th/19thmay.Likes : 446

Caption : Gardening in the. climate extremes of Goulburn NSW requires a level of patience and observation in order to slowly but surely reach your growing goals. This is the garden of @b.o.ze.n.a and she is a real role model example of inspiration for anyone who looks at a garden that is growing well and thinks Im not@in that league. Its too hard. Where would I i begin. Well she started just like that with one plant in the ground, then a second, then she dug up some lawn to make the bed wider and then she was addicted. And there is no turning back. What a treat to visit your patch of paradise Bozena. #getgrowing #canyoudoityesyoucanLikes : 439

I did an online class last week for a Finnish permaculture crew and they said ‘oh we love that guy’ 😆 For those outside of Australia, Costa is our biggest celebrity. Which is cool because he’s a gardener and also a really nice guy. He’s half man, half hedge, and is known for being our country’s most recognisable garden gnome. Y’all might have Taylor Swift and Kim Kardashian but we’ve got this guy and we’re pretty stoked with that. Not many people know that I did the illustrations for his amazing book ‘Costa’s World’.
