David Göttler Instagram - Here are some more photos from our recent Nanga Parbat expedition. These are from the lower section of the Schell route, below the ridge at 6000m. In order to avoid the rockfall which started as soon as the sun hit the Rupal face and could be quite intense, we had to do some very early alpine starts. I’m not a huge fan of alpine starts but it’s better to wake up early than to be bowled off the mountain by a rock hurtling at you from above.

David Göttler Instagram - So, you may have guessed that we didn’t make it to the summit of Nanga Parbat. Well here is why; it wasn’t because of bad weather, nor bad conditions. We turned around because I had a bad day. That’s it. I didn’t feel how I knew I needed to feel for a summit day like that. @benjaminvedrines was going strong, and he probably could have done all the work to get us both to the summit, but then what? The descent is not straight down; there’s a long up & down traverse first. No fixed ropes of course, as we’d climbed up with just 60m of rope between us. There was no big track and no other climbers on the route: just Ben and I. That’s the beauty of climbing a route like this in a style like this. The beauty and the cruelty of it. Having a bad day means not getting to the top.
As my great friend Ueli Steck once said: “Don’t epic”.
I thought of his words. I knew if we continued I’d unleash an epic. So we turned around. Thanks Ben for being everything one could want in a climbing partner.

David Göttler Instagram - What should you eat when you’re attempting a big mountain? How do you cook it up there in a tiny tent? It’s actually a bit more tricky than you might think. I’ve tried so many things over the years and in this week’s #MountainMentor episode I share what food and food prep looks like for me right now on a big mountain.
I’m curious to hear what your favourite mountain foods are. Let me know in the comments.

David Göttler Instagram - For me climbing is one of the best ways there is to enjoy time with friends and family. It doesn’t have to be crazy difficult or insanely exposed to be fun and fulfilling. These pictures are from a day last year climbing a few pitches with my 82 year old dad. Days like this are worth their hours in gold.

David Göttler Instagram - I must admit that I have a small obsession with backpacks 😬: they’re just always there, on my back (literally) and it has become a fun challenge to experiment with their design, choose exactly the right one for each adventure and dial out the perfect way of packing on every occasion. Nerdy? yes🤓…but worth it!
In the new #MountainMentor episode on my YouTube channel, I explain all things packing and backpack related. Click the link in the bio to take a look.

David Göttler Instagram - The moment at which you cross from the Rupal side to the Diamir side of Nanga Parbat is a very special one. Looking down the enormous Diamir face, it’s possible to see some tiny dots on the valley floor that are the Base Camp of the normal route. Looking ahead, the endless, undulating traverse stretches before you.
This moment is still vivid in my mind and provides all the motivation I need to get stuck into my training back at home.

David Göttler Instagram - On today’s #MountainMentor episode I talk about my drinking system. Anyone who has done long days up high will know that this is a tricky topic: your drinks can freeze, or maybe you can’t reach them without taking your pack off, but you need to stay hydrated to perform and to stay warm. If you’re interested in seeing how I tackle this on my climbs watch this episode over on YouTube.

David Göttler Instagram - I’ve only ever been here before in winter, but I’m more than happy to see and experience this mountain now in the summer. Will it be easier? I very much doubt it but we shall see. This time I’m with @benjaminvedrines and our main ingredients for this trip are a pure and light alpine style and heaps of motivation. No internet with us this time so I shall look forward to sharing thoughts and images when we are back online in a few weeks.

David Göttler Instagram - Day 4: this was the planned summit day, from our camp at 7400m on the Rupal face, crossing over to the Diamir side, along and up to the summit and back. Again it sounds not so bad in words, but in reality this route is incredibly long, complex and challenging. Everything feels much, much bigger on this mountain despite that it’s not one of the highest 8000m peaks.
Further along the ridge from our camp but at an altitude of about 7400m @tiphaineduperier , #Boris and I crossed over onto the Diamir side of the mountain which is west facing. From this point all you see is the never ending traverse ahead of you, undulating up and down across the upper slopes of the Diamir face. We kept moving for several hours breaking through the snow up to the knee with each step. At about 7550m we decided that with these slow, exhausting conditions it was clear that we didn’t really have a chance. The summit was still hours away, and the way back would be just as relentless and long, with the same small uphills to overcome but in a much more exhausted state. We turned around and even from where we were, it was a long way back to our tents at 7400m on the other side. Judging by how exhausted we were when we got back to camp, it was clear that we made the right decision and I’m incredibly proud of how far we got, how hard we tried and the decisions we made. Far from being disappointed, this experience has galvanised my desire to climb Nanga Parbat in this style. Hopefully one day it’ll work out.

David Göttler Instagram - Trekking season is just around the corner for a lot of people, so in this week’s episode I will share the details of my trekking kit with you.
Just a disclaimer tho: my kit is pretty light and minimalistic, but trekking up the Khumbu, or to a remote base camp, or even a hut to hut trek in the European Alps are all so much more enjoyable with next to nothing in your pack! Don’t you agree?

David Göttler Instagram - #MountainMentorMonday! This time I’m hoping to answer one of the most frequent questions I get asked in the comments of my posts: “Why do I use this face mask?”.
In the old days, I only used to wear a buff…like in the the first photo which was in winter 2013 on Nanga Parbat. Since then I’ve learned how much room for improvement there really was and ever since I use the Airtrim mask (picture #2) like on Everest, I really feel that I perform so much better and I have much less high altitude coughing. Check out episode 2 of my #MountainMentor series for all the details.

David Göttler Instagram - A short, intense adventure is always a good one! @lucienboucansaud and @guillaume_pierrel and I just climbed Cho Polu, 6700m, via the 2011 route by Corominas and Parga. It goes straight up the steep west face, finally joining the S ridge to reach the summit. We took 10 hours from bottom to top moving in the light, alpine style which I love so much. I have wanted to climb this beautiful peak for many years and it did not disappoint!

David Göttler Instagram - As Aristotle said, “Patience is bitter, but its fruit is sweet”.
With goals and endeavours like alpine climbs of himalayan peaks in winter, it’s not so much the patience required in base camp, but the patience required over years and years to hit that elusive sweet spot of weather and conditions. I know how sweet the taste of rewarded patience is, even if I taste it only very rarely, so I am more than happy to be patient.
It’s part of the game and, for me, every bitter little pill to swallow is worth it.

David Göttler Instagram - Today is the last episode in this first season of my MountainMentor series, and it’s all about sleeping (a favourite pastime of mine 😉). I’ll show you which expedition mattress I prefer and why, and explain why I prefer a light thin sleeping bag rather than a big warm one. Hit the link in my bio to watch the episode.

David Göttler Instagram - The base camp on the Rupal side of Nanga Parbat ranks in my top 3 favourite basecamps of all 8k peaks. Take a look at the photos to see why. To be on an 8000m peak climb, yet with a base camp on a beautiful green meadow full of life is both unusual and a treat for the sense. I was reminded of home by multiple groups of visiting donkeys, and reminded of how far into the wild we were when I saw a wolf (3rd slide!) for the first time in my life. It’s a truly beautiful place, that makes this side of the mountain really special, even if it means that the vertical distance to the summit is a galling 4500m!

Despite some very unstable weather so far, we’ve climbed, skied, flew plenty and now just hoping for some more favorable and consistent weather for a summit attempt!

David Göttler - 15.6K Likes - Here are some more photos from our recent Nanga Parbat expedition.

David Göttler - 7.7K Likes - So, you may have guessed that we didn’t make it to the summit of Nanga Parbat.

David Göttler - 6.1K Likes - What should you eat when you’re attempting a big mountain? How do you cook it up there in a tiny tent? It’s actually a bit more tricky than you might think. I’ve tried so many things over the years and in this week’s #MountainMentor episode I share what food and food prep looks like for me right now on a big mountain.
I’m curious to hear what your favourite mountain foods are. Let me know in the comments.

These pictures are from a day last year climbing a few pitches with my 82 year old dad. Days like this are worth their hours in gold.

Nerdy? yes🤓…but worth it!
In the new #MountainMentor episode on my YouTube channel, I explain all things packing and backpack related. Click the link in the bio to take a look.

David Göttler - 3.8K Likes - I’ve only ever been here before in winter, but I’m more than happy to see and experience this mountain now in the summer.

David Göttler - 3.7K Likes - Day 4: this was the planned summit day, from our camp at 7400m on the Rupal face, crossing over to the Diamir side, along and up to the summit and back.

Just a disclaimer tho: my kit is pretty light and minimalistic, but trekking up the Khumbu, or to a remote base camp, or even a hut to hut trek in the European Alps are all so much more enjoyable with next to nothing in your pack! Don’t you agree?

David Göttler - 3.5K Likes - #MountainMentorMonday!

David Göttler - 3.2K Likes - A short, intense adventure is always a good one!

David Göttler - 3.1K Likes - As Aristotle said, “Patience is bitter, but its fruit is sweet”.

David Göttler - 2.8K Likes - The base camp on the Rupal side of Nanga Parbat ranks in my top 3 favourite basecamps of all 8k peaks.
