David Holmes Instagram - David was Daniel Radcliffe’s stunt double on the Harry Potter films, however one day a particular stunt left him paralysed.

David Holmes Instagram - Back in 2009, Jack Black was in the UK filming the movie Gulliver’s Travels. Jack was working closely with the stunt team and heard about my accident, and being the nice guy we all know he is, he dedicated some of his own time at the end of the filming day to come and visit me on the spinal ward with his stunt double, Jimmy. Here is a photo from that day and proof that he really is one of the nicest men in Hollywood. He brought joy to my bedside, but also spent time with all the other people in the hospital bay who had found themselves there after suffering a spinal cord injury.

The same year I flew out to Florida and Jimmy Waitman (Jack’s stunt double - left) was kind enough to show me around the Indiana Jones stunt show at the Disney Theme Park.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Jack and Jimmy for giving up their time, and for brightening up my day and the whole spinal ward at the Stanmore Royal Orthopaedic Hospital.
David Holmes Instagram - Once again, I found myself under the care of the NHS.

I believe that the National Health Service is the best example of what a functioning democracy should be. For any UK citizens, it is the parent they take for granted and have throughout their life. They were here for you when you were born and they will be there when you die. It’s an institution I adore. 15 years ago they saved my life and I will always do my best to sing their praises.

So today I’m a day patient doing a routine Botox operation on my bladder. If I was having this procedure in America, it would probably cost way more than $10,000, yet as a UK citizen, I’m getting it for free.

We hear all the time about the dysfunction the system is currently in. And yes, there is always room for improvement, but this takes investment, training and most importantly individuals who commit their working lives to the care of helping others. As the UK government enlists the help of private companies and algorithms to try and streamline time and costs, I ask the question, “Can you code compassion?”

Right now the NHS needs all the help it can get, but this takes governments who are willing to hold themselves accountable with implementing policies that first lead with empathy as its driving factor, not cost. I would like to thank anybody who works for the NHS, from the cleaners to the surgeons: you are all the everyday heroes that most of society and our government takes for granted.
David Holmes Instagram - If anybody is wondering why I’m not going to be live on stage at this week’s TEDxSoho, well, this is the reason I’m currently in bed with one of the worst infections I have been hit with in ages. I’m waiting on some results back, but I think I might have either E. coli or a urine infection.

This is the reality of disability … you work so hard for something, be so excited for something then the reality of living in my body has humbled me once again. So it’s back to my mattress prison for at least a week I reckon. I have to recover from this infection, I also have a small cut on my backside, which is going to force more bedrest on top.

I really am devastated. I have spent months learning a 10 minute monologue after working with a couple of amazing writers to try and and trim what I originally proposed. I have learned and learned and learned this speech and I really wanted to be up on that stage representing myself, my disability, the stunt community and my documentary in the best way possible but fate and circumstance has dealt me a cruel, cruel blow and I must lie here humbled taking care of myself and my body so I can live to fight another day.
David Holmes Instagram - Holy poo ball, Batman one of my best friends is now a proud recipient of a Tony award.

Merrily We Roll Along is famous for being one of the hardest musicals to perform and after catching it when I was in New York in November I can definitely confirm this fact.

The whole cast delivers something beyond musical theatre that is complex witty and funny to it's core with amazing musical numbers, difficult choreography and some of the most intense pacing you've ever seen live on a stage.

The fact that Daniel has won is proof to me once again that he is one of the best actors of his generation not only on screen but also on stage.

I could not be more proud of Dan, not only for the run of nearly a year on Broadway doing eight shows a week but also for his commitment to the cast and the crew to agreeing to the shows extension putting himself through extra months of this super intense play for the benefit of all who are in the production and most importantly, the audiences who got the opportunity to view such an absolute masterpiece

Well done Dan, proud of you mate and love you very much.
David Holmes Instagram - So every year for the past 15 years the David Holmes Charity Cricket Match has been running a closed door event for all my family and friends from the film industry, as well as plenty of my old classmates from Harry Potter.

It’s such a wonderful day, and thanks to Amy Stares who arranges it each year we have raised over £100,000 for the Royal Orthapedic Hospital, which is where I was treated for my recovery injury. I’m still under the care of the expert team and that hospital to this day.

I’m proud to announce that this year the cricket match is going to be live streamed so that anybody who wants to watch the event can, as well as contribute to the Fundraising appeal, raising money for @the.rnoh.charity and @greatormondst. Fundraising link in bio.

David Holmes Instagram - Breath hold training: There is a good chance that independent breathing might be inhibited in my future. Instead of accepting this reality, I’m not going down without a fight. For the last few years I have been pushing for a max breath hold with a self-taught technique. Now after some training with Ian at Free Dive UK, I am aiming to build on his teachings and hopefully push for my Mount Everest which is five minutes.

These images provide a deeply intimate glimpse into the life of a quadriplegic man and the dedicated effort of his team to prepare him. This project not only sheds light on someone’s most vulnerable moments but also offers insight into the experience of disability.

David has been a dear family friend for a long time, and I’ve known him since before the accident. His daily inspiration, as he continues to radiate positivity even in the most challenging of circumstances, truly amazes me. When he asked me to come meet him to shoot just the process of him getting ready for the premier I knew I had to.

If you haven’t watch the documentary I recommend you do so to understand his amazing life. He was the lead stunt double on the Harry Potter franchise which then lead him to having an accident of the filming of the last film.
Finally shout out to: @matt.genovese for assisting me on the day.

David Holmes Instagram - So here’s a throwback photo I’ve already posted before, but thought it’s worth throwing out there on the day before the BAFTAs. If you haven’t watched my documentary then I’d like to inform all Harry Potter fans that it wasn’t just Harry I performed stunts for. Here is a photo of me after I had just doubled Tom Felton aka Draco Malfoy as he fell off of his broomstick in the Quidditch match in HP2.

The stunt itself was one of my many wire gags and for anyone watching if you pause it at the right time, you can see my face!

Not only did I perform a stunt in this Quidditch match, but I also was a Slytherin Beater myself.

Also, another really cool detail is that just after the Quidditch match in the film you can see me at Malfoy’s bedside comforting him from his injuries he sustained in the match. So it’s me pretending to be empathetic consoling Tom Felton over a stunt I actually performed for him. The magic of the movies. 😂😂
David Holmes Instagram - The BAFTAs last night was a fun adventure. My documentary was nominated but unfortunately didn’t win. I want to congratulate Ellie Simmonds and her team for the well deserved win and also say congrats to every one at the event. It's still unacceptable that I was the only stunt performer in the room and if I’d of won I’d have said something on stage about my department being overlooked.

Honestly it was fun but unless BAFTA starts recognising stunts I wouldn’t do it again. I didn’t see any other department members who were willing to risk their lives and bodies for the sake of storytelling and I just sat in a room too cold for a quadriplegic surrounded by people from a whole industry who don’t think stunt performers deserve a category.

David Holmes Instagram - In 2008, between the Potter movies, I worked on Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.
Both myself and Marc Mailley were brought in to double for the kids, with Marc being the stunt double for young Dastan and myself the double for his childhood friend in the film. My job was to be jumping around rooftops performing parkour, evading capture. Marc actually performed the biggest gags and I was to do a few.

Mike Newell was directing - he had also directed Potter 4, so knew me well. He’s a lovely man and actually visited me in hospital after my accident.

Our job started with flying out to Morocco, a couple of nights in Marrakesh, and then a scenic drive over the Atlas Mountains to the town of Ouarzazate, a known filming town at the top of the Sahara desert, previously used as a location for the movies Gladiator, Lawrence of Arabia, and Kingdom of Heaven. Gladiator 2 has just finished filming there. Upon arriving in town, I instantly realise the whole place is just set up for making movies. There are old pieces of film sets just sitting in the desert everywhere. Not far from the town there are mud buildings dating to thousands of years old which we used for filming.

Filming stunts in the scorching heat presented its own problems, but you just get on with it and between set ups we just chased shade wherever we could find it and drank a camel’s portion of water.

The best part of the whole job was the Morocco wrap party where I got myself nicely inebriated and started doing flips off the hotel roof into to pool and proceeded to leave an impression on Jake Gyllenhaal, who was dong impressions of my cockney accent for weeks afterwards. It was such a great film to work on, and one of my fondest movie-making memories from my career.

David Holmes Instagram - The impact of the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital (RNOH) cannot be overstated.

I could not be more thankful for the outpouring of love and support for my documentary David Holmes: The Boy Who Lived. The main reason I am able to be here now is due to their expert team at the RNOH. That’s why I became an ambassador for the RNOH Charity over 10 years ago.

The Spinal Cord Injury Centre, where I stayed, is dedicated to comprehensive rehabilitation for people like me who experienced life changing spinal cord injuries. The centre needs funds for its out-dated Day room to create a space that enhances the wellbeing of patients, promotes community and elevates morale during recovery.

Please join me in supporting the incredible work of the RNOH and helping other patients who face similar challenges by supporting (give only what you can afford) the Go-Fund Me in our bio🔗 - you’ll find more in depth information about the RNOH and its impact there as well. We aim to raise the funds before Christmas so the work can begin in the new year.

Thank you so much for helping to support the hospital that rebuilds lives like mine. Best wishes, David Holmes.

*In the event that we raise surplus funds, the RNOH Charity will allocate these funds towards its most pressing needs and general charitable activities.

David Holmes Instagram - Autumn continued
After New York, I flew home and went straight into the London Premiere, a giant event, hosted by @skytv . It was attended by some of my old Potter cast mates, production team and friends and family. I was on stage in front of a few hundred people being interviewed by a childhood hero of mine, former Blue Peter presenter Konnie Huk.

Two days after the Sky, event at my documentary was shown to the wider world released on #HBOMax in the USA and #Skytv in the UK.
Since then the whirlwind got stronger, the outpouring of love and appreciation I have been shown across the Instagram and social media in general has been truly humbling. My story has really connected to people from all walks of life, able and disabled, and it has told me that there is strength in showing vulnerability. Words can’t describe how proud I am of my production team and of all the people that are willing to share their reflections on my life in the film. #DavidHolmesTheBoyWhoLived #Skytv #HBOMax #NowI’mFamousOhShit #Documentary #spinalcordinjury #LifeIsNotARehearsal #Gratitude #Humility

David Holmes Instagram - This summer I finished off a property development (making sure it could accommodate for a disabled homeowner) one road away from my house and then I stayed at home storing up vital energy in preparation for the second half of the year for when my documentary. #DavidHolmesTheBoyWhoLived.
The weather this summer wasn’t the best, but on a few good days I made the most of my beautiful garden and created memories with loved ones in the place I call home. #LeighOnSea making sure I never missed the sunset, ate healthy food and worked hard on my body and my mind with physiotherapy and positive reinforcement.
I also treated myself to a new car which I took delivery of on my birthday and drove it up north with a new kitten to someone very special.
The summer ended as it usually does with the annual David Holmes cricket cup where my friends and family gather to play a game of cricket and raise some money for the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital. #Rnoh #Self-Care #CharityWork #HomeIsWhereTheHeartIs #RangeRover set

David Holmes Instagram - This is Robert Grayson

Last week I was informed of the sad news of Roberts sudden passing.

Anybody who worked with Rob in the film industry knows Robert was one of the best assistant directors the industry ever produced. I had many fun times with this man. he was exceptionally good at his job ,devilishly handsome always funny and made everybody feel welcome around him

This photo was taken when he joined me celebrating my 21st birthday and Little Italy restaurant in Soho .

Like stunt performers assistant directors are very much the unsung heroes of the film industry they are never given awards yet they are always the hardest working department and responsible for almost every aspect of the filmmaking process and not one movie could be made without them

I urge anybody to check out his credit list on IMDb Just so they can know how much of a contribution to the world of entertainment he made.

I’m sending love and comfort to all of Rob family friends and loved ones
Rest in peace, mate
David Holmes Instagram - So yesterday I had the honour of visiting legend Matt Hampson OBE, founder of the Get Busy Living Centre. Matt is beyond a legend. He was injured playing rugby for England under 21s and he turned his experience into something beyond positive.

I also got to meet someone I’ve been a fan of for a couple of years. George Robinson is a young disabled actor who shot to fame on the Netflix series Sex Education. George played a complex new character and wasn’t just ‘the disabled kid’ in the show. Not only am I excited to see his career blossom and future roles he will no doubt smash but hopefully the pair of us can work together and bring some more characters and stories about disabled people, who are more than just a person with a disability to audiences in the future.

Thank you Hambo and everybody at the Get Busy Living Centre for the warm welcome and for everything you guys do for our community.

David Holmes Instagram - I can’t believe it, but I’m hosting a TED Talk - I will be on stage at the TEDxSoho event on Mon 17 June 2024.

I don’t normally get nervous around things like this but to be included in such a prestigious lineup of extremely talented people is truly an honour.

The talk will reflect on my very unique journey from stuntman to quadriplegic and how it changed the way I live in and view the world.

Tickets are now on sale, and anybody who wants to come, listen to me, support, or just be entertained for a few hours by a lot smarter people than me, then please check out the website and the link in my bio.

I hope I make everybody proud, and I want to thank the organisers at Ted for giving me the platform to share my perspectives.
David Holmes Instagram - So immensely proud of my friend @maxwhitlock and all of the boys competing in today’s Olympic team competition. Not many people know but many years ago I was approached by Max through my friend his coach @scotthann to sponsor him early in his career. I was there in the audience in London 2012 as they made history achieving team bronze as well as Max getting one of his many individual medals he’s had over his illustrious carer. Good luck today, mate to you and all of team GB.

David Holmes Instagram - I had the upmost pleasure of attending the Murcia film festival at the weekend.

I was invited by organiser Ruben alongside my good friend and 2nd Unit director Peter MacDonald (2nd photo). Me and Peter worked together for many years on the Harry Potter films and we share some amazing memories.

It was so nice to be in a room full of film fans from all ages. I spoke about what it was like to be a stuntman as well as some stories from my time spent at Hogwarts.

Thank you again to everybody who came to the Q&A session, to Ruben and most importantly to the beautiful city of Murcia. It’s so nice to see such a vibrant community of film lovers gather together for a celebration of cinema.

David Holmes Instagram - I had the pleasure of meeting these young wonderful human beings at the Young Carers Charity in Benfleet.

Young Carers are children and young people aged between 5-18 years old, who provide emotional, physical or practical care to someone who experiences poor physical or mental health or disability, usually in their own family. This charity specialises in creating a safe space for young minds whose background is not the easiest to navigate. The charity offers individual help and support to young carers and their families by providing activities that help to build skills, maintain physical and mental health and wellbeing needed for their role as a young carer along with the chance to have fun and make new friends in similar circumstances.

It was so nice to meet them all and tell them some of my Harry Potter stories and genuinely be around such positive energy.

I do believe it’s vital to provide access to spaces like this around the country. Child development is key to providing a better society for tomorrow and should be one of the top priorities of any government. It should not be solely left to charities who have to fight for every penny they get. Most importantly we should be supporting the people who care about a better tomorrow by putting the work in today.

I would like to thank all the people involved in the charity, especially Sharon Box who I understand always goes above and beyond to provide a variety of experiences in a safe and welcoming space for these youngsters to learn and grow.
Lastly I would like to thank all the wonderful bright minds who weren’t afraid to ask difficult questions. They all brought joy and a lovely energy to my evening.

David Holmes Instagram - Autumn continues
In November, I flew to New York and premiered the film at the New York documentary festival . Thankfully, the strike ended and I was able to do some of the promotional work with one of my best mates Dan. Navigating the press attention was a challenge, and I had to do so, whilst also taking care of my body whilst it goes through another change. New York was mind blowing an upgrade @thedominickhotel gave me one of the best views of my life. I ate great food caught up with some old friends and drove through Central Park whilst listening to Frank Sinatra and John Lennon with a bit of hip-hop and Fred again thrown in.

David Holmes - 12.8K Likes - Once again, I found myself under the care of the NHS.

“The Boy Who Lived Premiere” for @hbo

David Holmes - 7.9K Likes - So here’s a throwback photo I’ve already posted before, but thought it’s worth throwing out there on the day before the BAFTAs.

David Holmes - 7.5K Likes - The BAFTAs last night was a fun adventure.

I didn’t see any other department members who were willing to risk their lives and bodies for the sake of storytelling and I just sat in a room too cold for a quadriplegic surrounded by people from a whole industry who don’t think stunt performers deserve a category. #StuntsForBafta #Bafta #Quadriplegic #NoArmsLegsAnNoVoice #PenguinOnWheels

I want to congratulate Ellie Simmonds and her team for the well deserved win and also say congrats to every one at the event. David Holmes - 4.9K Likes - In 2008, between the Potter movies, I worked on Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.

David Holmes - 4.9K Likes - The impact of the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital (RNOH) cannot be overstated.

Best wishes, David Holmes. *In the event that we raise surplus funds, the RNOH Charity will allocate these funds towards its most pressing needs and general charitable activities. #davidholmestheboywholived #davidholmes #RNOH #gofundme #rnohcharity #spinalcordinjuryawareness

David Holmes - 3.9K Likes - This summer I finished off a property development (making sure it could accommodate for a disabled homeowner) one road away from my house and then I stayed at home storing up vital energy in preparation for the second half of the year for when my documentary.

David Holmes - 3.1K Likes - This is Robert Grayson

David Holmes - 2.8K Likes - So yesterday I had the honour of visiting legend Matt Hampson OBE, founder of the Get Busy Living Centre.

David Holmes - 2.2K Likes - I can’t believe it, but I’m hosting a TED Talk - I will be on stage at the TEDxSoho event on Mon 17 June 2024.

David Holmes - 1.6K Likes - I had the upmost pleasure of attending the Murcia film festival at the weekend.

David Holmes - 1.3K Likes - I had the pleasure of meeting these young wonderful human beings at the Young Carers Charity in Benfleet.
