Evelyn Edwards Instagram - There is so much to tell about Raglan Castle. I could write volumes. Actually, people have. But for now I’ll just give you a fun little snippet. The Raglan Castle you see today was started by Sir William ap Thomas. He was a serious mover and a shaker. His family was not particularly wealthy or important and he was the 5th son. What he DID do was marry well. His first wife was a wealthy widow named Elizabeth and it was through her that he acquired Raglan Castle. Elizabeth died and William married another wealthy widow with three sons, Gwladus Gam. Gwladus’ family had a quite the connection to the Royal Court. This helped a lot, as you can imagine. When Elizabeth, William’s first wife, died he stayed on at Raglan castle and a few years later purchased it outright from his stepson for one thousand marks (around six hundred sixty-six pounds). William, and then his son, ended up building one of the most luxurious and glorious fortified castles in Wales. Thanks ladies.

It’s hard to read about the Middle Ages without coming across something having to do with plague, the sweat, or some sort of massive famine. I am constantly so grateful for modern medicine, hygiene, antibiotics and vaccines!! The Black Death was the most fatal pandemic in human history. It had its peak in Europe from 1347 to 1351. Depending on your which sources you read, it is estimated it killed 30-60% of the European population. Let that sink in for a moment. That means the Black Death touched everyone, everything, and completely altered life for YEARS. Tintern Abbey was also one of the places massively effected by The Black Death. In 1349 there were NO new recruits at all to the Abbey. And the numbers of those that were there dwindled significantly. I have been to this castle a half a dozen times and NOTHING. I would sigh and leave. I have even been there one the hottest day in Scottish recorded history! (Not the best photographic conditions) Even the day this picture was shot there were clear blue skies almost the whole day. Evelyn Edwards Instagram - I will forever be entranced by nature. Hiking The Storr on the Isle of Skye in Scotland made my imagination go wild. When I go to epic landscapes like this I completely understand why we make myths and legends to help wrap our brain around the sheer awesomeness in front of us. Many of the legends on the Isle of Skye have to do with giants, fairies, brownies, Selkies (a creature that changes from seal to human, and the odd dragon thrown in for good measure. One popular legend is that this outcropping of rocks was formed when a giant died on this very spot and his thumb is one of the pointy rocks. The best part about this legend is it’s also believed that this legend morphed into ta kinder, more child friendly version of the story when it was written down…. And that the pointed rock is really the giant’s “you-know-what”. The owner of the castle, Gilbert de Clare actually fought at the very long siege at Kenilworth castle in 1266 that lasted 6 months. Evelyn Edwards Instagram - There is a legend that in 1127 King David I of Scotland was hunting near Edinburgh in September during The Feast of the Cross. While he was hunting, he became separated from his men and lost his way in the forest. It is said that as King David was trying to find his way back to the path and his men a giant white stag appeared and startled his horse- throwing him to the ground. The horse bolted, frightened of the stag, and there lie the King on the ground waiting to be trampled upon or run through by the antlers of the angry stag. The story then continues that a bright light in the form of a crucifix appeared in between the antlers of the stag and as David began to reach for it the stag became frightened and ran away. Or was it light that shone through the trees in the shape of the cross that blinded the stag? Or it there is even one version of the legend that says a physical cross appeared in David’s hand and he used it to banish the stag away from him... it all depends on which source your read or what guide you happen to get at Holyrood palace. The result of this experience led King David to build a church in the very spot the stag appeared to him. After the Dissolution of Monasteries by Henry VIII, Fountains Abbey was sold to Sir Richard Gresham. Richard Gresham, interestingly enough, furnished Cardinal Wolsey with all his tapestries at Hampton Court Palace. And after Wolsey died, it was Grisham who paid for the cardinal’s funeral. It’s possible that some unknown ruin I have yet to explore may steal my heart… but I kind of don’t think so. The detail that always boggles my mind about how Fountains Abbey became ruin is— when it was bought after the reformation the owner immediately started tearing it down to defray the cost of purchasing the land and buildings. I get it. It’s was expensive…. I just wished he hadn’t have started tearing it down. William Marshal’s life is the stuff of novels (many) plays (he’s mentioned by name in Shakespeare’s King John), ballads (yes really...the ballad is called “Queen Elanor’s Confession”), and Hollywood Blockbuster films are made of. But Isabel is who I think about. Isabel’s brother died when he was 11 or 12 and she then became one of the wealthiest heiresses in Wales and Ireland. She also became the legal ward to Henry II. Henry II promised William he could marry Isabel. William had long served Henry II, and this marriage was absolutely a reward for all he that had done. Henry II soon died after this promise was made and Richard the Lionhearted, the next king, fulfilled it. They had an apparently lavish wedding in London. William Marshall’s marriage to Isabel made him go from a knight with no titles or land to one of the wealthiest men in the land. Chepstow Castle is one of the castles he inherited through Isabel. This bridge was built in the late 1700s after the Battle of Culloden by the English as part of a massive road and bridge network to allow easier movement for their troops. This area was a resting place for drovers taking cattle from the west of Scotland to markets in the south. There is so much amazing history here- from Vikings holding the castle to Mary Queen of Scots sending an army here, and lots and lots of family intrigue. One of the Lairds of Findlater had sexual relations with his mother-in-law. He came up with the bright idea of locking up his father in a cellar, depriving him of sleep, and hopefully driving him mad so he could pull a fast one and get his father’s lands. Deep in the hill, it was once believed, there was a cave that you could go in to and enter the realm of fairies. It was also believed that Jesus’ uncle brought the Holy Grail here. Christ was also thought to have visited here with Joseph of Arimathea as a boy. Even the great King Arthur is thought to have visited here after his last battle and monks in Glastonbury have said they found his grave all the way back in 1191. The very names of the people who have walked through this door alone would make me want to never let it decay to this point. The man who commissioned the castle was James Graham , 4ty Duke of Montrose. James built this castle and another swanky property in London. He was educated at Eton and Cambridge, played cricket, and was a conservative politician. One of his claims to fame was introducing the “The Telegraphs Act” when he was postmaster general. I constantly marvel at the incredible time, craftsmanship and effort that went in to building these magnificent structures. The people who built some of these abbeys literally gave their lives to do so. Generations of labour are in these stones. You can tell that truly wanted every inch of their place of worship to be something special... because friends, my basement doesn’t look this good... and it definitely doesn’t inspire me to think about the mysteries of the universe. It’s even more fun for me to imagine all the people and activities that happened there. This tower is the Keep of Skenfrith Castle. Dirt would have been piled up around this round tower and there would have been a wooded staircase outside of the building. The basement would only have been accessed through a trap door. You might notice the larger window holes at the top. This is where the lord would have lived, on the second floor. The chambers would have had a fireplace and it’s own private latrine. Evelyn Edwards Instagram - I couldn’t help but post a fantastic abbey ruin on the first day of Lent. I didn’t grow up Catholic... but I did go to an all girls private Catholic college for a year before I transferred to UCLA. It was then that I began “giving up something for lent” - usually diet soda or something akin to that. But the Medieval Monk would have gone through a season of fasting and penance that the modern person would shudder at today. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday were “black fasts” with no food consumed at all on those days. On all the other days of Lent food was not consumed until 3pm which was considered “the hour of our Lord’s death.” Water, watered down beer as well as watered down wine were allowed for beverages during the 40 (really 46 days if you count the Sundays) day fasting period. The Monks would not be allowed eggs, dairy, meat, cheese, cream, or animal fats of any kind. Lent would then culminate with the Triduum: the 40-hour fast lasting from sundown on Maundy ‘commandment’ Thursday all through to the middle of the day on Holy Saturday. A holy man gave the advice that they should all pray about it and then come to a decision. The next morning 3 bodies were found - all exactly the same, and wrapped in its funeral sheets - leaving each parish to claim that Saint Baldred had been laid to rest there. It is rumored that one of the Saint Baldred bodies was buried at Auldhame Castle. Me. Evelyn Edwards Instagram - I love Tioram Castle so much. For me history comes alive when I learn about the people involved with the buildings I capture. There are quite a few women with amazing stories associated with Tioram as well as Lairds with a bit of a temper. In 1996 the castle was put for sale on the market for £100,000 and ended up being purchased for £300,000 by a private owner in 1997. The owners want to make it a private residence and a legal and planning permission battle has been going back and forth for the last 23 years with Historic Scotland. And what makes this hike even more amusing is I NEVER know that Turner had been to these properties until well after I have been there. You’d think I’d just look up all the ruins Turner painted and go there. But that wouldn’t be as fun would it? Smailholm Tower has another incredibly famous person associated with it as well: Sir Walter Scott. Scott apparently spent quite a bit of time here as a boy with his grandfather. Two of his works have Smailholm as the background setting. Because of Walter’s poetry of the Tower, his Uncle ended up restoring the tower in the 1800s to make it safe. Evelyn Edwards Instagram - Beautiful beautiful Byland Abbey. Riveaulx and Fountains Abbey get so much attention. (And by the way they totally should. Scroll down a bit in my feed to the Riveaulx Abbey photo. That place is uh-mazing.) Byland felt very special to me. Byland Abbey was 43 years in the making! A group of Savigniac monks founded a monastery in 1128 in Furness Cumberland. They Abbey was successful enough to take some of the recruits and form a sister house. So 12 monks and an Abbot named Gerold set out to start new Abbey at a place called Calder, a little farther up the coast. That didn’t work out so well as that location was sacked by the Scots army. For the next 40 years the monks moved from location to location. They ended up adopting the Cistercian rule...there were LOTS of disputes and finally they settled at Byland and built this glorious structure. Evelyn Edwards Instagram - Castles on coasts make me swoon. This is actually two castles in one and is considered to be the early ancient seat of the Sinclair Clan. This castle had some colorful owners one of which was George the 4th Earl of Caithness. It is alleged that George concocted a plan to have the Aunt of the 11th Earl of Sunderland, Isobel Sinclair, poison her nephew, his wife and his family. The all would allow Isobel’s son to inherit the Earldom of Sunderland so then the lands could be seized by the Sinclair’s. Poisoning, however, can be tricky business... Isobel accidentally poisoned her own son along with the rest of the guests at the banquet EXCEPT the true heir to the Sunderland Earldom who was able to escape. Oops. Isobel Sinclair was convicted of murder and sentenced to execution. Battle Abbey was built on the site of the Battle of Hastings. The Pope at the time, Pope Alexander II, told Mister William the Conqueror (that’s what I affectionately call him, sometimes Will C) that he killed WAY to many people and he needed to make up for it. In its day, Byland Abbey was considered to be one of the finest churches in 12th in the whole of Europe. Evelyn Edwards Instagram - Castle Varrich is the long ago seat of Clan Mackay. The Castle history has lots possibles, maybes and might-have-beens. It might be on a Norse site from the 11th century. Castle Varrich lies in the Kyle of Tongue and the name “Tounge” is believed to come from the Norse word “Tunga” which means tongue of land at the nesting of two rivers. It’s also said that there are possibly caves beneath the Castle that the Mackays lived in. It might been owned by the Bishop of Caithness before it belonged to the Mackays as a stoping point that he stayed in between his two properties. It might have been a tower, maybe a look out? What it definitely is is a 16th century tower that was a reconstruction of an earlier structure and was abandoned before the 18th century. And it’s definitely stunning. Netley Abbey monks were known to be kind and generous hosts to its visitors. So kind, in fact, that it had to ask for grants from the king multiple times because hosting the king’s sailors and travelers by sea was expensive business! Evelyn Edwards Instagram - Whenever I look at Glastonbury Tor, I marvel at how far away you can see the hill that the remaining tower of St Michael’s Church can be seen. I think about all the people who have climbed this hill in the past, and those that still do literally daily that draw inspiration from this landmark. I, too, have climbed the hill and walked up the steps of the Tor and stood in wonder. The Tor has so many legends associated with it- you could spend a lifetime following the trails of the marvelous tales of King Arthur , Avalon and the door to the fairy realm, the holy grail…. How could you not fall in love?!As with all romantic ruins, legends of ghosts and hauntings abound. This castle is known to have two ghosts: a nurse maid who dropped a baby from one of the windows, as well as a piper or jester who was imprisoned here and escaped to the caves below the castle. During the English Civil war Bodison castle was owned by a guy named Lord Thanet. Lord Thanet was pro Royalist. In 1644 he sold the castle for £6000 to pay the fines that were placed on him from Parliament. At 33 she decided she would become a nun and in ten years she founded one of the most important centers of Christianity in the Anglo-Saxon world- Whitby Abbey. Hilda was so well regarded, it is said kings would come to her for advice. She fostered the talent of the first known English poet and six of her monks became prominent bishops. Evelyn Edwards Instagram - This little chapel is one of my most favorite finds in the last several years. It is down a path you’d never know existed. A funny story…as we were trying to find the beginning of the pathway to the ruin a man in his twenties dressed in full 100% 1800s clothing came out of nowhere. He was listening to music. He couldn’t have been more than 20 feet in front of us. The main track turned and he went out of our view. There was no where to turn into- no bush or hedge to be covered by. And we we rounded the same bend he was gone. I turned to my husband and said “We’ll that was weird!” We walked farther along for about 15 or do minutes and finally found the entrance to the path… and there he was walking out of exactly the place we were going! Sometimes I cry spontaneously at random intervals during the day. When the men from 18-60 were told they had to stay in Ukraine I thought - “what if my sweet incredible husband had to do that?” We talked about it. The reality of this war is heartbreaking and unfathomable. It is not lost on me that I post pictures and videos and stories of places that were built by men and regimes who used them to further their own political aims. Structures made for the rich often on the backs of the poor. History repeats itself. I walked down these hallowed halls and this idea reverberated throughout my entire body. We think we are different, and we would never!, and how barbaric they were back then! “What silly silly things they believed!” We say. And here we are. Evelyn Edwards Instagram - The West face of Castle Acre Priory gives you a small glimpse of the glorious carving that might would have been seen all over this amazing church. Castle Acre priory was one of many monasteries in Britain that was bound to the mother Abbey of Cluny in France. This Abbey was quite possibly the wealthiest monastic house is the world. The monks at Castle Acre Priory would have had to travel to France to consult or be given direction from the abbots of Cluny. Interestingly, the heads of Cluny only came to Britain five times in the 13th century and twice in the 14th century. Castle Acre, because they were an offshoot of Cluny Abbey, had to send money to them. Even though most of the monks were English, Castle Acre Priory was still punitively taxed (read as possessions seized and money had to be sent to France) during the wars with France/ Burgundy in the 13th and 14th centuries. A formal charter of naturalization for Castle Acre Priory came in 1351 and it became considered a “native” English priory. ⁣ #churcharchitecture #englishhistory #england

Wellll….that movie was inspired by a real person and that man’s name was William Marshal and he is considered to be England’s greatest knight. He served 5 consecutive English kings….One for the castles he is credited for enlarging and expanding is only 35 minutes from my house. I have been to this castle dozens of times and only recently was I struck by this room. While he was hunting, he became separated from his men and lost his way in the forest. It is said that as King David was trying to find his way back to the path and his men a giant white stag appeared and startled his horse- throwing him to the ground. The horse bolted, frightened of the stag, and there lie the King on the ground waiting to be trampled upon or run through by the antlers of the angry stag. The story then continues that a bright light in the form of a crucifix appeared in between the antlers of the stag and as David began to reach for it the stag became frightened and ran away. Or was it light that shone through the trees in the shape of the cross that blinded the stag? After the Dissolution of Monasteries by Henry VIII, Fountains Abbey was sold to Sir Richard Gresham. There is so much amazing history here- from Vikings holding the castle to Mary Queen of Scots sending an army here, and lots and lots of family intrigue. One of the Lairds of Findlater had sexual relations with his mother-in-law. He came up with the bright idea of locking up his father in a cellar, depriving him of sleep, and hopefully driving him mad so he could pull a fast one and get his father’s lands. The man who commissioned the castle was James Graham , 4ty Duke of Montrose. James built this castle and another swanky property in London. He was educated at Eton and Cambridge, played cricket, and was a conservative politician. One of his claims to fame was introducing the “The Telegraphs Act” when he was postmaster general. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday were “black fasts” with no food consumed at all on those days. On all the other days of Lent food was not consumed until 3pm which was considered “the hour of our Lord’s death.” Water, watered down beer as well as watered down wine were allowed for beverages during the 40 (really 46 days if you count the Sundays) day fasting period. The Monks would not be allowed eggs, dairy, meat, cheese, cream, or animal fats of any kind. Lent would then culminate with the Triduum: the 40-hour fast lasting from sundown on Maundy ‘commandment’ Thursday all through to the middle of the day on Holy Saturday. And what makes this hike even more amusing is I NEVER know that Turner had been to these properties until well after I have been there. For the next 40 years the monks moved from location to location. A funny story…as we were trying to find the beginning of the pathway to the ruin a man in his twenties dressed in full 100% 1800s clothing came out of nowhere. He was listening to music. He couldn’t have been more than 20 feet in front of us. The main track turned and he went out of our view. There was no where to turn into- no bush or hedge to be covered by. And we we rounded the same bend he was gone. I turned to my husband and said “We’ll that was weird!” We walked farther along for about 15 or do minutes and finally found the entrance to the path… and there he was walking out of exactly the place we were going! Castle Acre priory was one of many monasteries in Britain that was bound to the mother Abbey of Cluny in France. This Abbey was quite possibly the wealthiest monastic house is the world. The monks at Castle Acre Priory would have had to travel to France to consult or be given direction from the abbots of Cluny. Interestingly, the heads of Cluny only came to Britain five times in the 13th century and twice in the 14th century. Castle Acre, because they were an offshoot of Cluny Abbey, had to send money to them. Even though most of the monks were English, Castle Acre Priory was still punitively taxed (read as possessions seized and money had to be sent to France) during the wars with France/ Burgundy in the 13th and 14th centuries.
