Fabrice Calmels Instagram - I would like to take a moment to congratulate our now former Mayor of Chicago Mr. Rahm Emanuel @rahmemanuel @chicagosmayor , for his work as the mayor of Chicago but more for his incredible support for the Art and the Joffrey Ballet. Mr. Emanuel regularly showed up to our performances and came backstage to congratulate us and share with us his feedback. I arrived in Chicago in 2002 and I must admit that he has made the City much better. While the journey of empowering our City is still not over, there is now hope that Chicago can one day become the leading city in the US. Fabrice Calmels Instagram - A month ago I was dancing and taking my final bow on stage at the Auditorium Theatre. I was 18 when I came to the United States leaving my family and my country. Now, after 18 years growing with and leading a company, I have moved to California leaving a salary, a city, and a reputation. I am starting from scratch once again. But through the years I have learned self-empowerment and courage. In some funny way, this move has shown me the character and the true colors of my surroundings. The vultures flew away and left me with a few strong souls that have spent days (to my surprise) supporting me and stuck with me through this heavy transition. Here I am in my new home!🌻 Thank you! Thank you for never making me compete with others. Thank you for the unconditional love. Thank you for staying true, honest, and respectful of our relationship. Thank you to all of my friends. I am really grateful to have you in my life.

The ballet industry is suffering right now, but let's remind ourselves that in the 19th century, dance plateaued out before Diaghilev (an art connoisseur) arrived and changed the whole game, with one word: creativity. My point is, it will take a creative push to figure out the solution...and I think our industry is stocked with creative people. Let's hang on!👍

Fabrice Calmels Instagram - It is with great sadness that I am announcing my departure from the Joffrey Ballet, the company I have loved and called my home for almost 19 years. My last performance will be December 29, 2019, at 2 pm. Leaving was a hard decision given my passion for ballet and my love for the Joffrey and our audience. I am not leaving because of age or health or a desire to retire. Rather, I’m leaving to pursue my next adventure as an artist. I’ve had some time to think about the role I’ve played at the Joffrey throughout my career and what I still want to accomplish. I do not believe in becoming stagnant but always growing and achieving. As I watch new dancers make their debuts, I am inspired to pursue new dreams and take on new challenges. I wish to use my talent and drive to create a positive impact in the world of art. So for now, I will also be saying goodbye to my other home and love, Chicago, for Los Angeles. I want to thank each and every one of you who has lifted me up and supported me unconditionally. I will always carry you in my heart. I also want to thank the Joffrey Ballet and especially Gerald Arpino, who gave me the opportunity to do what I love. Mr. Arpino carved and molded me when I was just a raw stone. He was and will always be a significant influence to me for which I am forever grateful. For now, I’m moving forward on to my next adventure. This is not goodbye but a see you soon. And if the Joffrey Ballet ever wants me in the future as an Artistic Director, my answer will be an enthusiastic Yes!

Fabrice Calmels Instagram - Today my granddad passed at almost 94--what a celebration and an irony. He is probably laughing right now and saying "I told you so." This man smoked “Gitanes Mais” (the worst cigarettes), and ate ridiculous amounts of chocolate. He drank espresso while simultaneously holding a sugar cube between his molars, waiting for the coffee to slowly melt the cube so he could get his shot of sugar. He did everything that the book of health condemned and yet lived to 94 years. I once made the mistake of calling him an old man when I was a teenager and mocking him from a distance, as I used to love bugging and poking at him.  At the time, he was barefoot while I was standing outside on the gravel, and he told me he would kick my butt if he caught me. I laughed, thinking I outmatched him because of my youth, my speed and strength from ballet (he was around 67 years old then), and also because I was wearing shoes and he was barefoot. Well, he ran after me and finally caught up to me after he chased me three times around the house. In my defense, I kept turning around to see if he was catching up, which he was, because every time I turned around, to my astonishment he was closer and reaching my soon-to-be-doomed fate. He was like Jesus walking on water; his feet barely touched the gravel.  As fast as Carl Lewis, his skinny and aerodynamic legs caught up to me, and it all ended with a good old fashioned spanking. The last time I saw him, he asked me "did you bring some" while holding two fingers to his mouth. I was confused. He continued: "Cigarettes you idiot!" He was a great grandfather. He was not sweet, but spicy, and we had this incredible relationship. He was a cultured man who read several books per week. He taught me to recognize mushrooms, and find them from the forest. He taught me how to recognize birds, by their look and sound. He taught me yoga (in the early morning, after forcing me out of bed).  He taught me to be spiritual, to recognize wild animal trails on our hikes, to learn the behavior of honey bees. Knowledge was his thing, and he loved to pass it along. So to you Grand Pere! I celebrate you and congratulate you on your amazing life :) R I P

What was meant to be a live show featuring the music of @officialinxs before the world shut down, turned into a short film with @universalmusicgroup, PETROL, and the epic band @officialinxs. Sadly, it also happened to be the final passion project of Chris “CM” Murphy, Australian entrepreneur and INXS’ longtime manager who passed away before we completed the film. It is a bittersweet affair, but boldly carries the beliefs of both Chris and I, that love wins, even in the darkest of times. Fabrice Calmels Instagram - I am 50% white and 50% black. And here is my mother and my brother. What I have learned from my mother is to never show weakness. She calls it a disservice to oneself. This world is not kind to the weak; from the animal kingdom, to natural disasters, the weak will always suffer the greatest.  My mother came to France without education and with my brother. My father fell in love with her, and they had me and my sister soon after. My father was a jeweler and during the late 80s and 90s in the French economy, with my father providing our only income, our family was in dire financial trouble. Our house was repossessed by the bank, and there were many days I went to bed hungry, hoping I would fall asleep fast to forget my hunger. My mother is the reason why we stayed strong.  She would not accept this as our fate, and during her 30s she took classes to earn an education while working multiple tedious jobs, including opening a parking gate of a flower shop, and while helping my father with his job. This woman who had no education and a fair amount of reason to be a victim never gave up. (She broke down at times at home, but she would immediately regroup and go on). She became an example to my family and others in our surrounding community. Even to this time, people ask her for advice about anything, and I myself continue to do so.  Through her I overcame the challenges of being an outcast in the ballet world and decided to continue to pursue my dance dream, regardless of all roadblocks.  I came to America alone without speaking the language, to live on a dime, to overcome the fear when I was homeless, to fight and earn money as an artist, to be who I am today.  Today I teach and support my students, protege/kids, and teach them grit. I hope and wish to be a quarter of her strength.  Happy birthday Mum! I love you so much ❤❤❤

When I reached my towering height of 6'7" at the age of 18, the ballet world seemed to turn its back on me. The Paris Opera Ballet suggested I pursue modeling instead, saying, "You have a better chance in modeling; ballet dancers are typically shorter." Undeterred, I left France for the United States. It was Gerald Arpino, Mr. A, who welcomed me into his company with open arms. At the Joffrey Ballet, my height was not seen as a disadvantage; rather, it was embraced as unique. Mr. A pushed me to realize my potential. I am forever indebted to Mr. A for giving me a career in ballet. His belief in me has left an indelible mark on my life. Fabrice Calmels Instagram - When I was a kid, I dreamt of a future with technology and scientific advancement. I thought regardless of what was going to happen I would be a part of a society that strived for the betterment of the world, and while as a child things were yet to my dreamt expectations, it would eventually happen by the time I would become an adult. With time I realized that much of the world wasn’t looking for betterment but for quick money. Our politicians would run the same scripted narrative on how they would change things: “they had a plan” they say, a plan for global warming, alternate energy, etc. But the same things would happen, nothing or too little. I learned about Elon in the early 2000s and things started to change quickly, risks were taken and results were obtained. Companies became a reality without scripted BS. Today I stand in front of the SpaceX starship, which is a true beginning for us and the symbol of deep space exploration for humans. This is no dream or science fiction, this is our future and the future of our children. Elon Musk and his vision and his team are a gift to this world. SpaceX, Tesla, Neuralink, Starlink, it is our reality now. Thank you Elon.

Fabrice Calmels Instagram - I was asked many times over the weekend about my thoughts on Ballet and why it seems to be plateauing. While some argue that ballet has improved purely on a technical level, my opinion is that it has become linear. Young dancers today focus so much on perfecting one or two solos for competitions, disregarding the rich vocabulary and precision that surrounds ballet. This approach has been embraced by teachers and artistic directors. The downside of this trend is that it has limited individuality and artistry in ballet. Dancers are now driven to prioritize the athletic "wow" factor, as if it's the only way to captivate an audience. However, we are left with one-dimensional dancers who struggle to convey genuine emotion beyond a smile for happiness or raised eyebrows for anger. They lack the understanding of how to develop a character and ultimately fail to bring a story to life. We must remember that ballet is not just a sport; it is an art form that requires depth, expression, and storytelling. My last performance will be December 29, 2019, at 2 pm. Leaving was a hard decision given my passion for ballet and my love for the Joffrey and our audience. I am not leaving because of age or health or a desire to retire. Rather, I’m leaving to pursue my next adventure as an artist. I’ve had some time to think about the role I’ve played at the Joffrey throughout my career and what I still want to accomplish. I do not believe in becoming stagnant but always growing and achieving. As I watch new dancers make their debuts, I am inspired to pursue new dreams and take on new challenges. I wish to use my talent and drive to create a positive impact in the world of art. So for now, I will also be saying goodbye to my other home and love, Chicago, for Los Angeles. I want to thank each and every one of you who has lifted me up and supported me unconditionally. I will always carry you in my heart. I also want to thank the Joffrey Ballet and especially Gerald Arpino, who gave me the opportunity to do what I love. Mr. Arpino carved and molded me when I was just a raw stone. He was and will always be a significant influence to me for which I am forever grateful. For now, I’m moving forward on to my next adventure. This is not goodbye but a see you soon. And if the Joffrey Ballet ever wants me in the future as an Artistic Director, my answer will be an enthusiastic Yes!

This man smoked “Gitanes Mais” (the worst cigarettes), and ate ridiculous amounts of chocolate. He drank espresso while simultaneously holding a sugar cube between his molars, waiting for the coffee to slowly melt the cube so he could get his shot of sugar. He did everything that the book of health condemned and yet lived to 94 years. I once made the mistake of calling him an old man when I was a teenager and mocking him from a distance, as I used to love bugging and poking at him.  At the time, he was barefoot while I was standing outside on the gravel, and he told me he would kick my butt if he caught me. I laughed, thinking I outmatched him because of my youth, my speed and strength from ballet (he was around 67 years old then), and also because I was wearing shoes and he was barefoot. Well, he ran after me and finally caught up to me after he chased me three times around the house. In my defense, I kept turning around to see if he was catching up, which he was, because every time I turned around, to my astonishment he was closer and reaching my soon-to-be-doomed fate. He was like Jesus walking on water; his feet barely touched the gravel.  As fast as Carl Lewis, his skinny and aerodynamic legs caught up to me, and it all ended with a good old fashioned spanking. The last time I saw him, he asked me "did you bring some" while holding two fingers to his mouth. I was confused. He continued: "Cigarettes you idiot!" He was a great grandfather. He was not sweet, but spicy, and we had this incredible relationship. He was a cultured man who read several books per week. He taught me to recognize mushrooms, and find them from the forest. He taught me how to recognize birds, by their look and sound. He taught me yoga (in the early morning, after forcing me out of bed).  He taught me to be spiritual, to recognize wild animal trails on our hikes, to learn the behavior of honey bees. Knowledge was his thing, and he loved to pass it along. So to you Grand Pere! I celebrate you and congratulate you on your amazing life :) R I P

He taught me how to recognize birds, by their look and sound. He taught me yoga (in the early morning, after forcing me out of bed).  He taught me to be spiritual, to recognize wild animal trails on our hikes, to learn the behavior of honey bees. She calls it a disservice to oneself. This world is not kind to the weak; from the animal kingdom, to natural disasters, the weak will always suffer the greatest.  My mother came to France without education and with my brother. My father fell in love with her, and they had me and my sister soon after. My father was a jeweler and during the late 80s and 90s in the French economy, with my father providing our only income, our family was in dire financial trouble. Our house was repossessed by the bank, and there were many days I went to bed hungry, hoping I would fall asleep fast to forget my hunger. My mother is the reason why we stayed strong.  She would not accept this as our fate, and during her 30s she took classes to earn an education while working multiple tedious jobs, including opening a parking gate of a flower shop, and while helping my father with his job. This woman who had no education and a fair amount of reason to be a victim never gave up. (She broke down at times at home, but she would immediately regroup and go on). She became an example to my family and others in our surrounding community. Even to this time, people ask her for advice about anything, and I myself continue to do so.  Through her I overcame the challenges of being an outcast in the ballet world and decided to continue to pursue my dance dream, regardless of all roadblocks.  I came to America alone without speaking the language, to live on a dime, to overcome the fear when I was homeless, to fight and earn money as an artist, to be who I am today.  Today I teach and support my students, protege/kids, and teach them grit. I thought regardless of what was going to happen I would be a part of a society that strived for the betterment of the world, and while as a child things were yet to my dreamt expectations, it would eventually happen by the time I would become an adult. With time I realized that much of the world wasn’t looking for betterment but for quick money. Our politicians would run the same scripted narrative on how they would change things: “they had a plan” they say, a plan for global warming, alternate energy, etc. But the same things would happen, nothing or too little. I learned about Elon in the early 2000s and things started to change quickly, risks were taken and results were obtained. Companies became a reality without scripted BS. Today I stand in front of the SpaceX starship, which is a true beginning for us and the symbol of deep space exploration for humans. This is no dream or science fiction, this is our future and the future of our children. Elon Musk and his vision and his team are a gift to this world. SpaceX, Tesla, Neuralink, Starlink, it is our reality now. Thank you Elon.

Diversity in thought and perspective is the catalyst for grander ideas and groundbreaking solutions. My life has been driven by a deep-seated curiosity and a passion for finding solutions.
