Fiann Smithwick Instagram - Not all fossils can be saved from the elements. This large ammonite was preserved compressed in the shale and was exposed at low tide. The action of the waves rolling over it and grinding sand onto the shell gradually eroded it over time. These flat ammonites are very hard to salvage due to their delicate preservation. I found this large ammonite on the Jurassic Coast recently just hanging out wedged between some rocks. 🏖🐚🗿🏞 Based on how roughed up the fossil was, it must have been out of the cliffs and rolling around on the beach for some time. Fiann Smithwick Instagram - I've not been to the beach for a little while as conditions haven't been ideal, so here's a little throwback to a fine ammonite I found on a stormy day a few years ago on the Jurassic Coast. ⛈🌊🌊🐚 It's a nice 3D example of a genus called Liparoceras. Usually, these ammonites are found inside hard rock concretions, finding an isolated example like this in the mud is pretty unusually. As you can see, a little wash in the sea cleaned much of the mud off. Fiann Smithwick Instagram - I found this beautiful 3D nautilus fossil on the Jurassic Coast a few days ago freshly washed out of the Jurassic clay. The sea had done all the hard work on this one, cleaning it up and leaving it sitting there for me to find! Fiann Smithwick Instagram - I found this large Stephanoceras ammonite recently on the Jurassic Coast. These are uncommon ammonites and I got very lucky with this one! You usually have to spot a small bit of the fossil in the rock, but this one was fully exposed waiting to be found. The tricky bit was carrying it home! Fiann Smithwick Instagram - Holding hands with an animal that died almost 200 million years ago. This is an ichthyosaur (marine reptile) paddle I found on the Jurassic Coast. Although we call them paddles locally, it's a misnomer as ichthyosaurs didn't use them to swim. Instead, they beat their tail side to side to propel themselves forwards while these front limbs kept the animal stable in the water and helped them steer. 🏖🐚🐬🦈🌊 When I found this fossil, the bones were all loose in the rock. So I had to piece them back together into their original arrangement. I didn't find it this year (I found in nearly a decade ago), but I did finally get round to getting it prepared to it's full potential. The work was done by @naturalselectionfossils and the results speak for themselves. Fiann Smithwick Instagram - Here's another one of my best fossils from the Jurassic Coast - a pefect juvenile ichthyosaur from the Blue Lias of Lyme Regis. 🌊🐬 This animal would have been pretty young when it sadly died 196 million years ago. Fiann Smithwick Instagram - Yesterday was the grand unveiling of the 200-year overdue statue to one of my personal heroes, the pioneering 19th Century fossil hunter Mary Anning. I'm sure many of you will be more than familiar with Mary's life and work, but for those who aren't, she is widely considered to be the greatest fossil hunter of all time. She found thousands of incredibly rare fossils at Lyme Regis that no one had found before and helped to start palaeontology as a science. Her specimens, including the first ichthyosaurs, plesiosaurs, and pterosaurs, were pivotal in us understanding about life before humans in the deep past and were important in the development of the theory of evolution. 🦈🐬🦖 Sadly, she lived in poverty for much of her life, and was not properly recognised for her work in her lifetime. She wasn't allowed into the Geological Society of London because she was a woman, despite knowing more about fossils than any man in there. The Jurassic Coast wouldn't be the place it is without her, yet it's taken this long for a statue to be made in her honour. 🐚🐚🐚 A massive congratulations to the team at @maryanningrocks for getting this statue put in its rightful place. And a special thanks to Evie for kick starting the whole thing. Your effort to get this done was incredible and will inspire generations who head out past Mary to go fossil hunting. Fiann Smithwick Instagram - A pan across one of my best ichthyosaur fossils from the Jurassic Coast. I found this beastie a few years ago in a near-complete state of preservation. 🏖 It's preserved in an unusual fashion for these fossils - on its belly. Usually they're lying on their side. Fiann Smithwick Instagram - Following on from my last post, this is the full ichthyosaur fossil I found many years ago on the Jurassic Coast. I found the skull in a small cliff fall in summer and could see where the rest of the fossil was in the cliffs. I had to wait as the bit of the cliff was too dangerous to attempt an extraction, which would have also required permission. Luckily, a few months later, that bit of the cliff fell, revealing the rest. 🗿🌊🗿 I was a bit disappointed to see that most of the body was missing, but it's still a cool and rare fossil! It's strange that the skull is so well preserved while the body is scattered, which might mean it nose dived into the muddy sediment on the Jurassic seafloor after it died. Fiann Smithwick Instagram - Here's an ichthyosaur tooth I found a few months ago on the Jurassic Coast. You could see the root sticking out of the rock, but I didn't know if the crown was there. I took the rock home and carefully removed some of the rock to reveal a perfect tooth. 🦷🐬🦷 These teeth made these Early Jurassic ichthyosaurs well suited to eating large prey. The range of wildlife you can find on the coast if you know where and how to look is amazing. It takes me back to being a kid growing up on the coast and finding everything in nature fascinating. 🦀🦀🌊🏖 This little one is a long-legged spider crab that uses seaweed it sticks to its shell and legs to camouflage itself in rockpools. Fiann Smithwick Instagram - This is the front limb of an ichthyosaur I found some years ago on the Jurassic Coast. 🏖🌊🐚 Ichthyosaurs were marine reptiles that were superbly adapted for life in the water. When alive, they would have superficially resembled dolphins, but their bones show how different they were. Their limbs evolved to have lots more bones in them, with ones like this having dozens and dozens. As it's almost exactly nine years since I found it (on Easter day), I thought I'd share one of my best fossils once again. This massive Temnodontosaurus skull was in a big concretion in a cliff fall on the JurassicCoast. Sadly, the body wasn't there and the jaws were badly damaged by the sea, but @naturalselectionfossils did an incredible job prepping it from the rock and reconstructing the missing bits of the jaws. Fiann Smithwick Instagram - I found this rock recently on the Jurassic Coast and split part of it to see what was inside. I was pretty pleased to see the edge of a 196-million-year-old ammonite! I brought it home before finishing the split to reveal this amazing Asteroceras obtusum ammonite preserved in brown crystalline calcite. 🐚⚙ These are my favourite ammonites to find - the detail and colour of the fossil contrasts so well with the dark grey limestone rocks they're preserved in. This one won't take too much more work to prep now that it's split so nicely. You can get all kinds of colours in these shells, with some having almost all the colours of the rainbow in. The colours change thanks to the layers of the shell that are stacked on top of one another and refract the light different. The thickness of these layers determine the colours, with thinner shells having blue and green hues and thicker layers having orange and red hues. Fiann Smithwick Instagram - This is one of my best fossils I've found on the Jurassic Coast - a near-perfect juvenile marine reptile called an ichthyosaur. 🌊🦕🌊 Usually, these fossils preserve the animals lying on their sides as they easily rolled over on the seafloor after they died, but this one preserves it lying on its belly with its limbs splayed out. The sea had already taken the front paddle and part of the ribcage, so Craig reconstructed these beautifully to show what they would have looked like before being lost to the elements. 🦈☠🌊💨🌊 This beautiful little fossil is about 70 cm long and has one of the best skulls of any of my ichthys, and the tiniest back paddles! The tail is also weirdly broken up and the other side of the skull is exposed having drifted slightly when it lay on the seafloor. I found the bones individually in very crumbly rock, so I removed them and was pretty happy to discover they fit back together. It's one of the best I've found and is part of a large near-complete animal I found a few years ago. 🦈🐬🦈 I've not yet removed the fine layer of clay from the bones because this paddle is very unusual - it has soft tissue (skin and muscle remnants) surrounding the bones. 🦴🍗🍖 These soft tissues rarely preserve in fossils and are very hard to prepare. I removed the shell with a grinder to reveal the internal buoyancy chambers that are naturally filled with clear calcite crystals. I then polished it to really bring out the shine. This nicely shows off the internal detail of an ammonite shell without having to slice it in half. There aren't many ammonites you can do this with though! I found both of these on the Jurassic Coast about five years apart. 🏖🏞🌊 Several species of ichthyosaur lived alongside one another in the Early Jurassic seas of what is now the UK. The largest, Temnodontosaurus, was the top predator at the time and would have happily eaten the smaller species. Fiann Smithwick Instagram - This is a beautifully detailed little hybodont shark's tooth from the Early Jurassic of Lyme Regis. I found this a few years ago when only a small part of it was showing from the rock. After a bit of very careful cleaning, it turned out to be perfect. 🦈🦈🦷 It's a small tooth that only measures about a centimetre across, so would have come from a small shark. The largest sharks we know about from the Early Jurassic seas where these fossils are found are about 5-6 feet long and several spectacular compete shark fossils have been found here over the years. I found the first half of this huge Asteroceras stellare ammonite about a month ago in a cliff fall, but there was no sign of the other half. Then, last week I found the other half in a huge concretion freshly washed out by the sea. 🌊🌊🐚🌊🌊 Each piece was huge and weighed well over 100 kg, so I had to whittle them down on the beach to be able to carry them home. Caption : Here’s another one of my best fossils from the Jurassic Coast – a pefect juvenile ichthyosaur from the Blue Lias of Lyme Regis. 🌊🐬 This animal would have been pretty young when it sadly died 196 million years ago. I took the rock home and carefully removed some of the rock to reveal a perfect tooth. 🦷🐬🦷 These teeth made these Early Jurassic ichthyosaurs well suited to eating large prey. I brought it home before finishing the split to reveal this amazing Asteroceras obtusum ammonite preserved in brown crystalline calcite. 🐚⚙ These are my favourite ammonites to find – the detail and colour of the fossil contrasts so well with the dark grey limestone rocks they’re preserved in.
