Jacqui Lewis Instagram - My calling to ministry is deeply rooted in the Civil Rights Movement. My work has been about social justice and reclaiming and reframing Christianity. By all accounts, #CowboyCarter is a body of music that reclaims and reframes music and American history.

Throughout the album Beyoncé gives the world a new, inclusive and expansive offering of music- lifting up our blackbirds and new black rising starts while truly honoring ALL of music history (Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson, Stevie Wonder, Linda Martell).

May we enjoy this music. And it cause our hearts to open more. Art matters. History matters. This album imagines a way forward into something bold and NEW while lifting up the past and future.

When Melba Pattillo Beals heard Beyoncé sing a line from the Beatles’ “Blackbird” on her new album last week, she was transported back to a morning in September 1957, when she and eight other Black students arrived at an all-White Arkansas school.

Beals, a member of the group known as the Little Rock Nine who integrated Central High School, had loved the 1968 Beatles hit from the first time she heard it — long before she learned in 2016 that her story had inspired it.

The 82-year-old San Francisco resident said hearing Beyoncé’s rendition brought new meaning to the lyrics. As Beals streamed the song on Beyoncé’s new album, “Cowboy Carter,” she felt empowered knowing that nearly 67 years ago, she helped desegregate schools.

“This song awakens so much,” Beals said.

Jacqui Lewis Instagram - Praying for all.

May the returned hostages find themselves enveloped in love as they begin the long journey of healing. May ALL of the hostages be released.

May the short ceasefire pave the way for a more permanent end to the inexcusable and inhumane violence on Palestinians.

May diplomacy and political engagement replace bombs and indiscriminate warfare.

May peace soon reign.

Jacqui Lewis Instagram - Loving the comments on this on tweet. Accepting and celebrating all people brings a richness to the world that white-supremacy cannot abide by because it demands that only “whiteness” is worthiness. In the end white supremacy robs us all of a vibrant and colorful world with endless possibilities.

Jacqui Lewis Instagram - Easter is upon us and there is MUCH to think about.

This Holy Week, Donald Trump made headlines selling $60 Bibles to fund his mountain of legal fees—Christian Nationalism selling off Christianity’s clothes while the faith they’re killing still hangs upon the cross.

The twice-impeached, white supremacy spouting, serial raping, grifter-in-chief is a fitting stand-in for the Roman soldiers in our Good Friday story. His entire life embodies the savagery of the American imperial project. In the same way that the soldiers’ cruelty exposes the violence beneath the Pax Romana’s glittery sheen, he is Christian Nationalism stripped of all the ways it tries to make itself respectable. Any pretense of following Christ is gone, leaving just the naked will to dominate.

Let’s be very clear: Christian Nationalism is actively crucifying the one they claim is risen. Every time they invoke Jesus’ name to persecute God’s people, they drive another nail into his body.

But we know how the story ends… 🙏🏾🙌🏾

Jacqui Lewis Instagram - Reflecting on the life of Jesus—a Palestinian Jew—slain by the empire, we’re reminded of countless individuals whose lives have been cut short by oppressive laws and the insidious grip of power and hate.

Trans rights face unprecedented assaults in our nation’s corridors of power. Policies and bills wielded by those in authority aim to obliterate our siblings’ narratives, stripping them of rights, healthcare, and bodily autonomy.

In mourning Jesus, we mourn not only him but for ALL who are holy, sacred, and deeply cherished.

While extensive records recount Jesus’ journey, the same comprehensive documentation doesn’t exist for these women. Out of 45 reports thus far unearthed (source: tdor.translivesmatter.info/reports), with an additional 7 acknowledged by the Human Rights Campaign, today we honor these 7 women.

7 women—sisters, mothers, daughters, lovers, friends, and pioneers—cherished by their kin and communities. Today, we lift you in remembrance. We breathe life into your names and stories. We affirm your significance, vowing never to forget.

Join us in a moment of silence. Speak their names and those before them. Share their faces. As long as the trans community is under attack, we will stand up and fight back. Check out our story to see how you can participate with us today.

Jacqui Lewis Instagram - America has a problem, indeed.

May we never stop speaking truth to power.

May we free ourselves of the lie so that we can build the land of freedom that we claim to be, but never have been for anyone (starting with our indigenous siblings). What affects one of us affects all of us.

And oh how beautiful we could all be together ❤️✊🏾

Jacqui Lewis Instagram - Double tap if you feel me. If you feel the collective pain of the world.❤️🙏🏾

The suffering of others should break all of our hearts- it should crack them open wide enough to love MORE, to “See no stranger” as my friend @valariekaur says.

We are ALL God’s chosen ones no matter what we believe or don’t believe. I will keep ringing the bell for love until my last breath.

Looking forward to my Insta Live with @valariekaur on Wednesday 4/ 24 at 7:00pm EDT. We’ll talk all things Revolutionary Love. Valarie’s book “See No Stranger” is a mission statement and rally cry for empathy for all.

And don’t forget there are still digital and in person tickets to Freedom Rising Conference starting THIS FRIDAY the 26th. Tix at www.freedomrisingconference.com. I so hope to see you there ❤️✊🏾
Jacqui Lewis Instagram - Today I turn 65 🤗❤️🥳

I am grateful for every twist and turn along the way to this birthday. I celebrate the little girl inside me- the one who worried about being too shiny, who sometimes felt the need to make herself small—the overachiever who wanted to do ALL of the things and be the best, and who always had a strong moral compass and an insane drive for justice.

At 65, I feel more”ME” than ever. I’m less afraid of messing up (because messing up is human), less afraid of taking up too much space (who does shrinking serve?), and MORE committed to creating a just world for everyone.

I know myself enough to laugh at myself when my flaws—like my stubbornness (who me? 🫢), and my difficulty resting—rear their heads.

Here’s to knowing the best is yet to come. I wouldn’t change a thing. Much love to my friends and family and to all of YOU for helping me grow into the best Jacqui yet. ❤️✊🏾

Jacqui Lewis Instagram - Holy Week 2024, y’all. Which parade are we in?

If you missed today’s @middlechurch worship featuring Jesus Christ Superstar, you can catch it online or watch our 3:00pm EDT digital service.

These are hard times, and as I said in worship, though there is a cup full of poison, there is also a fountain full of of love.

Let us be the love.

Jacqui Lewis Instagram - Shouting this from the mountaintops- GOD IS BIGGER THAN OUR BINARIES.

I posted this a few years ago, but I think it’s so important to deconstruct the idea that God fits into tiny, human sized boxes and labels…

How do you see God? Is God a “He” to you? A “She?” Is God Non-Binary? ⁣
⁣
My God is a curvy black woman with dreadlocks and dark, cocoa-brown skin. She laughs from her belly and is unashamed to cry. She can rock a whole world to sleep, singing in her contralto voice. Her sighs breathe life into humanity. Her heartbreaks cause eruptions of justice and love.⁣
⁣
Of course, because God is a mystery, we don’t know everything about Her. So, out of our imaginations and our yearnings, our hopes and our fears, we make stuff up. ⁣
⁣
At our best, we project goodness, power, kindness, and love onto God. At our worst, we create a God who is punitive, angry, judgmental, and harsh. We do this because we are those things, and we think they make us safe.⁣
⁣
What does your God look like? Comment below!⁣
⁣
⁣
Check out the link in my bio for an article I wrote about femininity and how we “imagine” God.⁣

Jacqui Lewis Instagram - Armor down. No red lip, no robe, no preacher’s stole. No fierce woman outfit required. Bare skin. Free. Playful. Splashing in the water with my grandbabies in pure chaotic delight. Of all the roles I have, being their Nana (and married to their Pop Pop) are the best of all.

It’s John’s birthday today and I have a special gift for him. But these babies? They’re his gift to me, one that keeps on giving. Happy Birthday, Pop Pop. I love you SO much.❤️💋
Jacqui Lewis Instagram - It’s our anniversary! Celebrating 19 years of love and partnership with my wonderful husband, John Janka. We’re taking some time in beautiful Montreal to honor our journey together.

Our interracial marriage, something that would have been impossible before the landmark Loving case in 1967, has been a journey of growth, support, and endless loving debates that keep us sharp. John is my best friend, my thought partner, and my greatest supporter.

Thanking God for the day we met. Here’s to many more years of love and adventure and a relationship that heals and helps us grow into our biggest most generous selves both inside our relationship and in the world.

Jacqui Lewis Instagram - When I am feeling the need for healing and inspiration these days one of my first stops is @blackliturgies. @colearthurriley’s page and her recent book are simply a balm to my soul. Here are some of my favorite recent posts of hers to send you into the weekend.

Take care of yourselves, loves. This world asks a LOT of us and we won’t be able to sustain the fight for justice if our minds, bodies, and spirits are broken. We need #SoulFood 🙏🏾❤️

Jacqui Lewis Instagram - John asked me to marry him on Valentine’s Day in 2005.

We had an intimate, sweet wedding @middlechurch. In my book, Fierce Love, I write about how full of love our wedding was: art-filled and full of a “rainbow tribe” of friends. As true as our love was, and as sure as I was that John was and always would be “my person,” my father chose to not come to our wedding because he disapproved of my marrying a white man, and a white man who was older than me at that.

Time doesn’t heal all wounds, truth does.

And rather than building resentment or pushing things under the rug, John bravely decided that we should travel to Chicago to see my father before our honeymoon- to understand whatever it was that made him feel like he could not accept us as a couple. To be honest. To tell the truth. Daddy & John talked. They shared life stories. They saw each other as humans. They eventually became friends.

I believe that all love is beautiful. Real love heals. Whether you are in a same-race relationship or an interracial relationship, there are challenges and gifts. Some of the challenges that John and I face are external (yup, in 2024 some people STILL don’t want to celebrate an interracial couple). And some are internal (We love one another but we are people with our “stuff.”)

John is my forever Valentine because he and I live our TRUTH together. Our love asks us to love bigger, deeper, more truthfully. Of all the choices I have made in life, John is my very best choice of all.

Jacqui Lewis Instagram - 57 years ago my marriage would have been illegal. On this Loving Day, we celebrate the power of love that knows no bounds. John and my interracial marriage stands on the shoulders of the Loving decision, a landmark ruling by the Supreme Court on June 12, 1967, that affirmed our right to love freely and fully thanks to Mildred and Richard Loving’s bravery and conviction.

Today, as rights that were long fought for are being threatened and stripped away across the country, we have to ask ourselves- what kind of world do we want? What world are we creating? Is it a world in which only white, cis people (and mainly men) are valued? Where whiteness and “blending in” are paramount? I reject that world. I reject it because there is so much beauty in the diversity with which God created us.

I think it is SO fitting that #LovingDay occurs during Pride Month because, indeed, Love is Love is Love is Love is LOVE—unconditional, unapologetic, and unstoppable.

Here’s to the beauty of our diverse love stories and the unbreakable bond that unites us all. ❤️

Jacqui Lewis Instagram - Love is love is not enough this Pride.

We have reached a historic number of anti-LGBTQIA bills, the highest in US history, and it’s ONLY June.

Our queer & trans siblings are suffering at the hands of people in power. Gender-affirming care is being banned across the US, abortions are being banned, trans children are being outed by their teachers and school counselors, our trans siblings are dying at an alarming rate, saying love is love is not enough.

FIERCE LOVE, as our senior minister @revjacquilewis has told us, is through ACTION. It’s what we do and what we say. Check the last slide for how you can help your trans siblings, check in on them, write in to your local legislator and be a voice for them, vote for them.

They need us. ALL OF US. 🏳️‍⚧️🌈❤️

To our LGBTQIA siblings, here at Middle Church, we see you, we love you, and we will continue to fight for you, always.

Jacqui Lewis Instagram - It might have been 1991 when I first met Dr. West. An AAR meeting likely. And for all these years, Brother West greets me with that big-brother I see you trying hard lil sis energy. Kindness. Affirmation. Even some joy. Outside of presidential politics, in every context-in the streets, in the church, in the academy—this brother gives me Ubuntu. He sees me, recognizes me. How potent is that. Can we all give that power to each other? See each other’s super powers and prickly bits. Celebrate. Encourage.

So here we are, outside after some slamming worship at Yale, glowing from Bishop Barber’s sermon. Bad lighting. Grainy pic. Not a great selfie angle. BUT that joyful recognition from one tired love warrior to another.

If you want to get in the middle of it with me- if you want to find your place, your voice in the movement for peace and justice for all around the globe, join me at the Freedom Rising Conference April 26-28 in NYC. Jacqui Lewis Instagram - Mommy died 7 years ago today. She was 80 years old. Look at this face that comforted me when I cried. These soft lips that kissed me goodnight.

I learned to tilt my head back and laugh hard from Mommy, to pray everyday from this beautiful sweet woman that I miss everyday. If you lost someone you love, say their name in the comments. Emma Lee Lewis is hers. Mommy, your love is eternal; you are everlasting life to me.

Last year at our Freedom Rising Conference a love warrior brought this restored photo to me as a gift. Thank you friend. Hope you’re coming this weekend. Can’t wait to be in a community of love TOMORROW.

Jacqui Lewis - 13.2K Likes - My calling to ministry is deeply rooted in the Civil Rights Movement.

R/p @poststyle:

Jacqui Lewis - 13.2K Likes - My calling to ministry is deeply rooted in the Civil Rights Movement.

Jacqui Lewis - 1.7K Likes - Easter is upon us and there is MUCH to think about.

Join us Middle Church Tomorrow, Easter Sunday:

Caption : Reflecting on the life of Jesus—a Palestinian Jew—slain by the empire, we’re reminded of countless individuals whose lives have been cut short by oppressive laws and the insidious grip of power and hate. May we never stop speaking truth to power.

May we free ourselves of the lie so that we can build the land of freedom that we claim to be, but never have been for anyone (starting with our indigenous siblings). What affects one of us affects all of us.

And oh how beautiful we could all be together ❤️✊🏾

Jacqui Lewis - 1K Likes - Today I turn 65 🤗❤️🥳

If you missed today’s @middlechurch worship featuring Jesus Christ Superstar, you can catch it online or watch our 3:00pm EDT digital service.

These are hard times, and as I said in worship, though there is a cup full of poison, there is also a fountain full of of love.

Let us be the love.

Asé.

Jacqui Lewis - 1K Likes - Shouting this from the mountaintops- GOD IS BIGGER THAN OUR BINARIES.

Check out the link in my bio for an article I wrote about femininity and how we “imagine” God.⁣

❤️🤗❤️ #LoveWins #Anniversary #MontrealMagic #LoveIsLove #InterracialMarriage #WeddingAnniversary #LovePeriod #GodIsLove #BlendedFamily #EverlastingLove #NatalieCole

Take care of yourselves, loves. This world asks a LOT of us and we won’t be able to sustain the fight for justice if our minds, bodies, and spirits are broken. We need #SoulFood 🙏🏾❤️

Love this pic of Cole, Simran Jeet, Nelba Màrquez-Greene and I at Freedom Rising last month 🤗❤️✊🏾

Jacqui Lewis - 804 Likes - John asked me to marry him on Valentine’s Day in 2005.

Jacqui Lewis - 783 Likes - 57 years ago my marriage would have been illegal.

❤️ #LovingDay #LoveIsLove #UnbreakableBond #InterracialMarriage #GodIsLove #FaithfullyLGBT #FreeToLove #TodayInHistory @middlechurch @aclu_nationwide @uscraceequity #aclu

Jacqui Lewis - 616 Likes - Love is love is not enough this Pride.

Jacqui Lewis - 375 Likes - It might have been 1991 when I first met Dr.

In person and digital tickets are still available at www.freedomrisingconference.com and more at link in bio.

Jacqui Lewis - 249 Likes - Mommy died 7 years ago today.
