Janaki Sabesh Instagram - When my daughter @dhwanisabesh and I wrote Paati’s Rasam, we had no idea that we will be soaking in the warmth and love of children & adults from all over the country for our book.

Last week, was the announcement of the winner of the @jarulbookawards and we were evidently amidst a sea of joyful children. The ‘Children’s Choice Award’ was to be declared. About 10,000 children had voted for their favourite among the top three nominations - "Paati’s Rasam", "Sometimes Mama Sometimes Papa" and "Giggi and Daddy". We had these two equally brilliant books contesting for the position, alongside Paati’s Rasam.

And when they finally announced Paati's Rasam as the winner, the young audience sprang up from their seats letting out squeals of delight. Yes! Paati’s Rasam won the 2023 National Jarul Book Award.

After the felicitation, I had a great time talking to children as they shared their dreams of becoming an author, spoke of how much they loved the book, and that they would love it if we could visit their school. The warmth I was receiving in these conversations was proof enough that Paati’s Rasam had won the hearts of children. In fact, there was a child who came to me during this event, wanted to hug me, and shared how she had associated the story of Paati’s Rasam to the loss of her pet.

So grateful for this recognition from the National Jarul Book Awards, held at the American School of Bombay. A heartfelt thank you to the children who voted for ‘Paati’s Rasam’ and the parents, teachers, and all adults who have welcomed this book into your homes.

A big thank you to @shobhavish of @karaditales, our publisher, who believed in the story! Thank you to Vaijayanthi @vay.jay who did the storyboard, & Pallavi Jain @this.beleaf our illustrator, who wove magic into the book! It has been such a gratifying journey so far with this book, and we are sure it will continue to touch more hearts globally as well.

What felt more special for me is that I wore my Amma’s koorapudavai, which felt like a warm hug for celebrating our success. Swipe to see videos and pictures of us soaking in the warmth of children’s love and cheers for us.

Janaki Sabesh Instagram - My heart is full today. Holding this precious award in my hand that is more of an affirmation for having chosen the right direction as a storyteller. I feel extremely happy to have received the 'Siraar Kadhai Sirpi' award (roughly translating to sculptor of stories for children) for storytelling, from the prestigious Paavai Group of Institutions, @paavaiedu as a part of Paavai Awards 2022.

Why is this moment very special?
Few years ago when I decided to shift all the gears in my career into storytelling, it was difficult for everyone to be onboard. Could storytelling really be a standalone profession? Despite this big question, they strongly believed in me and my decisions.

Being a storyteller is an opportunity to sow the seeds of imagination in hearts and minds. With every story shared with children and adults across age groups, I sense how the values in the stories rub off on me as a person too.

In this exciting journey, as I continue to hone my skills, trust my diverse work experiences, and be committed to the process that unfolds, I owe a lot to the self-made woman in the picture (swipe right) my Athai who is my cheerleader at all times. In fact when I wanted her to pose with the award for a photo, the joy and pride she expressed for me was matchless.

A big thank you once again to @paavaiedu Paavai Group of Institutions, Founder and Chairman, Shri Natarajan Varadappan sir, Smt. Mangai Natarajan ma'am (correspondent), and @avantinatarajan (Director, Student Affairs) for felicitating me with this award and recognizing storytelling as a powerful transformative art form. Elated to have received the award from Padma Shri Dr. Sirpi Balasubramaniam sir, a renowned Tamil writer, and poet, and also shared the awards stage with luminaries from various fields.

An award is always a gesture of appreciation that fuels us to do more. So here's a promise to myself, to touch more and more hearts through stories.

Swipe further to see more moments from the event and the pride in Athai’s face as she celebrates the special moment with me.

Janaki Sabesh Instagram - “Every story starts with a simple idea”

There is usually a moment when an idea takes root and begins to grow. It’s just like how the concept behind my new book “Mugi and the Rainbow” was rooted years ago. The funny part is that I didn’t even know it would be a part of my adventure back then. It was just a mention of a prompt by a friend about a squirrel chasing a rainbow which stayed with me for years. And now I know why! When @dcbooks approached me to write a picture book for them, I decided to revisit that idea. It just felt perfect. Sometimes, everything comes together seamlessly at the right time!

Once I had the idea, I brainstormed with my young friend and fellow stage actor, @shreyaaasuresh. We had much fun and lively discussions in developing the story. Thank you Shreyaa for your inputs! After the manuscript was ready, it was time for illustrations. Navleen Kohli @odes_to_things did a great job and it was very interesting to communicate directly and share my vision as I wanted each character to have a unique and appealing personality. Her illustrations turned out exactly as I had hoped, adding a beautiful dimension to the story.

The highlight was during the book launch, last week, at DC Book Fest in Forum Kochi Mall, where I narrated the story of “Mugi and the Rainbow.” It was launched by the talented Malayalam playback singer @iamindulekha!
The most touching part was when she shared a photo of her little boy enjoying the book with me, so much so that he even went to bed with it! I am glad that it was she who launched the book! It felt like it was all worth it, and there is MAGIC in storytelling.

I was pleasantly surprised when they approached my biggest cheerleader and supporter, @rekha_raghav sister, to receive the first copy. We were both overjoyed and sharing that lovely moment with her was so beautiful❤️

This is a light-hearted book about friendship and trust. It’s about characters with different personalities coming together for a common goal. Maybe the real treasure is the friends we make along the way, which is also the essence of the book!

Janaki Sabesh Instagram - In life, we often avoid certain things by labelling them as irrelevant. I usually avoid wearing the portable microphone to address a small crowd. It came from believing that I was audible enough while narrating stories and that the voice amplifier was just an appendage while addressing a small group of children. But something different happened yesterday as my friends in @tulikabooks confirmed it was houseful and unfortunately could not get hold of a mic.

Lucky for us, I remembered I had a portable mic lying in my cupboard for years. Though I wasn’t sure if it worked, to my pleasant surprise, it worked well. Yes, I finally wore the microphone headset, and let me tell you how I felt. It was liberating. It also helped my wonderful audience to hear me loud and clear. I found joy in this simple thing, and I believe this is what life is about. It is vital to find happiness in the small things.

As I wore the mic after a long time, it dawned on me that we often put a lot of things on hold in life. Maybe it is about time we do the things we haven’t done in years and welcome change. Let us step into the new year with this lesson in mind.

I am grateful for yet another year of opportunities to share stories with not just children but also with students, adults, corporate sectors, and NGOs. It has been overwhelming to see that my stories have made an impact on people. Nothing compares to the joy of seeing the spark in the eyes of my audience while listening to the stories. Here is hoping I continue this journey of making people smile. Thank you for being a part of this ride with me.

As it is time to say goodbye to 2023 let us be grateful for all the good things and keep going. The new year could be the one you have been waiting for your whole life!!

May the coming year bring you joy and success, dear Instagram family! I hope it’s filled with new opportunities and cherished moments.
Happy New Year! Hello 2024 😊

Much loved storyteller Janaki Aunty brings the story of our favourite gentle giant Gajapati Kulapati from the most recent book Little Gajapati Kulapati Kweee!

For ages 3 to 7
on Friday, 16 February at 5 pm (on ZOOM)

Registration details in BIO or DM for details
Janaki Sabesh Instagram - What can bring 6 strangers together in 90 minutes? A magic unfolded around this at the 'Flashback' event I facilitated at @idam_thespace Kodambakkam on Saturday.
It was a ride into our past with photographs, objects and special memories from our lives. We sat in a circle, slowly warming up to introductions about ourselves. Then each of us went back in our own time machines to fetch back memories that evoked beautiful emotions in us.
Nithya, started off with an exploration of 'Can a metro train journey be viewed from the lens of a life presented with new opportunities?'. All of us had a train story for sure. So we shared stories of fears, broken hearts, food memories and inspirations connected to train journeys.

It was such a heartwarming moment when Nithya shared a newspaper report on a similar session that I had facilitated 5 years back!

Selvi, took us to her days in the 1960s when commute to school was in horse carts through dark and dense hilly routes. She also recalled a heartwarming story of her reunion with her school best friend after many years, something that we think would happen only in movies.

As everyone listened in awe, the conversations seamlessly moved to objects that we held dear. From a miniature typewriter, to books and watches passed on through generations, to cherished gifts from an ex-girlfriend, each of us were now talking about our most personal stories without the fear of being judged. And that's what an intimate group session like this can do.

It was turning into a deep and intense, yet safe space for sharing, as each participant took cue from the previous story and expressed theirs. A warm connect blossomed through the flashback ride we took together.

I find it apt to say that every kind of story had its 'idam' (place) there!

As we ended with some soothing lemon tea and butter biscuits, my heart was full and thankful for yet another evening where stories brought a group of strangers together♥️

Janaki Sabesh - 586 Likes - When my daughter @dhwanisabesh and I wrote Paati’s Rasam, we had no idea that we will be soaking in the warmth and love of children & adults from all over the country for our book.

Caption : When my daughter @dhwanisabesh and I wrote Paati’s Rasam, we had no idea that we will be soaking in the warmth and love of children & adults from all over the country for our book. Last week, was the announcement of the winner of the @jarulbookawards and we were evidently amidst a sea of joyful children. The ‘Children’s Choice Award’ was to be declared. About 10,000 children had voted for their favourite among the top three nominations – “Paati’s Rasam”, “Sometimes Mama Sometimes Papa” and “Giggi and Daddy”. We had these two equally brilliant books contesting for the position, alongside Paati’s Rasam.  And when they finally announced Paati’s Rasam as the winner, the young audience sprang up from their seats letting out squeals of delight. Janaki Sabesh (@maajanaki ) had the little ones dancing and singing to the timeless melodies of Karadi Tales, while Muralikrishnan (@drumsmurali )enchanted them with his captivating tunes and charming instruments.

A new generation discovered the timeless magic of old Karadi rhymes, with some kids already familiar and others eagerly picking them up along the way!

Janaki Sabesh - 367 Likes - My heart is full today.

Caption : My heart is full today. Holding this precious award in my hand that is more of an affirmation for having chosen the right direction as a storyteller. I feel extremely happy to have received the ‘Siraar Kadhai Sirpi’ award (roughly translating to sculptor of stories for children) for storytelling, from the prestigious Paavai Group of Institutions, @paavaiedu as a part of Paavai Awards 2022.

Janaki Sabesh - 206 Likes - In life, we often avoid certain things by labelling them as irrelevant.

Janaki Sabesh - 173 Likes - What can bring 6 strangers together in 90 minutes?

It was a ride into our past with photographs, objects and special memories from our lives. We sat in a circle, slowly warming up to introductions about ourselves. Then each of us went back in our own time machines to fetch back memories that evoked beautiful emotions in us. Nithya, started off with an exploration of ‘Can a metro train journey be viewed from the lens of a life presented with new opportunities?’. And that’s what an intimate group session like this can do. It was turning into a deep and intense, yet safe space for sharing, as each participant took cue from the previous story and expressed theirs. A warm connect blossomed through the flashback ride we took together. I find it apt to say that every kind of story had its ‘idam’ (place) there! As we ended with some soothing lemon tea and butter biscuits, my heart was full and thankful for yet another evening where stories brought a group of strangers together♥️ #flashback #storytelling #magic #momentswithmaajanaki

Karadi Rhymes echo the joys of a childhood that is nurtured by the idiosyncratic sensibilities that Indian children grow up amidst. Little relatable are Jack and Jill and plum pies when it is monsoon showers and ripe mangoes that guide the experience of an Indian childhood. Come sing with us as we revel in the tunes that celebrate autos, spices, sarees, and much more!
