John Prine Instagram - “Gonna be a long Monday…”
John Prine Instagram - John found the artwork for In Spite of Ourselves in a bookstore prior to knowing who the iconic photographer @elliotterwitt was, only to find out, John was mutually friends with the renowned photographer’s daughter.

Years later, John used another photograph from the beloved photographer for the For Better or Worse artwork.

“After I recorded the tracks, I went to the library and went to the photography section and started lookin' for pictures of couples, and I just grabbed a whole stack of 'em. I don't know one photographer from the other, by the way, but I love black and white photography and I saw an Elliot Erwitt book. And most of the things in the book, I noticed that it was always two people, so everything he was doin' was in couples. There was the back of two old cars leanin' in toward each other, that was originally gonna be the cover but then I found that one lookin' like they were applyin' for a marriage license and the old couple behind 'em.”

John Prine Instagram - John Prine singing songs circa 1966 during his military days in Germany.

“Sitting on my bunk in the barracks, in Germany, playing my Gibson Hummingbird. My Dad shipped it over to me. That’s my buddy Arnie, from the song ‘Pretty Good,’ where I sing ‘…I got a friend in Fremont…’ I’d just sing for the guys. They always wanted to hear me play. They all liked country music except for Arnie, he thought it was corny. I was writing songs in the Army, but I was just singing the songs I’d learned to sing for my Dad.”

John Prine Instagram - On this day 2005, John Prine was the 1st Singer/Songwriter To Read/Play at Library of Congress, Washington DC - John Prine Joins Poet Laureate Ted Kooser - "I've been asked to do a lot of things," says Prine with a big smile, "but this is definitely a first. And I don't even know how to quite respond to it. For a guy who carried mail, was in the service, did so-so in school, this is kind of beyond the stuff I usually think about. It's the kind of honor that's beyond. So, you can bet I'm looking forward to it - taking all these people in my songs to the Library of Congress and letting 'em look around a little bit. It should be great, and an honor, and everything else."

Caption : Did you know John was a part of his high school gymnastics squad? “Anything my brothers did, I thought, ’That’s my brother, I can do that too…’ Doug was a gymnast so I had to become one. When I saw Dave playing the guitar, I learned it. I had no natural ability at either thing, but if I could picture myself doing it, I could do it, if I put enough work into it. That’s why I said if my Dad liked ballet, I would have been Rudolph Nureyev. Shew, am I glad he didn’t like ballet!”

John Prine - 5.6K Likes - On this day in 2018, John released "The Tree of Forgiveness," his first album of original songs in 15 years.

"Prine’s kept at it steadily, despite a muse evidently grown less insistent, for nearly 50 years, and Tree of Forgiveness is his first set of originals in over a decade. It’s produced by Dave Cobb, and it’s very good, frequently brilliant, with all the qualities that define Prine’s music." -Rolling Stone

John Prine - 5.4K Likes - John Prine singing songs circa 1966 during his military days in Germany.

While in Germany, he asked his dad to mail his guitar. Once it arrived, he spent his evenings in the barracks playing and singing all the songs he knew. John never imagined he could make a living as a singer and songwriter.
