Lyle Lovett Instagram - Legendary musician and actor Lyle Lovett wears his own personal Pure Open Road in Alabaster. Shot on location at the iconic @gruenehall in Gruene, Texas, where Lovett played some of his earliest gigs as a musician.

Over a career that spans more than four decades, @lyle_lovett solidified his status as one of country music’s most iconic and iconoclastic voices, crafting songs that defy categorization, borrowing from jazz, gospel, Texas swing, and the blues to create a hybrid sound that’s all his own. A born-and-bred Texan who grew up outside Houston in the town of Klein, Lovett combines a veneration for tradition with a healthy sense of irreverence, as witnessed by his playful and often mischievous lyrics. It all comes from an authentic place, he says: “I write about things that feel real to me, things that really happened, things I really see. I don’t have to write songs. I just have to write them down.”

Those songs have taken Lovett from the Grammys to Hollywood, including memorable turns in four Robert Altman films. While he’s been known to wear a Prada suit with his Stetson and custom-made cowboy boots, he’s also a longtime rancher and rider (with the scars to prove it) and remains a true Texas gentleman to his core, with an ever-expanding personal collection of Stetson Open Roads. His first was inherited from his grandfather in 1979. His most recent? The Limited Edition 20X in Butterscotch that he picked up just last fall. “My grandfather always wore an Open Road to church,” Lovett says. “So to me, the Open Road was always the dress version of a cowboy hat. It has a cattleman’s crease in the crown and a conservative brim, so you’re not showing off.”

Lyle Lovett Instagram - Happy Easter! Join me this morning at 8:15 at @trinitykleinlutheranchurch, in person, or online at TrinityKlein.org. I’ll be singing with our choir and orchestra “Christ Arose,” written by Robert Lowry in 1874. Dr. Bill Brusick, Trinity Klein’s Minister of Music, selected the hymn for this year’s Easter Service. I’m honored whenever my home church asks me to sing. The Senior Choir’s Dave Senechal took this photo with his drone.
Lyle Lovett Instagram - Gene Elders played in the Large Band for ten years, until 2009. All of us in the band and crew were deeply saddened by his passing last week. Gene’s main job was playing in @georgestrait’s Ace in the Hole Band. He joined George in 1984 and played with George all these years. But because George’s concert schedule and mine didn’t overlap from 1999 to 2009, Gene was able to play with us in the Large Band too. Gene was always stellar onstage, and he was as kind offstage as he was talented. He and I rode the same bus. You really get to know people when you ride a bus with them. Gene Elders was thoughtful, kind, and good, through and through. His dry sense of humor always made us laugh. He was a joy to be with. His mom would come to our shows when we played near her in Colorado, and his brother, motorcycle stunt rider, “Deathwish” Dan Elders, would come to our shows in the Midwest. Gene was an artist all around. In addition to his fiddle, he was an expert with his camera. He had an early Canon digital, pocket-sized ELPH camera, and he took wonderful pictures every day we were on tour—of places and people and of us in the band. He inspired me to get my camera out and start shooting again. He had an amazing eye for light, composition, and for humanity. I loved seeing the world as he saw it. @micartwil took these pictures of Gene with @kraussviktor, @keithsewellmusic, @russellkunkel, and me. April gave me that belt buckle in 2002, so Michael must have taken them around then. I cherish my memories of Gene, and I pray for his family’s comfort. I loved him, and I miss him already.

Lyle Lovett Instagram - The Reverend Birdseye Maple, Maple Byrne, @emmylou_harris_ ‘s extraordinary longtime guitar tech and the Large Band’s first tour manager, was nice enough to come to our sets on @journeythroughsong aboard the @norwegiancruiseline #nclpearl. I couldn’t help but snap a shot of him. Maple and I have been friends since the early 80s when we met through my opening shows for Emmy. His first tour as my tour manager was in March of 1988, the first time I travelled with a horn section, the first time I called the band the Large Band. Thanks for your years of friendship, Maple. Thanks for being there for us on Cayamo this year.

Lyle Lovett Instagram - @raviniafestival, Highland Park, IL, 6/30/24: Thank y’all for being a great audience and for tuning into @93xrt. @martylennartzxrt was nice enough to introduce the Large Band and me that night. Marty’s and XRT’s support means the world. Thanks to @clintblack for doing the show with us. Being able to often see friends who live in different parts of the country is one of the great bonuses of touring. I met novelist and journalist Laurence Gonzales in 1996 when he interviewed me for @mensjournal. We became friends initially because of our mutual love of motorcycling. We went riding together with my parents and @chrishainestours in Baja; Laurence spent time with us in Klein. I watched his daughters grow into beautiful adults with families of their own. Here he is Sunday on the steps of my @senatorscoaches bus with his wife, Debbie, and son, Jonas. Deb brought her homemade enchiladas and salsa and El Milagro tortilla chips; Jonas brought the pure joy and enthusiasm only a 21-year-young man can. Laurence filled me in on his latest book. I enjoyed catching up with them at Ravinia and snapping a few shots. Real friends are a rare treasure.

Lyle Lovett Instagram - @uptowntheaterkc, Kansas City, MO, 6/28/24: The Uptown has been one of my favorite venues since James Gilmer, John Hagen, and I first played there in 1987, opening a show for @asleepatthewheel1970. Thank y’all for being an incredible audience last Friday night. We can’t wait to see you again.
Lyle Lovett Instagram - @thegrand1894operahouse, Galveston, Texas, 1/22/24: Thanks to Maureen Patton and The Grand for inviting the Large Band and me back for two nights this week. We always have a great time working with Maureen, and she always has a great audience for us. Thank you all for being there.
Lyle Lovett Instagram - Victoria Fine Arts Center, Victoria, Texas, 1/20/24: Thanks to the @victoriasymphony and Maestro @darryl.one for inviting the Large Band and me to be a part of Victoria Symphony’s 50th Anniversary. I appreciate the orchestra’s being so good natured and going along with all my jokes. Maestro One was an inspiration to us all. Thank you for being a wonderful audience, for supporting the Victoria Symphony and us the way you do.
Lyle Lovett Instagram - Lucas Oil Live at @winstar_world, Thackerville, OK, 1/19/24: Thanks to all the folks at WinStar for hosting the Large Band and me last night. You all were a wonderful audience, WinStar’s Lucas Oil Live is a state-of-the-art theater, a pleasure to play. Thanks for getting our winter Large-Band run off to a great start.
Lyle Lovett Instagram - @foxtheatrerwc, Redwood City, CA, 3/13/24: It felt great to be back at the Fox. One of my favorite memories is playing there three consecutive nights in 2008 with Guy Clark, Joe Ely, and John Hiatt. Nathaniel Kunkel recorded those shows and my late friend Vasco Lucas Nunes filmed them. The recordings and video have never been released. I hope someday to make that happen. Thank you for coming to see the Acoustic Group and me last Wednesday. We enjoyed playing for you all.
Lyle Lovett Instagram - @norwegiancruiseline Pearl, Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic, 3/3/24: It’s the @journeythroughsong community that makes Cayamo so special to play. @sxmliveloud makes its passengers feel so at home and so welcome, folks keep coming back year after year. Four or so rows back on the left side of the picture, the man in the green ball cap, is my friend John O’Neill, from Dublin, Ireland. I met John on the first Cayamo. He and his wife, Noeleen, come every year. Getting to know and spend time with the people who support our music—on Cayamo and around the world—is a privilege for all of us who play.

Lyle Lovett - 4.9K Likes - Legendary musician and actor Lyle Lovett wears his own personal Pure Open Road in Alabaster.

I just have to write them down.” Those songs have taken Lovett from the Grammys to Hollywood, including memorable turns in four Robert Altman films. It has a cattleman’s crease in the crown and a conservative brim, so you’re not showing off.” #OpenRoadCharacterDriven #ItsAStetson 📷: @stevenvisneauphotography

Lyle Lovett - 4.8K Likes - Hang on folks while I take a moment to “gush” ...If you are a true music lover and appreciate high level musicianship, you must go see @lyle_lovett and his Large Band. His all star 14 piece unit will take you on an emotional, soulful and funky sonic journey guided along by Lyle’s unmistakably emotional vocal style and his equally original and clever songwriting. With a backup vocal group that will tear your heart out, punchy horn section, and exciting solos that will get you up off your feet all glued together by the solid heartbeat of the rhythm section... the legendary team of Leeland Sklar on bass and Russ Kunkel on drums. Lyle Lovett - 2.1K Likes - Gene Elders played in the Large Band for ten years, until 2009.

Lyle Lovett - 1.2K Likes - @raviniafestival, Highland Park, IL, 6/30/24: Thank y’all for being a great audience and for tuning into @93xrt.

It’s a wonderful-sounding room. Thank y’all for being a great audience for the Acoustic Group and me.

Lyle Lovett - 742 Likes - @foxtheatrerwc, Redwood City, CA, 3/13/24: It felt great to be back at the Fox.
